I had a problem similar to this recently. It didn't end up being my video card (thank God, I had just bought a new one) but it had something to do with a lot of corrupt files. Try using google with the symptoms as well (IE: Computer starts but no display, or nothing happens) and browse forums that Google lists. I ended up having to do something (for the life of me I can't remember) to get some sort of visual and then cleared my harddrive and reinstalled everything.

If you DO get a new video card, Oryx, be sure to use a software app that can monitor both CPU and GPU temperatures for you, if you aren't already. Nvidia has a free app, "system monitor", that can do it for you. It can put up a nice little HUD showing temps while you're inworld even, goes away completely once you exit it.

Below 70C you should be OK. See anything above that, may want to consider improving the ventilation in your PC.

the thing is it is stopping before the hard drive is initiated..the hard drive is like the last thing to initiate so if the system is coming to a halt or limbo before it is finished with the tests it is more than likely a hardware problem or something was changed in the bios..the only way drivers for a card would load before the hard drive would be from one of the other drives like an A drive or cd or dvd in the boot sequence..

if it was a driver problem it would finish the boot sequence..

Now it could be that it is not making good contact also and need to be pushed back in the slot..

Video card! I had exactly the same happen to me, and I bought a brand new system in a panic. Then when I started to cannibalise the old system I noticed that the video card wasn't seated, fixed that and it restarted just fine.

If you are dumb enough to use a Macbook Pro for SL like I am, keep an eye on how hot it's getting. I only use it because it's a work computer and I don't own a PC of my own. The IT guy who replaced the card said he had never seen a card just melt like that before. I didn't enlighten his as to the reason why. I guess none of the other employees are dumb or bold enough to use their work Mac to play SL.

No, they just don't share my work avoidance issues. I wait until the last minute and then crank out something mediocre. It is advertising after all.

Yup it was the video card. Poor old Nvidia 6100. Time to go to that CPU in the Sky. But yay! Computer's just fine, tho a bit dusty on the inside, and now I get to buy a new card!

You'll need to email him as well instructions on what to do when he finds out I have put a keylogger on the machine which sends my machine a logfile of his activity so I'll know when he tries to subvert them. The first thing I did was google how to circumvent the controls ( http://computerkid.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-to-bypass-vista-parental-controls.html ) and the best way to prevent it is to know that someone is trying, then to remove the opportunity.

Pep (Then his sister gets the new machine - and he gets to fight with his mother for the use of her slow old laptop.)

OMG! You still USE a 6100???

I feel like an odd-ball now using one of the high-end Nvidia cards.

Either that or I just have $$$ to burn on PC components :p

FYI: Go for the best video card you can!!! The newer GTX Nvidia series just frickin' RAWKS Second Life!!!

If you do, you'll see what I mean ;)
