why is everyone predicting SL doomsday, it's been busier than ever on avarage. i mean tonight there is just short of 60,000 online

i predict the oposite, it all looks pretty good, Havok4 is finally getting rolled out, Windlight is more stable and theres more 2 come.

I think SL will get better, but much less money orientated and more fun

People like to be pessimistic, because if they are pessimistic, they are always pleasantly surprised when things go right ;)

I have no idea why people keep predicting the demise of SL. Unless it's because of some of the stupidest decisions in SL were made by the management of Linden Labs, that I can understand.

However, Linden Labs seems to be figuring that out, so I'm of the wait and see mentality.

I did see a lot of very busy camping bots last time I was on...

But I agree, SL is not doomed. Just the rest of the planet.

When people log on endless alts to camp or increase traffic numbers and do nothing else, pointing at the number of people online is not very meaningful. I don't give much credence to the gloom and doom choir but I also don't give much credence to the Second Life is going to grow into something huge crowd either.

SL's future looks bright but I suppose there are pitfalls that could cause its demise.

Here are some I can think of:

Competition from other virtual worlds in the future (none I've seen come close at present).

Coming recession in RL hits the L$ economy too.

A fire or software meltdown at one of the major server centres.

Legislation (especially in USA) that limits the use or scope of virtual worlds.

Hopefully none of these things will happen and if SL does ever finish let's hope it's
only because it gets re-named!!!

You left out the potential for an alien invasion and Hilary Clinton.

You can't believe everything you see as numbers can be added and subtracted. Besides, 60k isn't all that much for a game that's worldwide. It dwarfs by comparison to other online games.

Hilary would fall under the legislation bit. Someone I won't be voting for, because Cthulhu would be a better choice ;)

Would Cthulhu be considered an alien invasion or an act of god?

hmmm good question, but just in case, can we round up all the negative peoples and toss them to him/her?

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Yay Chaos, and I never thought I'd hear myself say that! I bitch about SL & LL all the time, but you couldn't prise me out of it with a big stick ( or even a long pointy tentacle ). Residents continue to shock and awe me for both bad reasons and good. I find that excuse enough to stay for the long run. SL, or something like it, will be around for a hell of a long time yet.

Of course, I doubt the last sentence of Chaos' post...

Yay! Negative people = indigestion for god/aliens!

Oh, I complain about LL. A lot. I complain about the state of SL. A lot. Doesn't stop me from logging in every chance I get. You see, this is a highly addictive drug and well, it's a cheap drug at that ;)

I don't think SL is doomed. Just in yet another period of reinventing itself.

This might or might not doom some businesses within SL but that in itself is not necessarily a horrible thing. The savvy business owner is perfectly capable of reinventing thier business to suit the current situation.

It's true. While 60k is a lot of people, for an online game, especially for one with all the hype and all the talk as this one it's nothing. So it's not as good as you may think.

It took a several years to hit 1 million and just a few quick months to hit 2 million plus. Why do you think they open the flood gates to free membership without any form of ID? So they could say they surpassed the 2 million mark as they did. They didn't fool anyone.

SL can get better, but SL will only get more money orientated. The carefree, pre-1.1 days of $L having no RL cash value are long over.

What we are going to see is a massive market correction. We are already seeing it, as LindeX activity is flat despite the growth of accounts. People are not spending what they used to in the game, not per capita. Part of it is something residents can control (not buying from BIAB/thieves, and shopkeepers optimizing their stuff for maximum sales - MODIFY items) and the other part LL has to rectify (stability, reliability of asset servers).

The cream will rise to the top amid the competition. Unfortunately, theft will rise too, but the best thing you can do is get word of mouth and keep educating about IP theft.

About 15 months ago, people were saying that SL was going to implode because we were seeing 25k people online at once. It's too much! The grid can't take it!!! When I joined, it was 10k online at once that was going to make the grid cook itself..

/me shrugs. Some things are worse, some things are better. I think it's still got some life left in it.

There's a Starax one at the Blackwater sim. Probably others about but it's the only one of his I've seen..

Yes, I am amazed at the doom-sayers. From a business perspective, the business I help to manage had its best month ever in December, and January is shaping up to look similar. We are certainly not seeing a decline, and we're not a new business, either - been around for well over six months - an age in SL time.
