Acceptable as your opinion, as expert as it may be. But not as an absolute truth.

that's true

well so far, being a second life artist, the replies in this thread are really disappointing.

Thanks for those name suggestions. I rarely see SL scultpures that are more than just a 3d versions of computer eye candy - like a light show or moving 3d spirograph designs. I'm expecting the names on the list to provide something a little deeper then. If not - that's ok too. I like eye candy.

Of course in your post you were not refering to artists or (gasp!) illustrators who use SL as a sort of 3D web page to display their RL works. I am happy to explore them and I ususally donate to the galleries for the entertainement and relaxation value they have provided me.

I am also involved in the RL art world and I know where Dekka is coming from. I have a real love/hate relationship with the art world because on the one hand it can be very elitist but on the other it allows for work that is not necessarily pretty, decorative or at all the sort of thing you'd want on your wall at home, if it asks interesting questions, presents a new way of looking at something or explores a medium (any medium) in a new way.

There is no definition of what art is, even among RL artists. They've been arguing about it for centuries and will probably continue doing so for centuries to come. Out of those arguments interesting things can emerge.

None of this is to discredit what Lexxi or anybody else does, but I don't think it's all the same thing or that it can or should be judged by the same criteria. It's a shame we don't have more words than just "art" to describe this vast range of creative output.

I do still think that there is a danger that something is lost when a canvas (never entirely flat) is uploaded as a texture and so I tend to view these types of work as reproductions rather than originals.

Yep, I dislike the word 'art'. It's such a loaded and pretentious word.

I just make "stuff". People can call it whatever they like.

I had posted this a while ago on a blog, I think it fits this discussion well too.

My father, god bless him, had no interest in art and trying to explain to him about modern art was like trying to convince him I was an alien from another planet, which would have been easier. I took him to a small gallery once that was showing a traveling show, exhibiting some of the best work that didn’t usually get shown outside of London. We spent sometime there, me explaining about the pieces, why they existed and getting him to react to them and explaining that his reaction was part of the processed. Eventually he said “oh I see, I understand that”, so 15 minutes later we’re outside and I say “so you understand better now then?” and he replied “I think so, but it’s a load of crap really, isn’t it?”

Quite an interesting book on this subject. Dali & I: The Surreal Story by Stan Lauryssens. Well, specifically on being an art dealer specializing in Dali.

I was told post-modern was an architectural style, but the guy who told me that was also claiming that cyberpunk wasn't science fiction... so I'm not sure I believe him.

Art is a big fish.

Ah. Um. Was art the fish I ate last night? The fish was large-ish. Said his name was Arthur, though.

Your father is correct. Modern art is a load of crap (sometimes literally; actually I thought it was post-modern now, did we go back to modern?).

I think the whole problem with "art" and discussions like this is the fact that art is subjective. Just of the top of my head I can't think of many things that are more subjective than art.

There's an old saying about music, "There is no such thing as good or bad music, only music you like and music you don't like."

The same thing applies to art. If I see something and I like it, that's all there is to it. If it meets someone's criteria as "art" has no bearing on my enjoyment and appreciation for it.

hehe probably not. Sadly, I have it on good authority from Korean friends that it doesn't mean that at all.

One of the finest treatises on modern art I have encountered is by humorist Dave Barry. In an essay he tells of finding an art exhibition featuring an old worn out chair displayed as art and for sale at $20,000.00 or thereabouts. It's a riotous essay full of perfect comedic timing, but he sums up by saying something like:

"I admit I am a complete imbecile when it comes to art.

So YOU buy the chair."

It also contains ilea, a plural of the noun for the small intestine.

If you want to see excellant SL art look up Dancoyote Antonelli. His art is wonderful and very SL relevent. He does charge RL prices. Some other really great artists are in those exhibits too, just off the top of my head I can't think of names.

I love the SL ballet.

Yes, I buy art in SL. Original art imported in or created for SL from the creator. I seldom will buy just a painting someone has brought in because I don't want to infringe on copyright. Only if I am very sure it is not a copyrighted piece will I maybe buy it or upload it myself.
