I stuffed up a land transaction - is there anything I can do?

So here's the (rather embarassing) story:
I own a nice plot of land with a lovely view, and am close to my maximum land allowance for the tier I'm on. The plot next door comes up for sale, and I get all enthused, but it's a bit too large for me to purchase while remaining on the same tier level. What to do? In what I fondly imagine is a moment of Extreme Cleverness, I form a group consisting of myself and my two alts, then deed my land to the group. The 10% extra tier allowance I get from that *almost* lets me purchase the plot next door, but not quite. So I separate off a small chunk of land from a corner of my plot and set it to sale and a dead-cheap price to encourage quick sale, in order to allow me to buy the next-door block without having to tier up.

Sure enough, the cheap plot sells quickly. "Yippee!" sez I, then with alacrity buys the plot next door. W00t! I now own the land I really wanted. Except..... (who can see this coming?) ... it turns out that I have been moved up into the higher tier anyway. I (or my group) didn't own more than the maximum amount of land for that tier at any point - but I didn't know that I had to remove my TIER CONTRIBUTION from the group for the land that I sold before purchasing the new plot. So all my clever schemes to sell off the little plot cheap to avoid the hit of paying extra tier this month have all come to nothing. I have sold my land cheaply, AND am STILL paying the higher tier this month. *sob*

Now, I know that this is a result of my own ignorance of how the land-ownership-by-groups thing works, but still... it's surely clear on my account record that I did not in fact own both of those plots at the same time. Is there any point in putting in a support ticket and asking the LL if they might out of the goodness of their hearts not charge me the extra tier this month since it's there as a result of an error that I corrected five minutes later?

Is there anything I can do about this?

And just to put the icing on the cake of this whole sad Learning Experience, I also discovered today that if one sells land owned by a group, one doesn't get the money for it straight away. So one has to purchase more L$ to cover the amount of money one thought one would have for purchasing the new block of land. *sigh* I assume the group money will disburse to me eventually? And out of interest, since I'm owner of the group and the only member with "Pay group liabilities and receive group dividends" checked, why is it that the group L$ box shows that my share of the group funds is only a third of the total received for the land? Will I get all of it when the dividends are finally paid?

*sigh* I thought I had a reasonable clue what I was doing with all this, having read up on the subject beforehand; but still I got all confused and made a hash of it. Land is hard. Lets go shopping. (Well, I would but now I'm broke...)

in the future, donate ALL your tier to the group then go to the parcel you want to buy and 'buy for group'.

File a suppport ticket. I know of an avatar that had his tier reset at the lower level after making a similar mistake.

It'd be hugely helpful if this were possible. I'll give it a go. Thanks!

Hey Nimbus,

Someone asked a question about the land tab in group window which should answer your question... /327/eb/229001/1.html

That's all I'll add to this since the others have covered pretty much all bases where help for your land issue is concerned :-)

That explains some of how it works, yes. Thank you! Possibly I'm being obtuse though (it's been that sort of day...) - when only one member of the group (me) has accounting ability, should my individual share of the group L$ show as being 1/3 of total (there's three members in the group altogether)? That's what I'm seeing, but since I'm the only one with accounting ability, I'd anticipate that 100% of the group funds would be allocated to me. Or does that re-allocation to me happen later on, during the paying-of-dividends phase? *scratches head and looks perplexed*

Sometimes the Lindens really do rock. I filed a support ticket a little while ago, and just got this in reply:

Thank you for contacting us with your query.

As your were unaware that you had to remove your tier contributions, I have reset your tier so that you will be billed $40.00.

Please bear the tier contributions in mind for future reference, as this is a one off courtesy.

If you have any further queries, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

My crappy day has just taken a turn for the better. :-)

Yippee! I love it when I'm actually helpful here! Even better when it results in someone getting money back AND showing LL in a good light. :)

To answer your other question, yes you should get 100% of the proceeds from the land sale. Not sure if you get it all at once or have to wait for the dividend. I think it comes right away.

The L$ from the sale of group land is divided only over the members with the "Pay Liabilities..." set.
Those members get the funds during a daily batch run that LL appear to start sometime after midnight SL time.

The fact that the group window indicated that the L$ will be divided over all members is "a feature" aka bug

Be sure to have an alt of yours in the group so you *know* that it will always have at least two members. Otherwise there is a risk of the group being disbanded and the land going 'poof'.

As a general follow-up:

I think that most issues with group land and group-deeded objects would be avoided if people bear in mind that the group is *a different person*. In Rl, you might own a company, but the company is separate legal entity.

*You* might be the owner of the group, but *you* are not the owner of anything that the group owns.

Perhaps the best parallel is that the group is an alt. An alt's tier arrangements and object ownerships are completely separate from yours.
