From: Kira Cuddihy What about France? Paris specifically... The last time I was there, they added the tip on to the check then expected another tip on top of that.... If they aren't pleased with what they get, chances are you could be thrown out of the window or your money thrown back at you. What a lovely visit that was. I've been to 14 countries and Tipping is not popular in many of them except Turkey, and out right refused as an insult on some. Tips may be expected in Paris but in Cannes and Nice it was not. I think i tipped in Sweden, and maybe in Germany it was frowned at. I did tip the red headed bar tender in Kiel, but not with money. Oh Tipping was acceptable in Bahrain too.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Can someone explain the underlying principles of the "tip" mentality to me? In my business I do an excellent job and none of our customers send me additional money for doing it, nor do I expect it. So why should I make extra payments over the cost stated on the menu in a bar or a restaurant for the normal standard of service I would expect? If the service is below par I complain, then put the place on my black-list and tell my friends to avoid the place. I am not responsible for the level of wages paid by the management. In some countries the staff are insulted by the offer of tips, even! Pep (If I get a service charge added to my bill automatically I get it removed, even if the service has been beyond what I would expect) You come off as cheap and probably poor. Just say : I'm broke! and be done with it! but as for ol Jump! I'm gettin moneh! I'm gettin moneh! catch meh in ya trap and I'm still gettin that moneh! I'm gettin that moneh! I'm gettin that moneh! catch meh in the club and i'm throwin nothin but them hun'eds!

Was your husband wearing check golf trousers, or perhaps you were talking American-French, ie English very loudly? Pep (The French have special rates for Americans)

From: Parvati Luna Well, I just finished explaining to my two boys that Mum's work couldn't afford her any more so now she gets to stay at home all the time. They loved it! At least the company gave me a nice big package . . . and I do love a nice big package So my obligatory question is this: who else is in the same boat? Or am I rowing alone? -P No - I'm rowing the same boat too Parvati - good luck to all who sail in her!

Pep (or is it enforced in the same way as employing illegal aliens isn't?) Yes, pricing the people with low skills or productivity out of the market is a good thing. Not allowing people to contract for what ever their services will bring, causing them to be unable to find any employment is the civilized thing to do.

You're probably right, but it's not *my* game, nor is netball for boys, nor the sissy form of rugby you play over there. Pep (And as for a blond Bond . . . forget it!) PS I ain't English, if that's what you are getting at, and neither was Bond.

I can't claim to be a victim of layoffs, but I *am* unemployed and looking for work. I left a finance job with a non-profit several years ago, suffering from a bit of burnout and hoping to pursue a more creative line of work making and selling jewelry in the art festival market. I had a small inheritance that has financed that adventure--there's still some of that left, but I need to get back to earning a regular paycheck. I've done a lot of different kinds of work, including accounts payable, environmental education, event and meeting planning, administrative work, some copywriting and editing, and retail management. I'm in Portland, Oregon and not really in a position to relocate (hubby has a job and selling the house isn't viable right now), but I'm capable of doing a wide variety of jobs. Argos, I'm glad you suggested we post something here about what we're looking for and where we are. It's all about the networking these days, and you never know who knows someone who knows someone who knows a company with the right job opening.
