Terrible probs - is it a bug or have I hit the 'destroy my enjoyment in SL' button?

Hello all, I think I've done something stupid (again!) or picked up some kinda virus? I just wondered if anyone knows how to fix the following or is having the same problem please? For about a week now my objects (scripted, non-scripted & new builds) are omitting a kind of coloured arrow gas?!? Some objects do red misty arrows above them, some blue and even Avators that are moving do purples ones... it's almost constant and a bit blinding! I've asked in world help groups and reset SL to standard configs and even removed it completely for a reload, but nothing has stopped this. Also, when I rezz a new box and want to change the size, more often than not, the box will bounce back to a size 'it' chooses! I have to resize one item 2 or 3 times before it decides it's ok to stay that size (I'm only talking about half a metre or so, nothing too large!). The last problem is that a couple of my items have gone walkabout without me even moving them... my neighbour was most impressed with the tree trunk in her living room! I don't know what has happened, but it's destroying my enjoyment and I bet it's something simple like a box I checked by accident. Thanks soooo much for any help offered! Twirly

Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-Shift-U (Show Updates) for the 'arrows'?

The snapping back to an old size or position, aka rubber-banding, is a sign of packet loss. Packet loss can occur at the Linden Lab end of things, along the internet path, or at your end of things. You can start by seeing if changing the bandwidth slider in Preferences Network does any good. Check your draw distance, the higher it is the more likely there would be packet loss since it uses more bandwidth when you have more objects displayed. You can find a number of articles in the support system about packet loss logging in to http://support.secondlife.com and using packet loss as your search term. If you use the Advance Search option in the knowledgebase you will be able to find out what the red and blue shapes are by using "red blue shapes ", without the quotes, as your search term.

Thanks very much you three - I'll log on after our major UK storm (scary stuff!) has passed and try your suggestions. If I still find the problems continue (I forgot to mention my friends list doesn't work anymore either and I have regular chat error messages when I'm not communicating with anyone) is my last resort to get a support ticket please? This may sound daft, but I thoroughly love SL and have found this so frustrating ... I have overused all swear words known to man so I invented some new ones (I should patent them, sell them and raise funds for a new computer - if only that was a viable plan!!! ) Ty Twirly

From: Ann Launay Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-Shift-U (Show Updates) for the 'arrows'? /me gives the prize to Ann. Here's the article on what the various colors mean, Twirly: From: The KB Red: Indicates a full update, such as the creation of a prim. This will be a relatively large data packet sent to your computer. If you see objects that are showing a constant stream of red, they're contending for your bandwidth, which may cause other things in the area (like textures) to load slower. If the object is made up of many pieces, the packet will be larger.
Blue: Indicates a partial update, such as a change of position or color for a prim. These will always be smaller than full updates. However, the same rules apply as for the full updates. If you're creating content, it's a good habit to make sure it's not updating many times per second. Changing colors, textures, shape, or particle parameters several times per second will cause partial updates, and contend for your bandwidth.
Green: Indicates an ending update, such as the deletion of a prim. If this packet gets lost on the way from the server to your computer, the object will become a "ghost" --your viewer will still render it, but you can walk through it, and when you edit it, the Creator field will be blank because the object no longer exists on the server.

Ahaaa! Many thanks indeed for explaining the colours and for telling me how I could get rid of them - it's good to know it's not a bug or my RL (old) eyes having hallucinations!
I did log on earlier to have a go at fixing the problems, but sadly my swear words got the better of me and I gave up (I need sleep / some new brain cells!).
Do you guys believe that fixing the updating coloured arrows problem would also solve the new builds (boxes) resizing themselves or moving where they want to? I will log on again later and calmly (!!!) try all the wonderful suggestions.
Can I blame the upgrade for these problems or do I have to accept responsibility myself (even though I'm positive I didn't play with the settings!)? Btw, I removed Quicktime yesterday at someone's suggestion - was this a good thing please?
Thanks again lots n lots Twirly

Having the Show Updates stuff enabled might cause a drop in your FPS but it shouldn't impact building.
In a post above, SuezanneC has some info about what might cause your building problems.
Are you using a wireless setup at home?

Hello, yes we run on a wireless modem (have three 'puters running at the same time) and I am blessed (!!) with children and a hubby who like to erm.... 'improve' things for me, so this might be a case of someone tampering and not owning up.
Sadly I cannot fix my problem though I will keep trying and all the solutions posted here have been gratefully received. I will read through the forums and knowledge base again today (I'm feeling less frustrated) so I may have better luck.
Anyone fancy 1st class plane tickets to fly over to the UK and fix it for me?!?!? (if only...!)
