So I'm almost ready to set up my sound file/ gesture shop and I have dutifully searched for my answers through the usual sources but everything I've found assumes a basic knowledge of SL scripting, and the cutesy names given to things in SL. What's a "poofer" and "exploder" anyway?

I digress, sorry. What I primarily want is for costumers to be able to click through my sound samples via two forward and back arrows on the wall of the shop, since I'm starting with a small space, I need something prim light.

What script or scripts do I need? Under what "funny name" will I find a sound demo script? Also does anyone know of an easy to understand shop setup demo or thread?

As always,

Thank you. :)

Vendor scripts.

Might be freebie vendors someone can give you. I dunno.

Here is a big thread about sales and marketing. Various products for sales are discussed so quite posibly u might find what u r looking for there. I don't use vendors so I cannot offer a recommendation -

/327/ac/274749/1.html

A poofer is a prim that emits particles in various shapes and/or images. Images are commonly refered to as textures. Not familiar with exploder but there is a thing called a 'spolder that folks pay money to and it randomly pays out its winnings.

Search XStreet.com for vendors also - there might be freebies to be had.

Good luck.

Perhaps you should note that when people talk about "vendors" here they are not talking about the people or organisations that sell stuff, which is the real world definition of "vendor"; I am still not quite sure what a "vendor" means in sl, but I have a feeling that it is some sort of mechanism whereby a selection of products are offered, from which you click on a picture of something, it asks for money from you and then (usually) delivers the product automatically into your inventory, maybe immediately, maybe after some time.

Pep (It approximates to what we would call a virtual "vending machine" on this side of the Atlantic.)

I agree. Vendors remind me of evenings in Singapore or Mumbai - street vendors. It all sounds very commercial.

Here's a cheap one - search XStreet for "vendors"

Thanks everyone,

From what Pep said, a "vendor" is not what I'm looking for specifically.

Amaranthim,

Thanks for the thread reference I'll start digging through it.

Now given the function the term "poofer" makes some sense. No wonder I couldn't remember "spolder" the name tells you nothing about it's function. It's a slot machine, why not call it a "slotter" or something equally descriptive?

Another pet peeve I have are sellers that expect you to buy without providing any specific information on the product. I should always be able to at least read the note card before I buy something. The better dealers do this or provide a demo.

If anyone knows how to script sound samples in SL I have some scripting knowledge so its OK to use programming lingo with me. ;)

It's actually called a 'sploder' ('spolder' is a common typo for it). The word is a shortened version of 'exploder' (think of the slang terms 'asplode' and 'splodey' to mean the same as 'explode' and 'explosive') and it's usually some form of single device such as a spinning ball that people at dances and parties pay into.

The payments form the jackpot, with the club owner often putting in a large amount to begin with. Each time someone pays in, the "sploder will pay out in xx seconds" time increases, until no more people pay in. Then the countdown begins, and at the end of it the sploder pays out randomly to those that paid into it. One person usually gets a big payout, then other payouts are smaller.

I believe (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that technically, sploders are against ToS, since the payouts are pure chance (gambling in SL is only permitted if there is an element of skill involved, however small).

To answer the vendors question, there are several packs of free vendors in the freebie walls at all NCI (New Citizens Inc) campuses and infonodes. Try looking there.

I don't think the anti-gambling rules specifically say that even a tiny amount of skill qualifies. The anti-gambling rule is largely motivated by the US Unlawful Internet Gambling Act. For practical purposes, the act, which relies on state laws, requires more than a small amount of skill for something to qualify.

More likely, the question of whether a given device is permitted depends on how skilled you are at bamboozling the particular randomly chosen Linden who has to make the decision.

Start by looking at llPlaySound. I haven't scripted sounds, but it looks easy enough.

?

Those things on the walls of stores that people can click the arrow, turn the page and pay. Isn't that what you asked for in your first post here?

(He was right - those are what is called 'vendors.')

You might try going inworld to stores that sell sounds and gestures. Right click on what they are using, choose More, then Inspect - Look up the Creator's Profile- hopefully they put their store in their picks.
