Does this have anything to do with Brent Linden's response in https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/land/dpw/blog/2009/04/29/moles-wanted#comments

Oh.. That could be - LL has said that they have lots of people that work remotely. That'd be a shame if they lost somebody like Prospero over some stupid legal (probably tax-related) BS like that..

Sorry sweetie, but you don't do rolling restarts remotely :). Well, or at least that's what I'd consider good practice...

But they've got colos in 3 different states - California, Texas and Arizona. It's almost 2000 miles from San Francisco to Dallas..

edit: and he's in one of the legal states anyway..

You sure can do restarts remotely. The difference is that you don't do them autonomously, meaning that there are humans around at the machines to unbork them in case something goes horribly wrong.

That said, it is a rare occasion that something goes horribly wrong. As long as you can access the machine and restart the software components from remote, you're fine.

They are also adding servers at NAP here in Northern Virginia and as of last month were shopping for more in the UK.

Prospero admitted something went wrong. We all can only guess but given that he is an honest outspoken person who may have had some friction with someone in LL earlier, that may have been a nice found reason to kick him out. But hell yeah....just a guess.

It may have just burnt him out.
It's why I stopped being a forum mod, I just couldn't do the work anymore. Having heated discussion with customers really takes the energy out of you. And LL (from my perspective as a moderator) isn't very supportive.

Bob - Blog?

Someone gave me the URL for Prospero's Blog, but I've lost it again. Does anyone remember it?

It couldn't have been connected to the Rolling Restart, but still waters run deep.

Bugger, he was pretty cool to chat with, but on to better things I hope, this place is a bit of a madhouse for those in the pressure seats. Moreso as it gets bigger and bigger.
Maybe he did get kicked du to an error he made, but he's always admitted his mistakes and really did it cause that much trouble, it's not like he crashed SL servers for a day ot anything, it's only a game, if you are going to go under if SL is offline for 24 hours then your business model is flawed and risky at best.

Read his latest blog entry, he is unemployed with no prospects. I am sure something will pop up but it shows that this was either a case of "I am sick of this place" or "GTFO". In a normal economy and year I could see someone stating the former, I have done it myself in the past. It has to be a very, very bad environment for someone to chuck it all and take their chances in the job market right now.

Check the comments - he's rknop... Apparently, it wasn't voluntary.

Rainbow Colored Cone
05-25-2009 18:44
There's now a rainbow colored cone, that refers people to this forum, and to rknop's blog. Touch the one labeled, "Do not touch."

I'm guessing, he exploded an expletive at a protected ethnic, and simply assumed he'd be fired. The person he yelled at likely feels worst of all.
