LL Viewer is 'Crashtastic'?

I was just reading a blog post about a new viewer being released (I don't want to call anyone out here, this post isn't about any particular blog or viewer). It was claiming that this new viewer might 'threaten Linden Lab's control this corner of the metaverse'. One of the things the article mentioned is how crashtastic(what a fun word! :) ) the LL viewer is.

Now, this isn't the first time I've heard this. It seems in every viewer discussion it comes up how unstable the LL viewer is; particularly in the posts of 3rd party viewer maintainers. I have to say that, in my experience, this is just not the case. I have six viewers installed on my machine, and I can't think of a single 'viewer crash' I've experienced in 14 months in SL. That includes regular use of the official viewer, and the RC viewer(I use this 90% of the time).

Is my experience unusual? Do most of the people on the grid crash so much using the LL viewer that it deserves to be called 'crashtastic'?

I have to use that word... I was away from SL for a couple of months and now when I return I download the release and every 20 minutes it crashes... It's getting very anoying

I don't have good luck with the initial first handful of LL RC viewers. I'll give them a try but I don't switch to using them full time until round 6-7 usually. The non-RC LL viewer is pretty stable for me.

Don't have any 3rd-party viewers.

I dabbled with various other viewers over the past three years. I never found any significant advantage for me.

So, my experience is like yours. The LL viewers are good enough for me.

When I first started in SL, I crashed constantly. 3-4 times an hour? Eventually I just left because it was too ridiculous. I had the bare minimum set-up, though, and I think the technical requirements outstripped me around the time I quit.

I upgraded my machine in December, and it had been smooth sailing for the past 5 months. Since about mid-May I've been experiencing more crashes. I wouldn't call it crashtastic, but I'd say I go down once every 4-5 sessions. It often feels like it's *about to* crash though, I get a lot of hangs and lag.

RC 1.23 will probably not make it to 6 or 7. It is at 3 now, and might not see 4.

Viewer crashes have declined a whole lot for me in the past year. Since 1.20 it's been pretty stable. The alternate viewers I've used crash just as often as the official viewer in the same situations.

Network problems can knock me off sometimes, but it's been a long long time since a production LL viewer has actually crashed on me. That blog isn't so much of an information resource as it's something to read for the lulz, kind of like the Weekly World News.

This might have a lot to do with it. My PC specs are well above what LL recommends.

Back when I started, the 3rd party viewers were much more stable in my mind.

I have been using the current RC for quite a while now and before that was using the official release most of the time. On my desktop, which really is a decent computer, I will crash a lot if I am camming around lots. I do not experience the same thing on my new laptop - SL pretty much never crashes there.

It better see at least a rev 4 or 5. Version 1.23 RC3 still has some serious problems with parts of the avatar mesh becoming invisible!

I'll admit though, overall it is far more stable at this stage than most RC's have been so early on.

I do use a third party but in all honesty - crashed of any kind with the LL's or others have been few and far between for years. When I first came in-world I could not log on with out crashing- added memory- end of problems. My vid card wd be great to improve but since 99% of my sl time is on a laptop- that's not an option. So- i can't say i crash anymore or any less regardless of what viewer i am using.

Wasn't the whole ooh-hah about the Nicholaz Viewer precisely because it fixed so many of the memory leaks (which lead to crashes) in the SL Viewer?

Supposedly, but back when that was the fad, it crashed plenty for me too.

I've been on 1.22 (with two over configured machines, one desktop and the other laptop) and I only crash when I'm having network problems. I will start walking or flying and it won't stop, the keyboard is ignored and after a minute or so it crashes and I have to log back in. This only happens on a slow wifi connection, and even then only once a week or so.

Then maybe I'll have to start checking out the 3rd-party viewers...

I just logged in and guess what, it crashed as described!

Pet peeve: we need to discriminate between "crash" and "disconnect". I disconnect constantly. I can hardly ever stay online for more than an hour or so without it happening. This isn't a crash, it's a loss of connection to the server. The most likely cause is network problems, and since I'm a Comcast customer I think it's them. I hear that lots of Comcast customers have the same issue. You know it's a disconnect when you can no longer move, keyboard input is ignored, eventually the mini-map goes red, and you get the "you have been logged out" message. The viewer window is still visible and you can quit normally.

A crash, on the other hand, is when the software itself suddenly fails. This is usually due to an error in the software code. Often you get an error message from the operating system when it happens. On Windows, the viewer disappears from the task bar, and on Macs, it disappears from the dock.

I almost never have a crash, I can't remember the last time it happened. But I disconnect every single day, repeatedly, and it's annoying as hell.

Mine are crashes. If I am camming around a lot then eventually I will go to do something and get an hourglass and the top of the windows shows "not responding" and then the viewer shuts down and I get the little box telling me I crashed and asking if I want to send the crash report.

Mine are crashes, too. I get the Mac "hey you crashed, wanna report it?" message.

But I do also get the hanging that you described, which--of course!--is probably due to network issues. I moved a few months ago and the DSL at my new place (same service provider, same package) is terrible compared to the last. I always think about about to crash, but I rarely do.

Same here. I don't crash much at all, but the disconnects.. omg. Figuring out after 5 minutes of chatting that your bandwidth usage is zero, you can't move, and everyone is stuck in the same animation but you never noticed is definately annoying. Has been getting a little worse for me in the last week or so.

Viewer 1.19.1.x and 1.20.x could be aptly described as "crashtastic". Since v1.21.x, however, the crashes have become few and far between for me - at least until v1.22RC7 and higher were released. Even then, the only time I crash is when I'm trying on a bunch of clothes. For some reason, going through my clothes collection is guaranteed to crash my viewer after about 20 minutes or so of doing this - certainly suggestive of memory leaks where interaction with the asset servers is concerned.

my 1.20 ran 10-14 hrs at a time nonstop with no problem. the forced update a week or so ago to 1.22 has me crashing now 12-14 times a day. If 1.23 is progressively worse than 1.22 which was worse than 1.20 etc etc. 1.23 may be totally unusable an i will finaly have to give up sl altogether.
