Is there a way to go to The Moon in SL?

Does anyone have a LM he/she could send me that I could go to the Moon? (And no, seeing this is SL, a spacesuit is not necessary).

I've tried, but no matter how high I fly up, the moon doesn't get any closer. I'm beginning to think it's a hoax. I did uncover a soundstage that looks suspiciously like the spot where Armstrong's crew allegedly "landed":

It looks pretty fake, no wonder NASA had to fuzz up the video.

You can get a space suit for free at Nicky Ree's shop, if you want to believe this so-called "moon" thing isn't just a prop projected overhead to divert the masses.

You'd have to make one and go.

Hm, the closest I could get you would be Inspire Space Park. I think you can probably get yourself into a pretty good orbit ...

Oh that sounds like a fun sim to build... eternal night, built on a platform above 1024m, lots of sculpty craters, a giant prim extending into the horizon adding depth to the illusion...

All you'd need then, is a little prim Earth in the sky.

Oh, and moonbase alpha.

[14:50] You: here is an offbeat question
[14:51] You: is it possible to fly to the moon in SL?
[14:51] Joppa Linden: lol.. nope. it's unreachable
[14:52] Joppa Linden: it's not a physical object.. it's like trying to reach the horizon or the blue sky

Unfortunately, you can't get to the one you see in the sky. That would be pretty fun. There are a handful of space themed sims and at least two I can think of dedicated to RL space travel. You could also build a moon sim that looked like the surface of the moon.

I saw a pic of an avatar next to a linden flag on the moon...but I'm pretty sure the whole thing was a conspiracy set up by LL to beat the WoW and Sims avatars to the moon. I'm pretty sure. :p :D

That build at Elon is definately worth checking out. Somewhere near there is also a build of Mars that shows an asteroid impact happening.

Try searching on "Galactica", you'll have to fly yourself up but their ought to be a moon up there somewhere.

At the International Space Museum you can fly a Gemini capsule into space, and then take a tour of the solar system including a trip down to the surface of Mars. It's located in either Spaceport Alpha or Spaceport Bravo, can't remember which, but just look for one of those regions on the map, or search places for the International Space Museum. There are a whole bunch of other cool exhibits there and in the surrounding sims.

I also found this device a long time ago that is a rocket that you rez and then sit in, and it launches you up to 3 or 4 thousand meters and then rezzes a moon base. Unfortunately I can't remember where I got it.

I got exactly what you're looking for - its the Universe Sphere with a rotating Earth, orbiting moon, and more. At 4000 meters, it's about as high as objects can go in SL.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Hilbert/126/124/4000 (never mind that SLurl will show no data and empty maps; the teleport will still work. It's just another bug that Linden Labs has failed to fix for well over a year.)

or you can use the app teleport:

secondlife:///app/teleport/Hilbert/126/124/4000/ (cut and paste this into chat, than click on the link from the chat history)

If you're using the old SL client or the SL bug of the day hits you, you may end up at the wrong altitude (768m, 1000m, etc). If so, use this SLurl, click on the nearby teleport pad next to the volcano entrance and select Universe.
