When I am on I tend to be flooded with ims from a bunch of friends which is fine....I try to tp home in these circumstances as I hate to just be standing still in a place while juggling the convos. The best times though are when talking in im to someone and trying to chat in world at the same time I forget to switch and say the wrong thing in the wrong convo! LOL
When my friends are offline and it is quiet, I like to go to welcome island and just "listen" with my eyes. I have met some really great people there!
Voice chat still scares me however....I dont know if I could ever get the hang of it.

SL is a very lonely place for me. Ironically I joined SL BECAUSE I was lonely.
me too Winter...and my main language is English It's not that i dont try..I just never have been able to understand the whole social structure of creening ones neck and dancing around like a bird while i search for my place in the caste heirarchy. ~Lana Tomba

I'm forcing myself to keep it on now. SL is kinda social therapy for me. (^_^) It's still haunting to hear a loli friend that comes across like a chain-smoking british bartender because of the voice changer (s)he is using. (>_< As for text chat... I find myself in places where it's near impossible to keep up there are so many people in open chat. Really, if you want to find talkative people, you just have to find talkative places. Welcome areas are still nice for some silly LOLs. It kinda helps to be tolerant of the drama sometimes. (^_^)y

The conversation is better than you'll find at a Welcome Area, and the people bathe more frequently.

From: Lindal Kidd /me thinks this is a silly thread.
I talk to people all the time. On the forums (duh!) in chat, in IM, on voice...
And I've met very few people who won't talk to me. Except Ray, of course, and I forgive him. He probably had fifteen or twenty IMs going at the time.
SL is all about the talk. It's an interactive world. If it weren't for that, the graphics and animation quality isn't good enough to keep people coming back all by themselves.
Having said that, I'll admit that it seems to come and go in cycles. Some days, I'm so busy meeting people and talking to them that I don't have time to turn around. Other times, the world is empty, and the few people I meet are bots or don't speak english or don't care to converse with me.
So...just wait a bit. Your problem will go away. Hmm. It's not a problem, Lindal. Simply an observation. Shrugs. Invariably *I* am talking to someone.

From: Cherry Czervik Caledon is lovely Void but in all the times I have been there I've never once seen a soul ... LOL
Me neither. And I even bought a nice Regency outfit for it. (I know Regency is a little antiquated for Caledon, but there is one Regency era sim there.) I must visiting at the wrong time of day. For those above who shy away from broadcasting their in jokes -- surely you've been hit with some of the Forum Cartel group IM chatter. Far from being annoying, it keeps me company while I'm building, even if I'm nowhere near the hangout. Pretty cool. And I like the vicarious adventures I "hear" about on some of the outings and events while they're taking place if I can't be there to join in.

People just don't want to be AR'ed for having conversations which others within ear/type-shot might deem 'offensive'. I found that in the last year most keep their conversations to IM while in public.

Hmm one reason I can think of is a lot of the avatars you might walk past aren't people, just bots. Another is all the new viewers seem to do their damnest to make local chat hidden from view. Funny enough, I have been back in WoW over the last week to close my account, I just popped my level 10 chars into LvL1 spawning areas, and waited for Newbs to give all my stuf to before deleting characters. And the number of times my opening "Hello!" was completely ignored was amazing, most were veterans, so hit the ground running, one even replied as running away, "sorry too busy powerleveling to chat!", and lost the opportunity of gaining a heap of level 16 stuff applicable to his same classed character. Overall I managed to find 2 Newbs to give stuff too out of 10 characters I deleted. They weren't total newbs, but not experienced either. Also the servers I used to play on, in general are empty of players, compared to when I played them.

See? It's not just SL then. I actually went into an IRC channel last night, the usual suspects were around. I got a ton of "where the hell have you been!??" IMs but the public chat? Nada, virtually. Hopped around a few old internet haunts and nothing much doing there either apart from trolls. Maybe the novelty of being able to communicate en masse has palled for many people? Or they are just jaded and cynical

I doubt very much that the Cartel members want to hear any of my in jokes somehow
