Great story. I've sent the link to a few friends that just can't seem to see any benefit to SL.

That's great. Thanks for sharing. While I do agree that not all with disabilities can afford such opportunities (I work with the disabled), the price of technology is always decreasing. For those who can right now, it's very helpful.
Despite all the negativity, I do believe there is more good in SL than not. It's lifechanging for many, including myself.
Thanks again.

From: George Standish Nice to see a piece about the beauty of SL for a change. Oh, you think that they must be wealthy disableds? Lol. Any "poor" person could get a group of like minded people to pool resourses and maybe buy an island. Though I suspect that it is funded in some form. One island for first year is about 6k, yearly close to 4k. Most developers charge a whole lot let say 5k at the least. Someone who is been disabled and is on getting federal or state aid from USA who has never worked at most might make 7200 usd a year. If you living in a Adult care home or similar place they take all of it except maybe 50 dollars a month. I know because several casemanagers wanted to me to go to a Adult care home and I refused because I like having my freedom and I don't want to live on 50 dollars a month. Even if the 6 pooled 50 dollars all together that would mean they would have nothing left for anything else. Even if you needed a pair of socks you wouldn't be able to afford this with tier at 295 a month.

From: Nimbus Rau I can't view the video. I'm guessing it will only play to US residents, since that's something that I've run into before with US TV network based streaming video.
Anyone care to provide subtitles for the geographically disadvantaged? Try a different browser, wouldn't load for me in firefox, but does fine in IE. I am glad there was a link to this, I was wondering if Wilde was still around, hadn't heard much about them lately

It is with great happiness that I have been reading all the wonderful posts today both here & in the SLUniverse forums. I hope you will indulge me as I repeat here the text of my SLUniverse post. In there I addressed (I hope) an issue or two that some posters may have had. Our world continues to amaze me every single day, not only by the unbridled creativity of its residents but by the emotion & enthusiasm by which we express our feelings on any individual issue which affects our special universe. There is so much to say today, and since I rarely post much I will take the courtesy afforded to an *old woman* and say what I will. I have had a great deal of publicity for many reasons during my years in Second Life. Early on I headed the first development teams to build recreations of two children’s stories, Oz & Neverland which brought *Baccara* to the eyes to both reporters and our world in general. I was indeed SL's first event planner beginning in the fall of 2003. During those times very few people knew about my MS; that information was saved for a few closest to me. In addition, I have been the subject of profile articles by the New World Notes, the New York Times, The Complete Guide to Second Life and others as far as Tokyo. All of these were about my work and certainly not my MS. Somewhere along the line, however I decided that it was important to divulge the fact that I had been sidelined by illness in order to bring to light the amazing help Second Life had been in making my adjustment to a new way of life much easier. I hope it has spurred others on to enjoy, work & play in Second Life. These were some of the reasons that I believe CBS sought me out for this particular profile. I want to be perfectly clear that I do not consider myself *disabled* but rather challenged by life. Everyone gets sidelined during a lifetime, it is how we face it that makes us stronger. I have met so many challenged people in SL, most with positive attitudes and verve for life that keeps them strong & happy. Both my dear friend Stroker Serpentine & I were very clear with CBS that we were interested in participating in these profiles if they were to be above board & positive. They have, I believe, listened and created a wonderful series of which we can all be proud. Who is luckier than I? I have had access to friends from all over the globe and been able to build a new business life for myself with the help of so many in my path. I have a supportive family that appreciates me & puts up with my forays into a *virtual* world where yes, sometimes I can accomplish that which is no longer open to me in the tactile universe. Mash Mandala and I have worked so very hard to make Depoz a good shopping experience for all our customers & have been rewarded with a measure of financial success. He has been by my (virtual) side and the very best partner that anyone can wish for. It is together that we have accomplished so much, little of which I would have done alone. I constantly have to pinch myself to realize that this IS an extension of my world, a place I hope that I have helped to build. It is my hope that these profiles from CBS (there are more coming) will bring not only more people to SL that perhaps can benefit from it as I did, but will bring a better understanding to those people all of us love in our real world who to this point may not understand our lives here. I did not and do not remain in Second Life for strictly financial reasons. It is an incredible bonus to my life. More than that, I treasure each & every one of you who has been my friend, helped me through some tough medical moments, & taught me new things every single day. While I realize as we all do that SL will continue to endure growing pains, I remember to say Thanks to those people at LL who really do try their best to give us a good experience. Nothing is perfect all the time. (I certainly don’t think I am) To all of you who posted today I appreciate your compliments, your candor & your willingness to be, whatever your beliefs may be. I hope to continue to meet so many more of you in Second Life and remain here for a very long time. My very best wishes for a Joyous, Healthy, & Happy Holiday and a Peaceful New Year. Baccara Rhodes (Nanci Schenkein)

That was really wonderful! I'll just echo what everyone else is saying, and say that it's great to see a story that shows how SL can transform lives for the better. Anytime I need to cheer up or remind myself how truly revolutionary SL is, I'll remember this. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Wilde yet, but I do recall the first stories about the group behind the avatar; really a lovely story. Very cool to see Pathfinder visiting there! I have many fond memories of Neverland-- great place. Thanks for sharing your story, Baccara-- and I just have to say, you have a fabulous haircut.

From: George Standish Post #23 explains how they manage. Thumbs up to people helping people! I am very grateful for the friends I have in SL who have helped me in numerous ways. I am all for people helping people. The great thing for people who have life challenges like myself is SL does give people opportunities they normally wouldn't have.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Its sooo refreshing and revitalizing to me to see something good about SL posted in these forums instead of the rapant negativity that seems to predominate.
In RL i work with disabled folks of all kinds and I can say that this story taps into the empathy I feel and hope I have for them.
Whoever helped fund "Wilde"s entry into and maintenance of their island in SL deserves many blessings...and Baccara...what can i say but "grats" to you girl! You inspire me!
/me scampers off with happy energy.....
