After a hiatus, I wanted to get back with a zen sitting group but felt a little strange showing up as a 7+ foot adonis. I wanted to be honest and simple in my character, befitting a Buddhist.

So I found a older man's skin (MB Skins) and created shape that was far more representative of my 48 year-old, 5' 11" self. I loved how at the end of my last zen sitting session I was dwarfed by the avatars standing beside me.

I have had the greatest time with this little old man! He has so much more character than my beefcake stud!

Has anybody else experimented with senior avatars? Why are we so obsessed with youth and beauty?

I've tried playing round with the sliders to make the age of my AV more realistic and closer to my real age. Her boobs don't look like she just stepped off the set of baywatch, but she still appears to be in her mid 20's. I wouldn't mind a skin that was slightly more realistic.

Nah!

Pep (I wear one of those shape/skin combinations most of the day in rl and it is no fun)

I found it very freeing to not have to out-do anybody with my muscles or looks, or the cool clothes or accessories that I wore.

I think it's interesting that while child avatars get talked about a lot here in the forum, I rarely run across anything about seniors.

I might just have to become an advocate.

I change the way I look quite often, however I have not done the senior look yet

I no longer have my youth in RL, so I cherish it in SL

Well, there was that time we had a couple of forum members don their oldie look and do a pole dance for us:

I think senior avatars would only add to the simulated reality and thus enhance SL.

But I'd say for the majority that youth and beauty sells, as it also sells in RL too as a huge 10 billion dollar a year industry (and that 10 billion is just for makeup). Why? I don't know? Perhaps the Hollywood mentality?

Awww you look great! :)

I think it's all in how we perceive aging... we sometimes forget that there are some very excellent years called "middle age";(of which you have given a terrific example!) and in our minds skip straight to the nursing home part.

Take a look at the avatars on the secondlife.com homepage; Linden markets the concept and we enter SL with the desire and pocket full of L$ to achieve the fantasy. Once we find our true virtual selves, we might allow our imagination to think outside the box.

Shelley is just a sophmore, so she has a couple of years yet... Oh, that kind of senior. NM.

I toyed with idea of a sage-like avatar, but thought it too similar to a wizard. I thought wizards should be ubiquitous in a fantasy environment, but come to think of it, there are few if any wizards either.

I'll have to put together something like that. Could be fun.

But I can tell you as someone sliding into gray, I would not choose to be elderly if we had sliders and skins in real life.

I think a lot of this has to do with context. Since dealing with reality is such a major part of Buddhism it seemed dishonest to present myself as some kind of idealized figure.

On the other hand, I don't think I'm going to use the old man the next time my partner and I frolic in our hot tub.

I was just surprised at how much a kick I get out of him! I can't wait to get him out on a dance floor.

29[SARTORIA] eco sweater — It looks as good on my 7 foot tall slab of meat as it does on my little old man.

very cool, nice unique look

sadly there are not a lot of senior skins in SL, I only seen one place that sells the full senior avatar, and well, I like unique hehe

I might try making one... we will see...

My furry av is older than the average, but it's so hard to tell with furries... my original av had "white lady" set that I enjoyed a great deal (if you aren't a mythology fan feel free to google it, there are hundreds of variations, mine was a older gentle soul that disappead when you weren't watching)...

I do tend to keep my avatars fit though, something I strive for in real life as well. ran into a great older male av a month or so back... very well done. it always amazes me how differently you are treated with different av's, ESPECIALLY older ones.

*chuckles*

I'm as "senior" as you can get :D

I have NEVER done the Beefcake-6 pack abs look.

Long hair? Yes. I have that in RL too.

The only thing I've done in SL is be a much taller me :)

Seriously, if I ever end up in a retirement home, I hope I have a laptop and access to SL.

Nice thing about being a dog is no one knows how old I am! I'll never tell if I color my fur. I would like to see more old folks, though. It gets kinda old seeing so many perfect looking young people around. Though I imagine it would be tough for senior citizens to find sturdy shoes and clothes that aren't too revealing.

maybe that is the niche that everyone keeps asking about

next time someone asks what is needed in SL

senior clothes, senior skins, senior shapes

(I might make some senior clothes just for the heck of it)

Then again... what is considered "senior clothes"?

I don't think Iyoba is particularly old, but she is small and a bit overweight. 4'10" and 125lb. I even made a bunch of bathingsuits for her that let her stick out her tummy. It's fun to see the reactions I get some of the time.
