I've heard a lot of complaining about Vista but I have yet to find a significant problem? Could people please point out why they dislike Vista so much?

1. It needs more resources for equal performance: more RAM, better video card.

2. There are too many pieces of hardware with no Vista drivers. If you upgrade an old machine, you might discover that your printer, scanner, web camera, sound card, etc. stop working, and that the manufacturer has no plans for Vista support, ever.

3. Video drivers for Vista have been problematic; a number of video cards that work fine for SL under XP don't under Vista, because the OpenGL support in the Vista drivers isn't up to par yet. (For the first three months after the Vista release, you couldn't run Second Life AT ALL, because neither NVidia nor ATI had any OpenGL drivers.)

4. Voice users can't direct the voice I/O to any sound device other than the default one. I know a guy who likes to wear a headset for voice but send the music to his speakers; can't do it under Vista.

5. Network performance of Vista goes to hell when you are also streaming audio or video. (Yes, this is a documented problem caused by an attempt to make sure that the media doesn't stutter.) It's been fixed in Vista SP1, still in beta.

6. For SL, Vista doesn't have any advantages, only disadvantages. So why bother?

My partner has been running SL on Vista for 7 or 8 months and has had no problems whatsoever. Other than typical SL problems, of course.

The problems listed by Shirley are problems one is likely to encounter if they have a computer that is 2 + years old and they install Vista. The question is, why would they?

If you're going for Vista, get a new machine. If you encounter problems, it probably has more to do with learning the idiosyncrasies/changes of Vista than Vista not working.

Umm many games and business software only 5 years old or so that used to run on XP and 98 doesn't run on Vista andits too new for some stuff to work on it and still full of bugs, in 12 months it might be worth getting. It's retrocompatibility sucks

I'm not sure those complaining about Vista actually use it. I have Vista, and it runs like a charm. And it runs my older software too -- it has a compatibility setting for older software. Oh, and I stream audio, video no problem, have compatible drivers for all my hardware -- on three different machines (one is an upgraded OS too).

I have vista on my new machine and the only thing that drives me absolutely batty is it borking up software installs by is asking for permission from and administrator account even though you are logged in to an administrator account. :P

I found a couple of workarounds but I simply should not have to.

I know that it is possible to disable this security feature but it is not recommended by Microsoft since it is enabled to restrict hackers, that's why they don't make it easy to learn how.

I'm not exactly sure how it is done but Help and Support should have it for you.

Actually thats one of the workarounds. Turn it off. Install the software. TUrn it back on.

In Control Panels switch to classic view (I am not sure its visible in the new one but it should be).

In User Account

Turn User Account Control on or off.

A better solution for those not comfy with turning off the security only works on SOME software. Right click the installer and pick Install as administrator.

ALL this figured out after 5.5 hours trying to install WoW.

Vista Ultimate 32bit
High spec PC
No problems at all (other than those you always get with SL, regardless of OS)
Faster response times than XP in every respect, more attractive and higher frame rate in SL than I had on XP.
Only downside to Vista over XP imo, as already mentioned, is the annoying permissions thing.
No regrets *upgrading* my PC to Vista from XP :)

Probably better to ask what is right with it..

.. would result in a much shorter list. :P

Yes, I support Vista with business users. It could suck-start an F-22 with all the issues it has.

I use Vista on a machine barely 6 months old. I have never had ANY issues due to the OS. I can stream music and videos perfectly.

Gotta agree about the administrator permission pop up though, that does get annoying at times.

I crash about once per hour since moving to Vista; I rarely crashed on xp. I have no regrets upgrading overall and I have had no problems with running anything else on it, but for me, Vista and SL are not a happy couple.

Wish you were right Bradley...
A few months ago I bought a laptop for my gf with exactly the same specs as mine: same chipset, same embedded crappy graphic adapter, same processor, same memory, same HD :-)

Well I am running XP, she had preinstalled Vista of course. My fps is generally around 15, she did not get above 3 fps!! No matter how i tried to tune the damn thing, not even by using the latest drivers from intel instead of the laptop producer. XP was not supported on the machine though.

Bought an XP cd, downloaded all the neccesary drivers straight at the hardware manufacturers (again, not the laptop producer), and installed XP on her machine. Running smooth!

Vista itself is not bad I guess, but many drivers just are not good enough. The problem lies with the manufacturers of the drivers of course, not with Vista itself, but the result is the same. Be very sure that the drivers for your hardware are okay, then you wont have any problem I guess :-)

Greetings, Marcel

Occasionally I get hooked up to an amazing new quad-core comp with Vista. SL works absolutely superbly on it. OK, occasional crashes, but virtually no lag, even at busy places with draw distance set at 256m!

I have to say things aren't quite as good with the latest WindLight update but it's still amazing. I write this on 'Old Laggy', though, through which I usually hook up!

the only complaint i have with my Vista (had it since Feb '07) is how slow it opens/closes programs (not just SL), and how long it takes to get the task manager to pop up.

Vista with Sl has been no problems for me. If you use your computer the way Microsoft wants you to use it, you will not have any problems. If you want to set up Vista to mimic your current XP work flow, you will detest Visa.

I don't know about other businesses but where I work we just went through our second full evaluation of Vista (among other OS options) and for our environment, there is NO reason to migrate to Vista, much less any reason significant enough to warrent the cost. We are, however, running a pilot on Linux.

That said, if you have Vista, great. Keep it. There are a few modest improvements over XP -- like in Spider Solitaire you can now "un-do" past the previous deal; it will pick the cards back up. But I would not go spend the money to upgrade to Vista for an XP machine.

Well that's interesting because my laptop runs *better* with Vista.

It overheats with the XP intel drivers, and is fine with Vista. Frame rates are the same in both cases.
