From: Fenix Eldritch I recall reading through a newbie guide LL had put out some time before I joined... There was a section that commented on this. Nothing big, mind you, just a small paragraph trying to explain how people were encouraged not to give their avatars AOL-ish names.
Heh, they also talked about the prim tax. That made me very reluctant to rez anything for the first couple of days before I realized it had long since been abolished. The Official Guide to Second Life talks about the importance of choosing a name, as well. The problem with it is that anyone who forks over the $20+ US for the book is probably already a player anyway. Too late for most. There should be a pop up that comes up before creating your username. I think that would eliminate much of this.

The LL name system worked perfectly well when the names were rotated frequently - and since LL were using the real names of people who signed up to draw the LL names from (a few weeks later) it wasn't even much effort.
Then they broke the system in January by freezing the names until there were 150,000 Allens. Well, there are not 150,000 sensible first names, so of course you will get Pat1978 etc.
I even saw one person who had a telephone number as a name (complete with international dialing code).

From: Bradley Bracken Several people have stated this in other forums also. I don't understand it. I think some of them are very creative and very funny. Some of course aren't. I wouldn't lump them all into one barrel. Peoples names are not meant to be funny or cute. What's the purpose to have stupid names with numbers and slashes and long sentences? To try to come off as being creative, funny or clever? It gives the complete opposite affect. I don't know about others but I'm not easily amused by these type of dumb names. If anything it sort of shows the person as being somewhat of an idiot walking around with names like this. I saw a nice looking female with a beautiful gown, swept back hair and looking very lovely for a night out but with a name like thedevilmay care. Kinda of stupid don't you think? And you see others with much, much worse. In on-line games where to send a message to someone you had to write out the persons name in a "/tell" it's kind of ridiculous to have to constantly spell out names with all kinds of different letterings, numbers and signs. At times having to look several times to make sure you got all the letters right. Or not being able to send a message because you couldn't spell it correctly due to the many different letterings. I don't see anything creatively clever about this.

I don't see anything creatively clever about this. Well seeing every name under 8 letters has been used in the 10million names previously what chance have we got of easy to type names?

The problem for me is knowing how to address the people with sentence or numberered names.
When HaveANiceCupOf Tea or SammyD1172 comes into my shop, and I have never met them before, do I say 'Hello HaveANiceCupOf' or 'Hi SammyD1172' which sounds rather daft??
Yet it is rude to nickname or abbreviate the name of someone you've never met, so I can't call them Sammy or HT??

I don't see anything creatively clever about this. The main reason for many MMORPG-players to create avatar names with multiple numbers and special characters, underscore and various combinations which ultimately makes it impossible for others to remember and re-type it correctly without a screenshot (and sometimes very difficult even then), is simply because they are griefers, and they do this not to get caught. Griefers in SL picked this habit up as well, which was only to be expected. Or griefer-wannabe's; most SL griefers make themselves look utterly ridiculous and they are mostly harmless, unlike in most MMO-games, where they take full advantage of the limitations in such games. At least that is my experience with griefers in many MMO(RPG) games. Tarantino would love griefers. They have no taste, they are cheap and they love attention. Just like him and his movies.

From: JessyAnne Theas Maybe they couldn't wait the time it takes to find an available name because they were in a rush to get to that free sex place they heard so much about... Damn! .... I've been rumbled

From: Kiboe Munro yea, i was at help island, just to welcome new people, i saw one idiot askign for money, now i have just cashed otu the other day so i am broke right now, he said "YOU HAVE PAYMENT INFO, GIVE ME CASH, YOUR A PREMIUM MEMBER, GIVE ME CASH!" payment info means you have credit card info on file, not that you have a premium account, if you had a premium accoutn it would say "premium membership" GOD, i hate people > If you WERE a premium member would you have given them any cash anyway? I know I wouldn't have, in fact, if pick-pocketing were possible in SL I would have taken what little money he may have had just for using all-caps =P

From: Bradley Bracken That's what I did. On most websites my login name is Bradley310 (My name plus my area code). When I logged into SL I really didn't have an understanding that it was going to be a vastly different situation. Even if I did understand I don't think it really would have mattered to me because I was just logging in out of curiosity and had no intention of staying. In a nut shell. I didn't know whether I was going to stay a day, a week, whatever. No idea what I was letting myself in for. Sooo ... I picked the least obnoxious second name at the time and slapped my seven-year-old Starship Titanic forum name on the front. I had been Bilbo for the first few months back then, but my login got borked so as a joke stuck 99 on. I met Morgaine on that forum and though SST has died, Morgaine and Bilbo99 are still an item, so much so, she's moved to within a short drive and we meet in SL when we don't IRL. So ... Bilbo99 I remain ohh kayyyy?
