From: Tegg Bode I haven't clicked on any for a long time, but most of the ones I clicked on 12 months ago were dead links, non existantant companies or big names used without the companies permission, a few RL companies I emailed about the problem didn't seem to care of course. much like email spam, for every 100,000 that get deleted unread, if just one person clicks the link one time, they think it's "worth it". Do NOT click the adfarms...EV-VAR! Curiosity may kill cats, but it breeds advertisers.

Yeah but the fact they weren't reall advertising means I suppose they are not really advertising or they are just farming for clicks to look more importan perhaps to customers.

Just one buyer of an extortion plot can foot the bill for a large, large number of plots with big price tags. And this asymmetry applies to tier, too: How much tier do they pay to LL? Well, let's do the math: just a single full-sim tier, with group bonus, is 4512 microparcels of 16sq.m. each. The revenue stream from the entire in-world "advertising" industry isn't worth a single Linden's loaded labor rate for just one day a month.

Tough to say what purpose it serves or what they get out of it. Prolly a whole lotta nuffin. But clickthrus are the currency the rest of the intertoobs runs on. If an adfarmer can say he generated X clickthrus for a previous client, he can sell that metric to other prospective clients. Even if the first client never made a single penny from it.

Hmm worst thing is if LL don't manage adfarming some way and they drop tier it's going to get to be a real ugly world real quick.

I think one of the problems is that SL was created with some Randian, objectivist capitalistic ideal. "If everybody are free to do anything, and nobody and nothing stands in their way, something beautiful will emerge". (-Anybody played Bioshock?) But it grew beyond the few idealists, and for some the philosophy changed to, “It is my right to screw others over; if they don’t like it, it’s just because they are just not good enough at screwing others over themselves”. The problem with any idealistic way to organize a society is that it only takes a few to ruin it for the many.
SL is, bluntly speaking, dragging along the legacy of a failed social experiment, and the Lindens are in the unenviable position of trying to make the best of that, balancing between preserving the imaginative world (as well as some legal promises), and trying to guide the platform in a direction where it is less vulnerable to disruption by a few, both legally and socially.
I think it is trying to find this balance which has LL appear sluggish when it comes to "cleaning up the obvious problems", rather than some conspiracy to squeeze money out of disgruntled users. They haven’t exactly hit the target yet, with, say, something like Bay City functioning more as a showcase for what must be addressed than for a solution, and the current cleaner-than-G-rating of the birthday event being totally over the top, but they *are* stepping more and more into the "social" aspect of SL, for better of for worse.

From: Hope Zinner I hear and read a lot about the clueless Lindens. They don't understand the problems that the residents have to deal with and how destructive, harmful or financially draining these issues can be for us. At best I hear that they just don't care. I have been thinking a lot about these issues over the past two years that I have been inworld: lack of zoning and building standards within the sims, adfarms and adcutters, copybot and texture theft, unethical landlords, real estate extortion, griefing at newbie hangouts, bugs in the building tools, inventory loss, crashes and glitches in the viewer, Over 99% of the people will never read more than 8 lines of an email, post or news artical unless it pertains directly to them. Above is all most people will read. I'm one of them.

From: Marcel Flatley Ceka en Zaphod, thanks When one follows the latest technology trends, it is very clear that the technique Second Life is based on, is going to rock in the future. It will not be the next internet, but a very important part of the way we will communicate. Maybe I suggested in my writing that LL does not care at all about the current virtual world and its inhabitants, but that is not exactly my point. Probably they do care, but it is very important to understand the focus they have. Now we cannot be sure without them telling us, but in my opinion, that focus lies on further developing the current technique for the future. Even when they care about the current userbase, we are not their priority. We are , however, part of the development of a brand new technique that will play an important role in the future. And that is great on its own When taking this into consideration, it is easy to understand what are their biggest worries. Sex did make the Word Wide Web what it is today, so it is important to have the sex industry involved. When publicity focusses on extremes like childsex, it might chase serious business opportunities away though. Because of that, I see them sooner put more and more restrictions on the sexual content, as zoning mainland for example. The latter does have no value at all for their commercial value in the future. Biggest lesson to lean: We are not as impotrant as we think we are. our views on the future are so close it's scarey lol i was talking about something similar just the other day in a thread around here somewhere.. the last line of your post is as true as it gets.. there are bigger plans in the mix.. i really think they want to become that household tool that is used as much as the phone the tv and internet.. with positive advertising and probably a more watered down version it's very possible.. i feel we are going to see some major changes big time in the next two years..it probably won't even take them that long really..

There is no "The Lindens" There are a few officers and employees of Linden Lab who call the shots. They hire and fire. These few people set the norms for everyone else in the company. Then there are the majority of the employees, who deal day-to-day with maintaining and supporting SL. It could be that there are individual LL employees who are itching to zap those who clearly disrupt SL for others. They can't act without a mandate. It could be that there are individual LL employees who are "clueless", who simply have no maturity, no vision and no empathy for others. What is lacking it the ability or confidence of the management to lead, educate and motivate this varied collection of personalities into the management of a world that is less restrictive than the real world but where consistent value calls have to be made and stood over. It's not a conspiracy. It's an inability to deal with the requirements of a very tall order.
