PNG uses lossless compression. The quality is exactly the same as BMP.

bmp's are not compressed..the loss you would get you wouldn't notice untill you went bigger than the resolution..
5 megs to 1 meg they are nice but not lossless..they hold quality better than any other compression..and are great for the transparency ease..

yes but you still have to tinker around with the format with each pic you take :( at least I did with the bmp format (which I use, incidently, 'cos I like to print some of my sl stuff...and I still find bmps give the best print)

I checked again, and it appears that Viktoria is right, snapshot to disk should remember the last setting you used in take snapshot. At least in the current RC.

I guess I didn't realize that, since I've not used BMP since PNG became available.

on the net they are the best thing since sliced bread..png's are great..they are really just a gif file on steroids lol
gif files can handle up to 256 colors and pngs can go i believe up to 16 million colors..so your eye is not gonna catch any loss..
they both deflate but gif loses some quality because of the lack it saves..

really if TIFF files and Raw files were more versatile i wouldn't even bother with BMP's myself

the only bad thing i have found with PNG is that it still isn't fully supported by some browsers yet.
mainly when you deal with transparency..it will leave gray areas where the transparency is..

but if i am emailing someone pictures or working on a website and want more than 256 colors..i'm gonna use a png file for sure..
for things in sl i think they are perfect really..
your eye will never pick up the difference..
the lossless compression just means when you deflate it it's all still there..
but nothing on the net delivers better than a png..i can't wait for it to be fully supported..
i believe it is even capable of 48 bit on the save..but at 24 it's pretty flawless..
i think working with the alpha channels and targa you can only save at 24 lol
bleh .now i have to test this lol

The only thing BMP will do that TIFF and PNG won't is eat up storage space like mad.

Saving to PNG works fine

If you have it set to PNG, it doesn't do that weirdness. <- found accidentally.

I was going to post in the Textures forum but ran into this post which I believe may have already answered my question.

I take a lot of snapshots to disk and after sizing them, upload and distribute them to friends as textures (snapshots) or to use in their profiles or picks. My objective is to end up with the best quality (resolution?) possible for the end product. It appears upon reading this post that BMP is the format to use. Am I correct in my understanding?

Any suggestions in getting the best quality possible would be appreciated. I do believe I have the whole sizing thing down pat, so that is not an issue.

I have noted a number of settings under Debug starting with Snapshot..... Perhaps these or other settings would result in a better quality.

Thanking you in advance.

Yes, PNG is lossless.
