real question. Does the size of ones inventory determine load times?

Ive noticed that a new avatar unladen with SL baggage moves with ease in conditions that bedevil my main accounts. All with inventories over 25k.

DO masive inventories effect load and performance for avatars? Any discussion....

I have no technical info to back this up. That said. I noticed long ago that keeping my inventory under 5k made a HUGE difference in both the lag I experienced and my load times.

I can only guess that part of the processor time is going to fetching your inventory and part to loading everything which makes things slow down. But I really dont understand how SL systems work enough to say for sure. Just a common sense guess. ;)

I'm in trouble then....... I have 45K but I try to delete old stuff in my inventory each month to keep it manageable.

Initially upon log in I imagine it does make a difference as the client and LL's servers are communicating what texture data, etc to load onto the avatar from the inventory file that is on LL's servers. Once all that is all sorted and sent to the client and rendered there is not much going on with your inventory.........change clothes or textures and the process begins again. Accessing your inventory in any way would cause the problem too. If your inventory is huge there is a lot for the servers to search and fetch for you. Once all that is done, the size of your inventory would have no bearing on your lag.

I can't find it now, but I've definitely seen it argued in here that a big inventory does cause lag, and there was an explanation that made sense. The number at which it started to be noticeable was pretty big though, certainly 20,000 and I think it might have been 30,000.

Once the textures are downloaded from LL's servers to your client there is nothing more going on with your inventory until you do something to make LL's servers fetch the data from the file that is located on the servers again. There is not a constant stream of data going on once everything is downloaded to the client and placed in your cache.

Now if you have a really huge inventory (like maybe 50k) for the servers to search through and there are a lot of concurrent users online it could take quite a while to get everything loaded to the client. If your internet connection is slow or you have a bottleneck somewhere between your client and the servers the lag could be huge. But once all is downloaded and cached that goes away. There are any number of things that mainly have to do with the users computer configuration to cause lag to persist. Slow reading of the HHD, a HHD that is over 90% full, a fragmented HHD, slow processor, many background programs running are just a few that come to mind.

I do not see any difference in moving and such between an "empty" account and my main

however I do see a difference in trying to utilize the texture selection in edit mode

that being said I am now taking the time (prolly end up taking me a week at least) to use the scripts I made to store my textures in prims

and deleting all the old textures I get from update groups and such

every little bit will help (I hope)

My inventory has never gone over 2,500 so I haven't had the opportunity to test this... but even at < 2,300 items in inventory, I still think things can be plenty laggy.

I also recall a thread that discussed "too many" friends on your friends list will lead to a laggy user experience... something about having to constantly update the client about the status of a long friends list.

Anything that causes the servers to have to search/fetch to the users client is a potential for increased lag. That is a product of having everything stored on LL's servers.

I read here somewhere, pretty long ago, that if you can reduce the number of folders/items in the top two levels of your inventory that basic startup and inventory window opening will go faster -- i.e. rather than having My Inventory, with a Notecards folder that has all notecards in it, create another folder or folders under Notecards and move all the notecards into those folders. I remember way back then, moving all notecards, landmarks, and misc objects into another level of folders, but cannot really remember if it made any difference on anything at all.

Moving, no. Teleporting is more likely a problem.

Don't store any original or unusal textures in prims in inventory. They can be expunged form asset servers if they're not inworld or in inventory. (Ditto for things stored in notecards.)

yep don't plan to store any non full perm textures in the prims

is that intentional? (I mean, the deleting of assets stored inside of prims but not currently in use) or is it just a side-effect of some decision that was done without enough thinking? or do you mean it is just an statisticak "force of nature" thing?

I have had a few misc items in inventory disappear from the asset server and so have quite a few other folks. I have also unpacked boxes of textures that I picked up a year ago and they all seem to be fine. I personally think it is a hit or miss issue entirely.

i notice a consistent and dramatic speed difference when using a near invless alt as opposed to my main (20,000+ items). not only are logins and tps faster, but there is less lag!

I keep mine under 9000 items pretty well on my mains, but I still notice my combat alt with only 2500 items seems to suffer less again and be less laggy for combat sims.

My inventory looks like a huge bomb just went off in it.

I have 10K+ items, and when I open the inventory, it does lag a bit until the items are shown. But no other lag of any kind.

I need to clean up my stuff :P

I'd never thought of this, other than in connection with inventory loading times. I'm quite efficient about mine, it's only about 3600 items at present.

Someone once said that having the mini-map open causes lag. I can see that it might do, a tiny bit. I normally have avatar names showing temporarily, so they fade out after the person has been in view for a few seconds. presumably that also makes a miniscule reduction in lag.

This prompted me to do some minor re-organizing yesterday to follow the above mentioned setup. I cut my number of top level folders in half and then reduced the next level by about 60%. I logged out and relogged and now opening a second inventory window actually does open faster - about half as fast as before.

Apparently there are issues lately and they've just stopped allowing uploads this morning. I've been crashing all morning every time I go into the textures part of inventory.

This thread could get much more interesting if we started discussing how the size of other things affected your SLife.

:D

decided to try this myself... and it does seem to load the inventory faster (as in switching from folder to folder)

opening a second inventory window...seems to be a bit faster too

have not checked to see if it makes a difference on selecting texture in edit mode

depending on the mood of the asset server, my inventory might contain anything from less than 10k items to almost 35k items on it's best days, I haven't though of comparing the performance between the days with less and with more inventory items unaccounted for, I'll try to remember paying attention to that from now on...

I remember 3 or 4 years ago the servers were in major meltdown and a Linden mentioned something about smaller inventories helped asset server lag and lag in general.

That set many MANY people to frantically cleaning out their inventories. SO many hitting that empty trash folder that we um....crashed the asset server.
