"You are an idiot if you thought there really was going to be a big announcement." http://blog.secondlife.com/What an ass I was thinking they would come up with something that would improve the user experience. They can't even fix the code on the forum...

quoted from blog: "Mitch’s announcement will be about a new program that recognizes the achievements of Residents in making Second Life a disruptive technology platform"
Huh? That sentence doesn't look right. Why is achievements of the Residents in make Second life disruptive technology platform?

Never describe an announcement as big over two weeks before it's made. Never works for me. Oh, if they were to announce avatar puppeteering, multi-touch gestural controllers, in-viewer email client, IMing to external IM clients, "live" html pages on prims instead of static, new avatar meshes, and so on , I suppose that would be better than never. Let's see, gambling and banking are outlawed, maybe the big announcement is something else to be outlawed. Oops, too late, someone actually read the blog. Recognizing residents, I guess that means formalizing the FIC concept. At some point, someone got the idea to use the phrase "disruptive technology" to mean "technology with a high impact or that produces a significant social change". I suspect it was inspired by the things like using the word Bad to mean Good.

/me points people who are too lazy or too busy whining to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_Technology . Not a term I'd heard before but it took all of 15 seconds to look it up and read the first line, which is enough to find out what it means. From: someone Mitch’s announcement will be about a new program that recognizes the achievements of Residents in making Second Life a disruptive technology platform. zomg! Those bastards! Quick, somebody do an open letter or class action lawsuit!!

I am not one to generally post to the forums that often, but I mean really...this is it? This is the "big announcement"? The one that they have been building on for two solid weeks? I mean, this isn't April 1st, right? This isn't some joke?

A disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is a term describing a technological innovation, product, or service that uses a "disruptive" strategy, rather than a "revolutionary" or "sustaining" strategy, to overturn the existing dominant technologies or status quo products in a market. I still don't know what that means.

All LL mentioned was a "special guest speaker with a very important announcement", in the third paragraph of a long entry on SL5B. The hypesteria came from users.

And Mitch sits back and watches everyone go: "Um, what?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_technology for the lazy. I think the bottom line of this whole thing is that Second Life is the new 3D web, or something. (Hint: It's not.)

Heh, being more pessimistic, I was figuring the Big Announcement was goin to be that company X bought 51% stake in SL. X being Google or IBM or Yahoo or something. Thus of course ruining SL for good. So I for one am glad that this announcement was really not so big after all God save us all from Important Announcements!

Yeah, someone said on the blog, too, that this was all our fault. Well, hmmm. "A special guest speaker with a very important announcement" - to make to the residents of SL at SL's Fifth Birthday Party - - well GEE. How silly to expect that it would be an important announcement! (Maybe even something good!) It's so clear in retrospect. Obviously, it was not going to be an important announcement. Because if it had been, they would have said something like, "an important announcement." Obviously, it was going to be nothing but silly self-serving claptrap. Our fault entirely for misunderstanding. Next time we will know. coco P.S. I wonder who started that "crazy rumor" about an important announcement, anyway? Must have been one of those hysteria-prone residents.

At least it is a guest speaker, someone with no connection present or past with Linden Lab.

From: Brenda Connolly A disruptive technology or disruptive innovation is a term describing a technological innovation, product, or service that uses a "disruptive" strategy, rather than a "revolutionary" or "sustaining" strategy, to overturn the existing dominant technologies or status quo products in a market. I still don't know what that means. You've probably seen my posting at SLU already. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1628049,00.asp From: someone "A disruptive technology is defined as a low-performance, less expensive technology that enters a heated-up scene where the established technology is outpacing people's ability to adapt to it. The new technology gains a foothold, continues to improve, and then bumps the older, once-better technology into oblivion. Sounds good. The problem is that there is not one example of this ever happening. When boiled down, the notion is essentially a rewrite of the adage Adam Osborne devised to explain the mediocrity of the Osborne 1: "Adequacy is sufficient." So it sounds to me like they're saying they deliberately engineered SL to be a mediocre, under-performing piece of buggy crap, because the lower entry requirements would result in more users, allowing it to overtake more shiny, well-engineered, competing software. This fails to take into account that there is no serious competitor to SL (yet), and it was the dropping of payment method info on 6/6/06 -- and not the technology -- that put registration statistics into the millions. This "disruptive technology" label is just a soundbite to justify their failures IMO. The only people they are fooling are themselves. That blog entry is embarrassing to read really.

From: Walker Moore ......... So it sounds to me like they're saying they deliberately engineered SL to be a mediocre, under-performing piece of buggy crap, because the lower entry requirements would result in more users, allowing it to overtake more shiny, well-engineered, competing software. This fails to take into account that there is no serious competitor to SL (yet), and it was the dropping of payment method info on 6/6/06 -- and not the technology -- that put registration statistics into the millions. ...... I read the Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_technology and other references with that sort of thought. It's possible to read widely diverging theories into the various flavours of Disruptive Technology v. SL But then it hit me that.... This has nothing to do SL per se. It is simply about people using SL as a disruptive technology *platform*. It has nothing to do with SL competing with other virtual worlds. SL is a relatively low-cost facilitator of developments requiring 3D visualisation and interaction. Mitch et al want to encourge such developments. A new technology/application could be developed on SL and then moved to private servers and networks once proven. That does not really require SL to be a great deal better than it is now.

Thanks Sling. From: Everett Linden Mitch’s announcement will be about a new program that recognizes the achievements of Residents in making Second Life a disruptive technology platform. It seems my reading comprehension needs some work. Still... something of an anti-climax, considering.

I'm sure Everett Linden can explain to you how there was never any mention of an "important announcement", and Katt can explain how, when the said "very important announcement", they didn't mean, you know, "very important announcement", but *the other* kind.
