In terms of roleplay:
My Partner's Avatar and my Ceera avatar love each other very much, and have had a child between them. Our roleplay developed over a long period of time, had us dating for several years, then living together for a year, then finally 'getting married', and declaring as Partners. And I do mean years of real time passing, and not just "And now we'll agree 6 months have passed, and...". We've been roleplaying together since long before either of us came to SL.

In Real terms? :
My Partner's Player and my real self are just very good friends, who enjoy creating fictional stories together, as real-time roleplaying. We agreed from the start that any "romance" was just collaborative fiction - play-acting between the characters that we were describing - and that in real terms, friendship was the limit of our involvement. I'm married in RL, and make that very clear to my on-line friends. I've never met my Partner's Player face to face, and doubt I ever will. We live in different countries.

It's things like THAT which make SL a great place. Congrats you two, and thank you for sharing =^.^=

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

At the moment I build houses, clubs, even cars that work. I buy land, go exploring, clubbing, swimming at naturist beaches, chat to people etc. etc..

If I had a partner I'd just be stuck at home cooking and ironing.

That was an awesome storey, Phoenix!
I am partnered to my RL husband. I love him just as much in SL as I do in RL. He started on SL first, he's always into PC games of any kind and saw SL on a show about online "games". I joined him on SL a few months later, and we partnered pretty quickly. For one thing, we decided to be partnered only to each other and never be involved with others on SL. I would love a SL wedding since we didn't have an overly big and fancy one in RL, but he's decreasing him SL time, so I doubt that will happen. :(

OMG, Carli...the two of you got it all BACKWARDS!

I blame the lag.

You know when he told me he missed his period, I first thought "ZOMGs he's an under-aged high schooler!" Luckily that wasn't the case. But then it came clear I had to make an honest man of him, so the baby would have a mother.

Id never heard of this either. Do you think he was trying to trap me?

I wouldn't say ALL have the same short-lived outcome. My partner and I have been together for nearly 13 months now. And we have met other couples that have been partnered as long or longer.

Before we made that commitment, we took the time to actually talk about it and our feelings. And, as in all relationships, we have had a few rough times. She is a true friend, a soul mate and one of the most loving and compassionate people I've ever met in SL.

If you are only in it for the "pixel bumping" then, of course, its only going to last a few days. But if you really make a connection, well... :-)

You're case is a rare exception to the rule type thing. But for the most part it's short-lived.

I have to agree with Ricardo on this one.

Most SL relationships are basically One night stands that last for a month.

SL Partnerships are those SL relationships that last TWO months.

:p

The rare exceptions are nice though.

The reason I partnered? I was bored...

*ducks as her hubby glares at her* Actually, it was to stop people from hitting on me and since my RL hubby has an av.. it made sense at the time ;)

Are you partnered for love, business, or something else?

I sometimes notice on profiles that a person will have a new partner every week or so. I often come across people who are partnered with their own alts, business partners, or a friend. Then there are those who are partnered with their in-world sweetheart...and in some cases, their real-world sweetheart.

Why are you partnered?

first was love, then business lol (to the same person) now no one :(

My partner and I have been partnered for the better part of a year. We care about each other a lot and though a little box in my profile doesn't mean tons to me, I realize it does to my partner so I am proud to display "Piper Erato" when I go about my life.

Exactly what we are varies. We both have multiple avatars, multiple RP characters. When we're little kids, we might be the best of friends and love exploring together and romping around. When we're adolescents, there might be something more tender. In some situations, we might just roleplay hating each other.

So why am I partnered? Piper doesn't need an explanation.

I've been with my partner for nearly 3 years so what can I say? We are used to each other.

Whoa Phoenix, thank you for sharing that! So sweet and really takes the cynical edge off of the whole issue of partners and romance in SL.

I am partnered because my partner and I are great friends in RL, and she is always someone I can talk to, no matter what the subject is. When I am on SL, I can think of nothing I would rather be doing than spending time with her... So, that is why I am partnered.

/me rubs eyes and scratches head .... I could have sworn we were talking about SecondLife here.

Morgaine comes to SL to get away from the ironing. I meet her there. We partnered before SL.

Why even ask this stupid question. It is obvious why you partner with people.
