It has entertained me.

@Whatever: Do you work for the News of the World or National Enquirer? Metaphorically, they are welcome to it, but I need the actual item for the time being. Now if only it the process could be done in RL with the click of a button and a few sliders.

A person will answer the question differently depending on how long they've been using SL. Newcomers will probably be more positive about what they've taken from SL.

In 10 years time I expect to see the OP posting about how SL destroyed his life. :)

Because everyone he wrote about in his novels is going to sue him. :p

Wow... cross-thread trolling. You lessen your effectiveness when you try too hard.

I was just exagerating to prove my point. The point being the longer we use something the less we gain from it. Thankfully most of us move on before something becomes totally redundant.

I've got my cases packed.

Oh dear- what will you do when u get tired of physical life?

SL- hmm- more than I care to share in public tvm - some ups and downs but overall life is heaven- four years and counting.

Let's see...

1: SL took the place of an RP forum that I had been part of for 7 years. One of my best friends in that forum left to play in SL, and I followed her here. Within a few months, virtually all the time I used to spend in that text-based forum was spend in SL, instead. And that was a fairly large shift in time spend, since I was an admin and very active in that forum.

2: SL caused me to re-evaluate the time I was spending in a historical re-enactment club, which I had been active in for many, many years. And I had to admit that the things I could be doing in SL interested me far more, and were much more profitable financially, then the interactions I was getting from members of that club. I dropped out of that club, and spent more time in SL.

3: SL caused me to greatly expand my abilities as a graphic artist, and gave me a place to sell my art that was actually appreciated. My texture art and my building services in SL have been more viable as a business than many real-world start-ups that I have tried, or than many of the "arts and crafts" things I used to try to make and sell in real-life.

4: SL has expanded the number of friends that I interact with on a daily basis. I'm something of a "shut-in" in RL, since I telecommute full-time on my day job. SL allows me to interact with people outside my family. Since in RL I don't hang out in bars or clubs, I would have virtuallly no social outlets if it were not for SL. (The club I mentioned in point two wasn't viable for me as a social venue. I think I could count my entire list of real friends in that club on one hand. I had moved to my current region several years ago, and never was accepted in any of the social cliques in that club in the new region.)

5: SL has provided a small second income for me, that I can earn while remaining at home and available to my family. Without the income I get from SL, my family would be worse-off financially.

I'm no longer spending $60 a week on Anime DVDs and running fansub bittorrents on my laptop 24/7. And, I actually communicate with people now. (^_^)y

Sigh. My best friend is STILL doing this. And she's writing anime slash fanfiction, which apparently takes all her time. I keep telling her that she should come to SL - she could DO anime slash fanfiction.

I came to Second life after a nearly fatal car accident. I had never been in a virtual world, rarely chatted, and had never played computer games. I was in and out of the hospital, in bed, and in a wheelchair for seven months. I guess you can imagine what Second Life meant to me back then.

I was pretty sure I was going to leave once I started getting better, and while I obviously spend a lot less time online now, I have no desire to leave at all. I used to party a lot offline ... now I party a little and spend more time being a sensation junky (flying, driving, boating, playing SL golf, shopping) online, and building crazy things you could never afford offline.

I have managed to keep my shopping addiction in SL - I still absolutely hate RL shopping.

Me too, and will do all rl shopping I possibly can, online. If I absolutely must go, I will procrastinate until whatever the item is I need becomes an emergency and I can no longer put it off. I also don't 'wander' around. I go in, make a beeline for the item I am after, buy it and leave, I'm done.

So does my fear of heights lol.

Bec

OMG me too. A friend, I trusted, sent me a tp saying 'youve got to see this place!'. Because I knew him, I accepted and arrived on the cliff of an endless mountain. couldn't see the top nor the bottom, just clinging to this outcropping. I totally panicked, and hit TP home. He hadn't known about my fear of heights, but I found it interesting that still exists in SL

Aw...congrats, Lance! And you're right, no one can top that, I think.

For me, SL has taught me that I can do a fair number of things I hadn't considered doing, certainly not at a professional level. In RL, I had/have the archetypal "good job": it paid the bills, allowed for travel, had flexible (if long) hours, even was mildly prestigious. But it was not at all challenging, at least not anymore.

SL creation and running a business here has taught me that I can pursue more creative ways of paying the bills. I cut back on my hours at that good job and went back to college, this time to study what I really wanted to study: graphic design and three dimensional modeling. I'm finishing up my first year, and of course, I picked the worst time in recent history to contemplate a job change. But my instructors seem fairly positive about my work, and more importantly, I have a self confidence about putting my work forward that I never had two years ago.

Perhaps I will say in ten years "ZOMG, SL ruined my life! I should have stayed where I was!" But we only live once, as they say. I doubt very much that I will regret trying, even if I don't succeed.

SL has augh me a lot about 3D modeling and C++ programming, met heaps of cool people and had a great time being who I wanted to be without RL peer pressures.
And possibly also contributed to my Glaucoma :P
