There are far more "emissions" we should maybe be concerned about:

I live in the Arctic and that whole global whining thing is bunk. The past three years the winters have been longer, colder and we've gained arctic ice and permafrost. Our summers are also colder. We had 7 days this summer where the temperature got above 65f.
I've lived off the grid before, that is without electrical, plumbing and an adequate source of heating. It's miserable. Try it for a while and see how you like it. I guarantee you won't be as concerned with your carbon footprint afterward. |

The more feet you have, the less carbon used per foot, so to lower the carbon footprint, a millipede avatar might be just the thing.

I would indeed like numbers for other activities for comparison. If for instance we all abandoned our cars (I have actually) and went back to horses, would they not produce as many greenhouse gases as automobiles or more? Running a computer is like running a 200 watt hair dryer for hours though, so it's not something I'm taking lightly. But I agree, what is the carbon footprint for a book? Or a TV show (which I refuse to watch)? I'm not versed enough nor honestly aware enough to get a handle on what "1,752 kilowatt hours of electricity per year" means in a relative sense to other daily activities and energy consumption, so I agree it would be nice to have some sort of comparison. It will be interesting to see the full study when available for how these calculations were made to see if they are indeed indicative of the average SLer. Also of note is that some analysts, estimate the IT industry may have a carbon footprint that is equal to that of the airline industry. The whole thing is pretty interesting for me as I've never seen a data centre before and it's just not something I've ever even thought of or considered. http://cio.co.nz/cio.nsf/tech/4C79EC78E6A5F91ACC257392000BD3F2 _____________________

:0 and i have just had the fourth cold in just as many weeks - i'm susceptible to colds whenever the temperature shifts rapidly from below freezing to late-spring warmth, then back again. and yes, because this has been the fourth week that this section of the country has experienced temps from 10f to 60f in a matter of days...
global 'warming' does not always necessarily mean 'warm weather' for all parts of the globe. tell your yokel relatives that. (and tell them, if they vote, to do their homework, for that matter.) it's not normal to have tornado warnings in january, -period.- _____________________

for anyone interested, google responds to the claims in the first article about energy usage for a search: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/powering-google-search.html
also note i added info on how the SL numbers were calculated which is based on 2006 data including low concurrency and smaller guestimates of number of LL servers, so take it with a grain of salt. http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2006/12/avatars_consume.php _____________________

...And why is everything thats "green" more expensive? It's worse than that, Todd. No matter what you do, the Greens will rail against you. Substitute fluorescents for incandescent bulbs...and you get scalded for introducing mercury into the environment. Use ethanol instead of gasoline...and get reamed for all the plant waste you're contributing to. Use solar instead of coal or oil, and someone will point out that you used more energy to make the solar panels than they will recover during their life. And nuclear? My god, don't even go there...despite the fact that it's the cleanest energy source ever invented. It goes on and on and on. No matter what you do to be "green", it's never enough. Not unless you stop living entirely. This nihilistic attitude was illustrated in the recent popular book/movie, "The World Without Us", which praised the recovery of the planet, if man was miraculously to disappear one day. If the greens REALLY believed this philosophy, THEY'd be the ones found dead in their garages with the motor running. I'm with Brenda. Fire up the SUV. Run those wall warts. Pile those diapers in the landfills. Up your carbon footprint! Show that you matter! Global warming? Pfaugh...if humans were responsible for climate change, then how come Mars is getting warmer too? Why have the last two years been the coldest on record? Both "Global warming" and "climate change" are buzzwords that politicians and special interests use to promote their own agendas...usually greater control of you and your money and choices. _____________________

Global warming

I am only going to throw this little 2 cents in and be done.
The climate change and so on happens in cycles and just because we have only been able to keep accurate records of the temp and so forth for the past 100 yrs or so does not mean that in the 100 before that things were not similar. I do think we are causing part of it with our waste and overusage of natural resources and the way we dispose of things. But there will never be enough ppl doing something about it to really make a dif now. we as the Human race are to dependant on the easy and quick so we wont be changing anytime soon. /me hops in her SUV and runs to the store to buy the newest "green" thing. Life is just too easy to changeno |

My PC helps heat the room in winter when I'm running the video card to its limits. Does that count as a carbon footprint offset? What about the furries that wander around SL leaving their carbon pawprints behind them everywhere they go? Yep, me too! My computer is a great little heater, and that's with the power supply sitting on top of the case. Don't ask. Please... Okay, to give you a clue as to why, the case has Dell on it. That should explain everything. _____________________
