[SL5B] is all about Cultures this year, and so I need some Inspiration! When you hear or see the words Asian Culture, what do you think about, see or wonder? What would you like to see at an Asian Culture Exhibit? What do you want to know about Asian Culture, and what languages does it make you think of? Does it make you wonder about Japanese Heritage, lifestyle? Would you like information on Chinese History, history of Singapore? Let me know! I'm also looking for people who have Asian Art, to submit it for the event. Get Involved! I look forwards to hearing from you, everyone please post here! Meghan Dench "yRobot" Liason - SL5B

"Asian" Culture
05-25-2008 20:17
I'd like to see something that shows us the subtleties of culture...that it's not all Chinese New Years or Geisha girls or whatever. If it was possible, I'd like to see Iraq, Iran, India, Pakistan, Syria, you name it....Indonesia, Phillipines, Vietnam....all "Asian" but all vastly different.
SL gives us a great opportunity to go beyond what we see on CNN or what we think we know, or the stereotypes we've grown up with...I'd like to see us take advantage of that.

Meghan Dench "yRobot" Liason - SL5B i love Japanese history, and culture. it goes way back for me. i have a little mall that basically encompasses the peace and serenity Japanese culture means to me... a one-ness with nature.. i have a customer there who makes art, and 2 others who do bonzais. in the corner, one also has a spiritual center for meditating and counseling. if you feel like finding them, i'm sure they wouldn't mind being contacted directly. as near as i can tell, they are around for the cultural aspect more than a financial aspect. Wren Mall. i look forward to following this thread.

"Asian culture" is very hard to categorise as Asia is a continent with lots of countries and diverse cultures. Jane2 McMahon is right when she says they're all "Asian" but all vastly different. Even in a single country like Singapore or Malaysia, you can find a number of cultures mixing as there are a number of ethnic groups living in the same country.
Usually when I see "Asian culture", I think about how stereotypical the portrayal is. It's often only the big or more well-known countries that get featured, like China or Japan, and sometimes Vietnam. Even Thailand seems to get overlooked a fair bit.

It would be interesting to have links to sims that feature and honor Asian Culture. Showcase them and how they honor the culture.

I've a broad and shallow understanding of Japanese history & culture, ranging on topics as diverse as sumo, ukiyo-e, the Tokugawa Shogunate and anime. I'm well aware that my knowledge is a very thin slice of one culture from a whole raft of Asian countries. Nothing makes my teeth clench as much as boiling the whole country down to sushi, ninjas (sic) and hentai.
So to answer the question, Asian culture mainly means Japan to me, but obviously there's a whole lot more.

If you're trying to do a showcase of Asian culture and looking to make it a distinct and difference experience to what you might already find in Second Life, I'd suggest avoiding anything Japanese and looking to the other cultures of Asia. There's a preponderance of Japanese sims/stores in Second Life, whilst other Asian cultures - such as those of the Indian subcontinent, Thailand and South-East Asia, China, Tibet or the central Asian steppes - are entirely overlooked, if not missing.
But there are a lot of people from these places in SL. One of my favourite designers is from the Philippines and tries to tie her cultural heritage into the clothing she makes. There are a few people dotted about the grid who are trying to do the same with Indian designs.
For me when people say 'Asia', it really brings to mind the two great and enduring civilizations of India and China, who between them have birthed more religions, philosophies, inventions, writers, poets and architects and have bought had a strong and lasting geopolitical influence on all the cultures and civilizations that sit around them.

Because I live on the 'Asian' side of the world, 'Asian Culture' can't even begin to adequately describe the many differences between countries and their peoples in this neck of the woods. Even within a single country - whether it be China, India, Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam, for example - there is not one homogenous culture. So in terms of any celebration of 'Asian Culture', I would prefer to see people from those countries invited to express what they see as intrinsic elements of their culture, which is likely to be far more insightful (and perhaps surprising to some) than an outsider's interpretation.

I'm always interested in what a person in a particular country is eating at the time. I mean what do they typically eat at home or at a restaurant. I sometimes ask people this when I talk to them and find they are in a far away country.
I guess I'd like to see a snapshot of daily life in a particular country.

Eck it's a little bit late for that, as the main Infrastructure on the sim is Japanese, because it's what I had and know, but it's going to contain echibits from all of Asia, whatever we can do, I will make sure we do it. I am so happy to see so much feedback! We'll not only be exhibiting builds, but a few pieces of art, so I'll try and get some other Asian art apart from Chinese and Japanese in there, Id love to see some Indian exhibitd, and Thai exhibits, because they really interest me. However there's only so much we can fit on one sim, and in so little time. I will say though, there's going to be a build for Singapore History, so it's not all Japan and China. I'm really excited about this. So far I've gone mainly with Japan, it's what I know most. Water, Gardens and Traditional builds, but I promise that if you apply to do a Indian Build etc. I will make it happen! Also, if you have any content you can 'donate' please say so, I will get it included. Some great feeback guys! And damn right, I want it to be more than just Japan and China. And also to bring us all together!

Maybe I can put together some recipies in a notecard to give out too, and take some Snapshots of the temple here, and the peple in it in Real Life, then Display them at the build.

When I think of Asian culture, I think of the religions. I'm very drawn to Zen, Taoism....Tibetan Buddhism. I know that's but a portion of Asian culture but that is what I think of. As far as art, I think of Zen rock gardens and the calligraphy. I think of stone Buddhas and shit on a stick.

I always think of the Nanking Massacre/unannouced war by Japan on China in 1937, and how it should be in the history books, unfortunately.
If they cleared THAT up, maybe I would just think of chopsticks or somethin.
