I assume that the Classifieds category is gone from the All search because the search application they are using is designed to rank on relevancy, and not on a single criteria, such as how much was paid. In other words, they can't make it fair. Classifieds are pay-for-placement ads, and they can't do it with the Google application.

They said they were working on making classifieds work, but that it would be done over the coming months but I don't recall them saying classifieds would be pulled like this from search all, adds even less value to a classified now really. Unless you're paying crazy money they are becoming more and more irrelevant.

I agree that the only fair way to rank classifieds is by price though.

They did say it recently - that Classifieds would be pulled and the only appearance of them would be in the right column. It must have been in the blog, or it could have been a posting here by Jeska, but I do remember it being said.

James Linden also posted about this on page 5 of Cristalle's "Would you pay more than 50L" thread, and asked for our opinions about it.

Yes, and the decision to yank classifieds out of all was made afterward, within a week or two.

Jeska has since confirmed that in the same thread.

To save you a LOT of time, note that the information about how to optimize for search (as opposed to just lots of complaining) starts on page 17, with Phil Deakins' post.

it only goes to page 8 for me, but i know the thread you are talking about.

the part i never understood was when Phil said:

I mean that creating a slew of new alts and having your place in their Picks, won't work, because they won't be coutned as links. And we're not talking about traffic. Forget alts and bots altogether - you need links, links, and more links.

this seems to be key, but i don't get his meaning about "links". :o

That was a reply to Cristalle, who seemed to think that I was suggesting creating a ton of alts and adding the place to their picks, but I wasn't. Picks are links. Every av has an html page with its picks listed in it. And each pick's title links to the html page of the place that it is a Pick of. That's how picks are links.

Hm, I understand what you are saying Phil, but I don't understand why picks from alts don't count as links. Is it because of the same IP-address or something? Or online-status?

I've tried and tried to get more than one alt counting, but I failed. There is some restriction in play, but I don't know what it is. It could be to do with IPs. I have alts that were created on different IPs - even on different C, B and A blocks. When an alt is not logged in, it doesn't have a 'current' IP. All it can have is its creation IP, or the last used IP, or both.

Whatever the restriction is, it causes the av to not have an html page, and so its picks can't count.

One thing that I *think* may help - at least it seemed to in my case - is add the html link to your store to your website, should you have one. Have friends? Ask them to link as well.
