Advertising pictures are made outside of SL on programs like PhotoShop or Gimp. Take a picture of your product, site or even avatar save to disk, open in a graphics or photo imaging program, apply copy and upload to SL like you would any texture, for much more info on this check out the texture forum for tips and how to dos.

Setting a store is done in one of two ways basically, either buy land, buy or make a store, set it up on the land. The other method is find a store on someones land and rent it from them, I'd suggest spending some time checking out sites, how many prims you get, costs etc. Also consider if other merchants in the area seem to be doing well (or badly) do they sell products that are relevant to yours, do you want a store next to competitors etc.

Hi Katnip - Read thru this thread: /327/ac/274749/1.html tons of advice on sales, adverts, set up- runs the gamut. Good luck.

You need land, and a store. You can rent both of these, which will save you a LOT of time.
As the other posters said, look around for a good deal. If you rent in a mall, find out what things the mall owner does to promote the stores there.

You need vendors...prims that give out your items in exchange for payment. There are freebie vendor scripts out there, check the Script Library here. If you're short on prims, you can buy those vendors that have multiple items in them and will cycle through their "catalog". But they are a pain for customers to use.

You need advertising. A logo, store signs, and product photos to put on your vendor displays.

And you need products. I STRONGLY recommend you make your own original stuff. Trying to sell stuff you bought in a "business in a box" is a route to the poorhouse. That stuff is all over the place already, and a lot of it is either ripped off, or is widely available for free.

I agree
that sales thread is extremely helpful, however it needs a different name

something like... how to start and promote a business

:)
