What is and where can i find my avatar key? Your avatar key is the index into the database that uniquely specifies you. If you go to here, you can find a pyramid that will tell your key when you touch it: Pyramid Park 6, 182, 77 -Rob _____________________

Your avatar key is a unique identifier associated with your agent/account. It's commonly referred to as a UUID (Universally Unique Identifier). Each Second Life account (agent) has one of these unique keys, as does every single primitive, linked primitive set and texture, both in-world and in the asset database.
To find out your key, create a prim.. any prim will do, a box is fine. Edit that prim, click on the Content tab, and click the "New Script" button. Double click that new script, and erase everything there, and replace it with this: default { state_entry() { llSay(0, "Touch me to display your user key" ;} touch_start(integer total_number) { llSay(0, "Your user key is:"+(string) llDetectedKey(0)); } } Close the editor, and click on the box. What is and where can i find my avatar key? _____________________

Once you find your key, you can copy and paste it into your profile notes for yourself, and or put it in a notecard named My Key with your key added to the notecard name - that way you can find your key just by typing "my key" in the inventory seach field.
Or make a t-shirt and put the key on the back, a few months of staring at it all the time and you'll be able to recite it while you're sleeping. _____________________

What does your key do for you? I mean, aside from being how your avatar is identified, what benefit do you have to knowing it versus not knowing?

i was under the impression that it could be used for email-to-IM systems. a way to send a RL email to an avi in world as an sl IM.

I have got my key for my lucky chair. By inserting it into a script, you can be emailed by the object.

i was under the impression that it could be used for email-to-IM systems. a way to send a RL email to an avi in world as an sl IM. One reason is probably the need to maintain state (you can reply from email, but what the other sees in-world is your SL name, not your email addie), although likely it serves as a simple anti-spam measure as well. If everyone could just send us an in-world IM through email by our key, then we all would get spammed to death. If you want to send a message to a rezzed in-world object then you do indeed prefix its full key (one of the object-to-object communication methods is using email). |

I'm told it used to be possible to "grief" someone by knowing their key, but this hasn't been so for a long while - whatever scripting functionality allowed this has been definately removed.
For us scripters, its mostly used for communications, including IM's and email. It can also be used for particle effects - there's an option that allows particles to follow a target which can be either an object or a person. A script can find the key of a person by having them touch an object, listening to chat, or with a sensor sweep (96 meter max range). |

If you forget your avatar name, but know your key, you can go to one of the name/key databases on the web, punch in your key, and find your name.

I need the following, and have always sucked at Regular expressions... can somebody help?
What I need to do is check to see if the user has entered a valid UUID format, in a .php page outworld... specifically: The regex code that will need to be matched to make it a valid entry **regex delimiters are required** |

You can add up the numbers in your key and see if it totals "23"

/[0-9a-f]{8}-[0-9a-f]{4}-[0-9a-f]{4}-[0-9a-f]{4}-[0-9a-f]{12}/ Great... One more question... how can I exclude any whitespace from before or after the UUID? (This works, but allows user to input leading and trailing spaces without kicking back error.) |
