So Art Laxness has now released a full perm version of his noob. He's also put out a few variants of the noob, and even a few extra heads for it. http://npirl.blogspot.com/2009/05/free-noobs-for-all-art-laxness-releases.htmlSo... will you replace the 'botted version with a legit version?

I got rid of mine and any given to me. I'm happy that I can get one legitimately.

Yeppers. I picked up a noob pack this afternoon, thanks!
I purchased a legitimate noob, but it's nice to have the legitimate full permissions one now.

I also deleted my freebie copied ones that had been given to me, so this is nice to hear.

One thing that occurred to me, reading the description... how did Art create the sculpt map and texture map for his n00b? By eye, or by using OGRE to extract the textures and meshes from a running instance of Second Life? I don't know, but the recursion is making my eyes cross!

Oh, I'm not deleting the copybotted ones, as I think they're an interesting bit of SL pop culture history. For whatever that's worth.

Got mine, though I had a little trouble at first locating it. the SLURL dumped me in the sea at the edge of the sim!

For those following the SLURL... Fly upward, then fly to the base of the beacon. wait for things to rez. The noobs are in a sphere on an Ionic Column capital, and the spkere has a noob head in it. Buy that for L$0 to get it.

I've used them for photo props, and modified with another freebie component as a dirty joke.

This is great news! I appreciate Art Laxness making free versions of his Noob sculpture available. I can think of several interesting uses for it at NCI.

I dropped an offline to Kim Anubis about the landing point - it dumped me there too.

The Philip Linden one is quite fun. I had to look twice the first time I saw it.

I actually found Art's analysis of of copyright more intresting than the noob (not that I won't go grab the freebie). there is some validity there although I disagree about the restructurablity or some business models (current system for things like drug development are expensive and intensive, although I think India had it right in this regard... recognize processes, not end results, or innovation suffers. because once a thing is done, it's often much easier to refine or find a different simpler method to achieve it)

I've met lots of legal noobs before, but they were not full perm.
Modify and transfer, sure.
But not copy. That's the tough one.

Hello All I made the noob by getting the polygon model of the noob into modelling software then eyeballing nurb surfaces around that. The textures were made from screen captures from multiple angles which were projected onto the nurbs. Does raise some interesting copyright issues. For instance could Linden Labs sue me for making a work directly derivative from theirs? In the context of me using it in a work of "fine art", under UK law, I'm OK. (Hey! I actually learnt something from my fine art degree) If we get to selling it for profit then it gets a whole lot more messy. This is part of why I'm beginning to suspect that the current model of patent and itellectual property may be holding the world back... Though maybe my views are like socialism. A beautiful idea but sadly naieve as regards human nature? Who knows? Have fun with the noobs

Thought it was something like that. I seriously doubt Linden Labs would be concerned with your creation of a derivative work like that. There's companies, though, that will want serious royalties for even things like a five second clip or still frame from a TV show. Be careful out there.
