I can't imagine leaving a rl partner who is playing in SL for another..without intensive investigation.

I'm tempted to say that your friend would've found another venue anyway regardless of the fact you introduced her to SL or not.

I mean this new partner had to fit the bill on alot of levels that her RL partner didn't...but then to turn around and say "it's just a game"?

Thats throwing away something RL for a 'game"...not very prudent IMHO.

I have met friends here who had rl partners at home..sitting..watching them play..I would NEVER even entertain the idea or presume that what I have to offer virtually could somehow fill RL needs.

Two different things totally....then again I've brought friends to this game who i wanted to get to know at my own speed...and once that SL can of worms was opened..there's no reclosing it..they ended up meeting someone else willing to move from canada and marry them for a visa.

:p ~Lana Tomba

Agrees. I friggin hate being in the middle too - I kind of feel like it's my fault, which I know is silly. As you said, it prob would have happened anyway in some fashion.

I just can't stand the disrespect of it all - Arrrrrrrg!

you don't have an option for me.

no its not a game, the people in it are real people and to be taken seriously. Business is a real thing here and i hopefully will make a positive mark on it someday and a profit. The relationships are just as real as if in real life. Well i hope they are, I don't want someone who can be with another guy in rl or sl if were in a relationship in sl or rl.

I do call it a game just for the lack of a better short word. if anything was virtual reality this is it.

I agree with you... I met someone here in SL and I am very happy with him. IN RL -
I can see everyones point and I accept that. Some people use SL as an escape from RL. Some do things that they only dream of. But hopefully everyone keeps in mind that there are real life people on the other side of that Avatar with feelings. I know that these polls can change from year to year, and we all have our own thoughts of this so called (Game) isn't it wonderful how diverse we can all be?

Now can I have pie too?

I'd love to have answered the poll, but the options were so poorly worded that none of them fit :(

I think Jopsy has already articulated my view far more eloquently than I would have.

At least there, you can screw something up and kill your character. I tried Sims 2 and within minutes my little guy tried to make himself a snack then set himself on fire when he tried to use the stove. They don't teach "Stop, Drop and Roll" in Sims 2 kindegarten like they do in EVERY SINGLE OTHER SCHOOL ON FRIGGIN EARTH!!! So he panicked and ran around in circles until he burned up. Then they buried him in the danged yard. THE YARD!! How creepy is that? His wife went out to visit him and sob on his grave every night.

I decided I didn't want any more horrible deaths on my conscience, so I never played again.

At any rate, keeping your Sims out of the kitchen is apparently the goal of the game. Either that or acquiring a fire extinguisher early on. In any event, there's a goal. God knows what would have happened if I had bought them a set of steak knives or a swimming pool or a backhoe or a sausage grinder. *shudders*

HAHAHAHA! That is hysterical! (I'm picturing this right now and laughing my a** off.) And could probably only happen to your Sim, Trout. You sooo remind me of an outside sales guy who used to work for my company. The strangest things would happen to him while he was on the road. Things that just don't happen to anyone else on earth. (He even hit one of his customers in the mouth with an errant golf ball while trying out clubs at Dave's-or at least I think that's what the place is called) Now, next time I talk to him, I can reassure him that he's not the only one!

None of the above applied to me, and I did not see a Pie option.

Its a game. It's fun. It's a place to make money. It's a social medium. it's a platform. it's the 3D web. It's a whole lot of things, and many more.

I agree with all of you.

Except Trout. Who else but you would try making himself a snack within minutes of being in a game, (or non-game). I totally disagree with that.

LOL! I used to torture The Sims SO bad!! (original Sims)

I'd make 'em go swimming, then take away the ladder so they drown.

I'd wall 'em up in a room with flammable stuff & watch 'em burn.

And many many more!!

I had a nice lil' graveyard going!

Even built neighborhoods (with some Modding)

I had a trailor park, complete with Pigs for pets
I had a nudist colony, complete with exposed genitals & cheesy 70s swinger decor.
I had a Goth mansion, occupied by my fiancee & I.

OH! And I had (keyword) a baby- surrounded by exploding Yard Gnomes. Then the Social Services lady took her away, but not before setting off a Gnome Chain Reaction! :p

I just wish it was like "Pets" where you could pick 'em up & shake the crap outta them!! :D

I keep hearing that SL is a game.

so in your opinion, do you see it as a game?

What do you mean a "game"? Are you suggesting SL isn't real? LOL.. oh you silly person, you've been watching way too many Matrix movies.

[Lota begins to think about this.... “OMG!!! What if it isn't actually real!!!”]

Second Life is certainly not a game.

Second Life is most definitely NOT a game....for the following reasons:

A game has a goal...one person or team winning...one person or team losing
A game typically has a method of scoring, to determine the winner...see previous point.
A game has inviolate rules that are evenly applicable to all players...

Second life is a 3-d socially interactive internet platform that allows creation of content by residents. Many of us use the platform to run businesses, and while I have heard of games that are businesses (NFL teams as an example) I have not seen a business run INSIDE a game...

I compare the social interactivity to that of an IRC chatroom...and I compare the businesses that are hosted on the platform, to 3-d websites...not really any different in business model to any other web-based commerce site.

Game:
- An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.
...
- A business or occupation; a line: the insurance game.
- An illegal activity; a racket.
- An object of attack, ridicule, or pursuit: The press considered the candidate's indiscretions to be game.

I don't feel SL is a game. It's a different sort of existence in another kind of world.

How I see it is that your First Life is conducted in the physical world we call real. There you interact with the world and other people using your mind, via a physical body. In SL you interact with the virtual world also using your mind, but via your computer and an avatar.

Games can be played -within- SL, if that's what you want (e.g. roleplaying etc), just as you could in RL, but the environment of SL itself isn't a game.

This actually made me laugh out loud. I love booby trapping the yard for the social services lady and baiting it with a baby. That's so awful and wrong that it's hilarious.

I kinda see it as a game. But thats because most of my games are like te Sims. i don't do welll in quests or fighting etc. i love to create, but am appalling at drawing or making in RL so I use things like SL and the Sims for it.
But there are real people so it is much, much more than a game to me.

I get the feeling I may be a bit sick-minded... I used to have competitions with my brother to see who could kill their guy the quickest... I think i won by putting a family in a room, no doors, setting a fire. The whole family was dead in under a minute... i'm sick lol.
i also once used the cheats and debug mode to make a woman have 20 kids in one day's playing it. Poor woman was tearing her hair out lol. all these little babies crying, some of them were aliens and everything lol.
But then i also used to make huge builds and had great fun with that.

There is no gameplay, therefore it's not a game. It's an enviroment in which to be.

From: Trout Recreant

SL isn't really a game because there is no set goal, no real strategy, nothing. It's a medium for communication and it's a community, but the same thing applies. The people matter. Sl is just a medium for bringing the people together.

If you go over to the Sims 2 forums you'll see the exact same question raised time and time again and your words are repeated time and time again. I'm sure many in SL would argue that Sims 2 is much more of a game than SL is. But is it?
