Excellent news...

Hopefully the licensed advertisers won't try and abuse their position.

The good news therefore, is that Network advertising (Ad Farming) will no longer be permitted on the Linden Mainland unless you have a written agreement with Linden Lab (essentially meaning a license to advertise). Anyone currently operating such a business inworld will need to remove their adverts by the 1st October 2008.
Wow.

I'm still reading it, but wow.

Edits and happydances at this bit:

From: Second Life Blog
Licensee’s will be limited in number, capped to a specific number of advert locations and with strict rules about how their adverts look. No more spinning, floating cubes, no more unsolicited notecard givers, no more improper use of ban lines.

It is great news but I'll remain cautiously optimistic until I actually see the policy changes.

Requireing a license is a policy change, isn't it?

Great news in deed, can only hope they enforce it with bigger boots than they've other such things in the past.

No amount of cheering can effectively put my opinion of this into words. So I'll leave it with ABOUT FREAKING TIME and cut straight to the juicy details.

Enforcement of the policy, particularly of "edge cases", will be vitally important to the strength of this ban.

I can hear the current farmers coming up with "Linden legal" applications of their businesses as I type this message. Following up on this policy will be key. Equally key, will be the execution of the written word.

But so far, I like this move. A LOT.

Absolutely, that's what's going to make or break this. But my faith has been renewed!

This is SUCH encouraging news! I love the mainland and I am so glad to see LL taking an interest in it again.

Lindal, now that you have dealt with the ad farms, could you go tell off the bot owners?

Finally I know someone with clout!

There is a need for real advertising in SL. Maybe once the extortionists are out the legit needs can be met.

The idea here, is that where we do allow a small amount of network advertising to take place, it is highly controlled, low impact and managed responsibly. Licensee’s will be limited in number, capped to a specific number of advert locations and with strict rules about how their adverts look. No more spinning, floating cubes, no more unsolicited notecard givers, no more improper use of ban lines.

Holy WOW. I am cautiously optimistic here. If enforced, this should get rid of our 16 sq.m. ad farm cube nightmares for good.

I won't have a party yet - I'll wait to see how this plays out. But I am very happy that the folks at LL are finally listening to the howls of the citizens and attempting to respond.

nothings more needed than a means to really advertise outside of groups and other nonsense. BUT I fear that only sanitized adds will be tolerated. No adult content adds or such. So censorship still will be a issue.

If inworld advertising was any good then legit needs would have been met long ago. I've challenged the extortionists to come up with a good ad network more than once. Now their bluff has been well and truly called.

Now if they can work on the bots and data miners.

Hopefully they give Dave and Weedy a license right away so they dont get Ar'd

They don't adfarm but a lot of people won't realize that.

That goes for a lot of other network type deals.

I wonder if LL can just...de rez these, with a program?

If it's going to happen only through Lindens physically (well, virtually) flying around the Mainland, then the process of removing them is going to take a LONG time. Because there are.....more than a few spinning, floating rectangular prisms in SL.

This, I'm even more curious about. How will 'improper' be defined in this context?

I dislike ban lines intensely. I can't even imagine a situation in which I'd choose to use them.

But......???

/me stops jumping up and down long enough to compose IMs to a couple of neighbors whose teeny plots are suddenly worth a lot less than they thought they were.

I just never understood the what the purpose is..what data? Weedy tried to explain it to me once but I really didn't get it. Must be useful tho cause they have been at it for a long time. And Weedy is very good at trading plots with you if one is in the middle of your land.
