I just read a thread in which someone said that people dont tend to stay if they dont build, script or texture. Well, I build only a bit, cant texture and the kinda scripts I like arent the ones used here. I stay here for the company and the interest I have in meeting people and really being nosy. I d have an intimate relationship BUT mainly I like the interaction. An I the exception or are dunderheads like me common to sl? What do YOU stay here for if you dont build, script or texture? Just being nosy.

I'm just here to socialize (and shop when I'm bored ) and stuck around for 18 months now . If my friends list is anything to go by, not many people stick around for long (6 months to 1 year plus) though, or their SL use significantly diminishes .

It's certainly not true that nobody who doesn't create content stays in SL.
Content creators are _less likely_ to leave - most obviously because they might well have a business that's making money even if they don't do very much. Such a business will eventually be outcompeted and fail, but that can take a long while to happen.
Also, the kind of people who come here expecting _different_ social interactions will often gravitate to content creation. The chap who's posted twice here asking how he can get superpowers is a case in point. Many people will believe that the way to stand out - to get a sort of "super power", is to create things. And at one point it _did_ work that way, but it doesn't so much anymore, since in most fields there are enough businesses that have a professional attitude and are customer focused that a business run on a different basis will find it hard to break in. Typically, the person will then either decide that they enjoy creating things for its own sake, and/or earning money, and will change to that customer-focussed attitude, or they will get frustrated and leave.

I used to be a social butterfly when I was first in SL, trying the club scene, dancing that kinda stuff, it got boring fast, going to places that have their own little groups and everyone else gets pretty much ignored.
so I decided to see what I could do with SL, instead of what SL could do with me hehe
and I ventured into making clothing, just to see if I could.
well friends told me my stuff was good and I should have a store, so I made a store, never did get a lot in sales (even though ppl continually say they love the stuff) but never put their money where their mouth is LOL (I get some sales but very few)
Then I ventured into building and loved it and created some textures for myself, got hired to manage some casino businesses and sim (when it was legal) then that all went plop, got hired to be a girl Friday which resulted in having the use of a full sim, so I built a city (which is slowly being disassembled.
Now I work as a greeter for a company, still have my own store (just made skins WOOOT!!) and I also build on the side (which reminds me I need to do pics and list the last 2 builds) I just redid my store and arcade, looks way cooler hehe been also in the process of implementing my Real Life merchandise business into SL (Real Life Merchandise is the actual name of the company heh) so basically I will have a 3d website as it were.
I am also a second life mentor and love to help ppl when I can. been thinking about having some beginner classes for clothing design and basic building. (maybe someday)
now what was the question... oh what do I do if I am not a builder etc.... um... I build and etc LOL (but was not always a builder and etc, so at that time I stayed because of the folks I met, and the enjoyment I had out of socializing).
I think everyone evolves as they spend time in SL, some will make things, some will offer personal shopper type services, or interior decorator, some go on to becomes proficient scripters, the list is endless I think many ppl, as they spend time in SL, find more and more things to explore and things that they did not expect that they themselves could do.
EEEK sorry about the long post, if you read this far, all I can say is... wow! heh

I am not here for business purposes but I do like being creative. Sometimes it does seem bit lonely though and I wish I could share my newest creations and talk to more people sometimes. I do have friends that I hang out with but truthfully I think it would be really hard if you were strictly interested in socializing because of the nature of the platform but that just my opinion.

I'm here for the beer and the bitches! No just kidding. I socialize quite a bit and rarely ever seem to get any SL work done. I've been here for just under a year and don't plan on going anywhere unless LL implodes.

I don't even think I like dancing...

I find myself often drained by the social interactions I have in real life, so for me it's great to get away from it all and try to create things in SL. The occasional chat in the Forum Cartel hangout, and the Forum itself, seem to be all I need. I'm not here to be all serious and business-like though. I have never sold anything.
I don't see a thing wrong with just socializing either. That's the beauty of this platform. It's completely open ended. You can do anything or nothing, and anything in between, and except for griefing it's all correct.

If you see me socialising, chit chatting etc, I am usually bored and at a loose end.
I like helping people.
I love to spend time with my loved ones.
Mainly tho I am waiting to be gripped by the next thing I HAVE to make. It doesn't matter if it never stays ... I am starting to think I prefer things not to stay and need looking after cos it means I can't create.
I love to BUILD.

Been here just over a year now - and have spent much of that time socialising. Went through the whole relationship thing and vowed never to do that again. Tried working as a dancer but got bored pretty quick.
I did begin to make clothes but my time in SL is pretty limited, and I realised to get any good I'd have to invest a whole load of time in building the skills I'd need. I wasn't prepared to spend 100% of my SL time on that so stopped.
It's always good just to try things though. I've recently brought some of my RL photography in world, and am now looking for a place to display/sell. Also honing my SL photography skills as I put my portfolio together.
I guess you'd call it 'light content creation'. Stuff which I find fun but but isn't too time consuming. I can pick it up and put it down at any point, so it doesn't dominate my limited SL time.

You can be in SL for whatever reason you want to be ! That can be socialising, being creative, running a business, shopping or just exploring or looking at the wonderful creations of other people !
Learning to build and texture, etc. can help you understand the sheer effort and talent involved in everything you see around you (and it is easy as it can be in SL, having sat through dozens of lectures on graphics design and programming, believe me, LL could not have made a more wonderful;y easy to learn building interface).
However.... you don't NEED to have to build or texture !

I was originally here for socializing, then went to business for a while, but am now back to socializing mostly. Still, I do enjoy messing around in sand boxes and creating.

According to my Inventory, I'm apparently here for the clothes and hair. If I had this wardrobe in RL, the entire house would have to be my closet. I haven't a creative bone in my body when it comes to content creation in SL. For now I am happy meeting people and exploring all of the amazing work that others do. Whether it is enough or not, only time will tell.

When I first got over the initial 'rush' I decided to buy some land, do a little terra-forming, a little building. In an earlier life I used to tinker with BASIC and Z80 Assembly Language but the temptation to look into LSL never arose. I started meeting people from around the world .. and got hooked.
I love socialising. My RL is a bit quiet on that score so SL is my great chance to chat .. and chat ... and chat. One of my most vivid memories is sitting on a wall outside the Three Lions with a RL/SL chum all Sunday afternoon just exchanging with whoever came along and wanted to spend time there. I think I had a beer in my hand RL and SL too!
I passed my first birthday a couple of weeks back. I still don't script, build or texture and it's still like being a kid in a toyshop everytime I login.

Hi,
I started by just wandering around aimlessly. Then I found a great beach with a great bunch of people, many of whom are still my friends. The socialising began.
Then the owner of said beach encouraged me to build my first box and I found the texturing forum. The rest is history so to speak.
I still socialise and also try to help people as much as I can.
Would socialising be enough to keep me around? No idea, but after 11 months I'm still permanently awestruck by this little world of ours.
And by the music, which I blame for my lack of sleep.

I came here first just to look around. Rented myself a small house where I did learn to build a little then wanted a bigger one. To pay for the extra land I decided to try and sell things to help with the costs and then found that sort of snowballed and found myself too busy building to socialise much. Within a few months I make enough to cover my 1/4 sim shop and my 4096 home with some left over for my spending and cash out. I have now got to the stage where I try and split my time here between business and pleasure as just building is very lonely. I am now even trying RP with an alt which I have never done before, as you can do more than one thing here

I build and texture although I can't script. I've made quite a lot of stuff inluding my home and most of the stuff in it. So I've invested a lot of creativity in SL. I also used to deal in land a bit, on a small scale. But I like to socialise and go for long stretches when I don't do any building. I think the fact that SL is mostly user-created is an important attraction, but I'd stay even if I stopped building. To me the secret of contentment in SL is to know enough about places and things of interest in-world to be able to keep the chat in-world rather than talk about RL all the time. I also do SL photography and regularly post pics of on Flickr.

Good Morning All!
From my experience over the last six months, I'd say that in a general rule that the majority don't stay if they just socialize. It's fun in the beginning, very exciting, and you get the thrill of building up friends. Over time you watch as many of those friends slowly fade away and it becomes more work to build new friends again, but for many the excitement is no longer there. I also think much of it has to do with how addictive it can be. So many spend way too many hours on here at first that they become burned out.
I think if you have a specific venue, such as sally mentioning the music, or a job that is fun or create then you are more likely to hang around.

Socialising is definately not enough for me. I build build build. I did go to a few clubs and the screen was just full of ***WOOOOOOT!!!!*** ***WOOOOOOT!!!!*** ***WOOOOOOT!!!!*** and other stuff, ppl wernt chatting on the screen much so I guess they were all in IM. So I took all my primmy barbie crap off and went back to building

While a lot of my friends build-things, I'd say the majority of them are socialisers, if they build something it's for themselves, not for a business or anything.
So I suppose they'd still possibly come under the category of content creators, but they do it for themselves, creating that more of a personalised space that they become attached to.
