Have you also noticed that if you do a search for "skin" it will not return anything with "skins" in it. The new search is very poorly implemented. Partial word searches are not supported in either Old or New search, and it kind of sucks. (I wonder if there's some google voodoo you can use in New Search, sort of wildcard functionality.) This is why so many place descriptions have multiple versions of the same word, because you don't know exactly how people are going to phrase their searches. _____________________

The default Google connector is AND, but you can use OR if you want. So entering Albatrross OR Zeus gives results with either albatross or zeus.
So you can get results for skin or skins by using "skin OR skins". You can use wildcards for whole words, so, in quotes, "hit spot" produces nothing, while "hit * spot" finds a few places that say "hit the spot". Google does word stemming by default, which would mean by default it would return results with "bats" and "batted" when the search term was bat. I think LL has set this word stemming off on purpose. _____________________

Huh. A few weeks ago you could search "link:" followed by a URL to find all pages that link to it.

It doesn't seem like it's working now The format is/was "link:http://blabla" But I mean, what would you link to? A slurl? I know how the link thing works for Google on the web site, but SL doesn't use HTTP URLs. _____________________

Partial word searches are not supported in either Old or New search, and it kind of sucks. (I wonder if there's some google voodoo you can use in New Search, sort of wildcard functionality.) ("cat's" used to trigger on "cat", "cats", "cat's" and "cats'" like you'd expect it to) But I mean, what would you link to? A slurl? I know how the link thing works for Google on the web site, but SL doesn't use HTTP URLs. Example: http://world.secondlife.com/place/734d1d3a-1960-01be-d028-414f3a1db819 (Susi Machinima Gallery - the best machima artists in SL) Gets a link-back from http://world.secondlife.com/place/http://world.secondlife.com/resident/a2e76fcd-9360-4f6d-a924-000000000003 (Philip Linden's profile). If you meant what link do you use to promote your own place, you can't. It only counts links as they appear on world.secondlife.com, nowhere else. |

Been all over trying to ascertain the info and find it in the least an elusive prey gl

You're never going to get the exact algorithm, so that's a waste of time. All you will get is the canned answer, which is what you SHOULD get, since people game this so badly.

If someone "games" it then they know what I and and many others don't, giving them more ability to "game". I don't need nor want the algorythms, my one remaining brain cell already stretched beyond recognition just a better idea and being put on par with those who would "game"
I just love an even playing field) . |

I can't believe you don't know how to do it, Ray. It's been discussed enough times here

Hi Phil,
sorry to give the impression I know what I am doing l(just anudder toon without a battery) lol. My placement in search has always been in the top ten and often in the top 3. However, I heard that changes have been made to the search criteria while I was away remoldling a house in RL, so not sure if what I know is still relavent. Also, rudy2zday my partner, attended a class supposedly pertaining to this subject but lacking any real new info regarding this paticullar subject. So, using search and tp'ing about I got further confused on the heiarchy of placement. For ex. I saw many places with low traffic numbers in the #1 placement, with higher traffic places further down the list, some with names that would also suggest a closer match to the search words I was using, so I surmissed that traffic nor search words were the main attributes but only parts of the equation (thought I had it figured out when land size started showing color but that turned into a false flag). I did learn a few other things but those I will keep close to my chest . I sought to have the Lindens direct me to any knowledge based article that would elucidate the process so to not go on the opinions or assumptions of others. So, please, if you can direct me to anything like what I have described, I'll look like a taxi with both doors open (all ears ) |

![]() Btw, after reading the thread I feel like dragging out "Google Hacks" and re-reading it lol. I originally set things up Land desc. Land name etc with the concept of meta-tags. It does not appear all that different though a few things did surprise me which gives me something more to do. I must admit to having a few idea's a bit outside the box that I wanted to be sure my understandings where close before implementing. All that searching I did payed off with some idea's as it usually does . Tysm for the headsup. Fhelzgud Free Public Yard Sale supports many artists, designers & builders and we can use all the help we can get. |

I think the only significant change since that thread is that there is no longer a Classifieds category in the All search. It makes sense, because the search application is written to rank according to relevancy, and not to things like the amount paid. The way that traffic is accounted for is by creating traffic numbers pages, with links to the places, but they can't do that with classifieds, because it wouldn't have a big enough effect to end up with rankings according to prices.

Rather than reviving that other VERY helpful thread, I'll post something here that I overlooked the first time RE: Googlebombing Picks.
No matter what you change when adding a pick, it still has a link to the land with it's original title and original description. So if you change 'good' to 'bad', 'good' would still get a bump in the search ranks because of those links, right? The real downside would be people searching for 'bad' would be wasting their time TPing to 'good'. And doing this, I doubt that 'bad' would ever rank higher than 'good', since 'good' has the land and it's description working for it and the gbomber only has edited picks. Unless 'good' was not optimizing their search via Title and Description and 'bad' used that to make its search terms rank higher. But again, that's a lot of work for 'bad' to make 'good' score higher with another search term. I don't see a win here for 'bad' or a loss for 'good', as long as 'good' is fully optimizing their searches. And what about the Web tab in your profile? Is this also considered a link to the spider? And what would the effect be if your signature on this forum contained your link? Does the spider search here too? And does it search outside of SL on other pages, such as SLexchange or Onreaz or Myspace or Facebook, etc..? |
