Getting back to the original point of this thread: From: Amie Juneberry Hi everyone,
Im new here, my av was born only a few days ago. Unfortunately it will be a little while until I can log in again as I have reached my ISP's download cap for the month already.
Upon doing a little research, I have found that in general SL uses an average of 100kbps during gameplay. This would mean that it is downloading 350 megabytes per hour.
I hope I have been horribly mistaken as this seems like an insane amount of data for an online game to be using. SL isn't like other online game (technically it isn't even a game). WoW, CoH, Everquest, etc. store most of the content on your hard drive, the servers only being used to tell your computer what features to load for the other people around you, what missions you have access to, etc. In Second Life most of the content is created by the residents, and is constantly being added to. If SL was like any other game you'd be downloading patches every few minutes to keep up with the constant updates, so instead you download objects, textures, etc. from Linden Lab's servers as and when required. This obviously means you download far more than when playing an MMO, but allows SL to be much more flexible.

From: Nina Stepford here in aus that would leave you without an isp, full stop. here it would probably get me an upgrade but i have their best..so if they did unplug me i would take my businesses to their competitor and then wait about a month for the ones i just left to start mailing me requests to use their service.. it must suck to only have one service out there..

I have installed a bandwidth monitor, i guess the only thing for me to do now is wait til i have some more bandwidth (end of billing month!), change some settings and see what happens. i have been hopping around like a madwoman since sl is still all so new for me, hopefully i will be able to calm down a bit once the novelty has worn off. Unfortunately I can't go changing my isp even if i wanted to as im renting my place and the internet came included. I just hope 30gb will be enough next time. Thanks for all your helpful answers, i wasnt expecting to get such a good response on my first post! Amie xx

It's been a while since I was reading on the capping subject, so I might be mixing things up, but I seem to recall that the Comcast 250Gig cap is just the start.
I may be getting this mixed up with Time Warners plans, which might well be implemented or partially so, to have rather low caps, different caps for different rates, such a a 5 gig cap.
If you watch Comcast Internet TV, or whatever they do or will call that, that data will count towards the Comcast 250 Gig limit, so you might have the joy of fighting for data use with a video addicted housemate.

From: Kasuga Hax I use a joint line DSL/Cable 20/1 and 15/2 Mbit. SL core uses the Cable hookup, media and other downloads go through the DSL port.. How do you do that? Or rather, can that be done in Windows XP? I asked someone who checked with their networking expert who said it couldn't, that when two are hooked up it favors one... I would have imagined there'd be a setting to pick which to use? Just like when you used to tell programs which modem you wanted them to use...

If you don't know what it is, call it a Dual core Internet connection that spreads your usage over two lines.
Can you explain how to do this and what system you are on? If you do, i will order DSL the same day.

I'd suggest their "expert" go learn something about large business networks. It's called channel bonding, and can be done with wired ethernet, wireless, DSL or cable (i.e. any connection type). The easiest way to set it up requires specialised hardware that supports it, though you could also set up a Linux computer as a router to handle the process for you (not sure if there's any way to set it up under Windows or Mac OS as I've never tried it).

You don't use "channel bonding", you do it in the routing table. You set the route to the SL servers to go to the upstream router on the cable network, and you set the default route to go through the upstream router on the DSL network.
It's easier if one of the upstreams has a static IP, otherwise you can write a script that looks at the routing tables and updates them dynamically. Or you can just set up your local cable and DSL modems for NAT and give each a different internal static IP, and do the routing in your local box.

short answer, if you have both services, one good router will do the trick

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I've had so-called unlimited data usage for ages. That's how it's been marketed where I live. Comcast, my ISP, is in the process of implementing caps on usage, though just what limits they'll set in different places is yet to be seen. . where i live comcast has already initiated a cap. It's 250 GB a month. Which is a lot. i torrent, have SL running about 12 hours a day.. use Xbox live and youtube.. and haven't ever reached the monthly 250GB. Though maybe someone else already responded with this, admittedly i didn't read through the whole topic.

From: Argent Stonecutter Or you can just set up your local cable and DSL modems for NAT and give each a different internal static IP, and do the routing in your local box. Okies, I found a tutorial about this but don't understand it and it's late enough I don't want to break anything! But on Wikipedia under drawbacks it says if you use NAT some things won't work anymore? Like UDP, which sounds familiar to me I believe in association with SL? But my question is can we use this with dialup? In the responses here there's talk about routers, but my other connection is plugging in my cell phone which comes up as dialup... So would trying this be fruitless to begin with?

Until reading this, I thought Austria was backwards in its internet service. I am on a 4MB flat rate contract, which in the wording includes "unlimited data transfer." I have been on this service now since before I started in SL, and my usual usage is between 35-40GB per month. This I have been repeatedly told is normal usage, which gives me plenty of time on SL, to explore and enjoy all there is to offer.

From: Crystal Falcon But on Wikipedia under drawbacks it says if you use NAT some things won't work anymore? I have been running SL behind a NAT router since 2005. In fact if you have more than one computer online at a time you're probably already using NAT. And dialup/broadvand/trained parrots screaming hexadecimal at each other/... is pretty much irrelevant. That's all layer 1/2 stuff.

and now i have exceeded my generous 14gb of monthly 'peak time' usage and am now capped. my isp has now 'shaped' (throttled) my bandwidth to resemble a 1200 baud modem
