Is there anyway to tell if the woman you are talking to is not really a man? or vice versa? ========================================================== Hello Jauani! I think that if the answer to this question is of paramount importance to you, then you have no choice but to ask the avatar what their SL gender is. Or what their RL gender is. Or whichever is paramount to you. And I do like that choice of word: paramount...quite fitting! And then of course they can answer you to the best of their knowledge ( ), or they can skirt the truth or they can lie or they can ignore the question or they can disappear. You will be saying to them: I care about you in a RL sort of way, but I only care about you if you have the corresponding RL penis/vagina to go along with my RL penis/vagina. So, if this is what you want to say to them, then by all means go ahead. I just think you stand to lose more than you gain. Also, I was trying to tease out your usage/definition of gender. Is it truly gender at issue here or is it sex? Are you concerned about the physical apparatus or the mental environment? The genotype or the phenotype or the emototype? If you define gender by one's X's and Y's then tell me please which of these you are looking for: The basics? 46,XX female 46,XY male or perhaps: 46,XX male 46,XY female Swyer Syndrome or: 47,XYY male 47,XXX female or: 47,XXY male 46,XrXp female or let's try some of the mosaicisms, shall we: 46,XY/47XXY male 46,XY/47,XXY male asst- 46,XX/47,XXY/48,XXXY/49,XXXY male 45,X/46,XY male 46,XY/45,X0/47,XXY male 46,XX/45/X female or go it alone? 45,X female 45,X0 female 45,Y you ain' never be'n born! how about the intersexuals? 46,XX with 11beta-OH-CAH virilized females Personally, I think that the hermaphrodites are onto something. I just can't choose between the sequential and the synchronous. What do you think? And don't get me started on how long my fingers are or who inhabited that second-hand womb before I got in there! Best of Luck! xyryx

It's been a while since I've peeked in on the tattered remnants of the SL official forums, but I do think I remember seeing this thread some time ago. And it's still alive and dragging itself feebly along after all this time, unwilling to submit to death. I approve.

From: Cocoanut Cookie I consider it the most liberating part of the internet, dwarfing even the information availability I enjoy so much. Because of the Internet, I am friends with people of all ages and genders, from all around the world. Oddly, even when we KNOW we are nowhere close in age, economic level, geographical location, physical handicap, or whatever, we still form close friendships. .......
Without the physical, and without the geographical and social divisions, it's more purely about the mental and spiritual - and mostly, I think, about the spiritual. (By which I don't mean religion; I mean the spirit of a person.) coco
Thororughly agree Coco, nicely said. .. and Alex, being a noob I'm glad it's reappeared. It is an important issue and I for one might never have gone excavating

Oh wow! Now I understand why he wants me to have a kitchen! roflmao
I don't have a kitchen. Why? Two reasons. First, what am I going to do in there? Cook dinner? Store food? Bleh. I'm not fond of my kitchen in real life, let alone having one here! Second reason is, I don't have prims for a kitchen. I have a beautiful living room, dining room and bedroom set, and as we all know, quality uses a LOT of prims.
But then, he does have a point. There is a totally different kind of 'cooking' for the kitchen. *grins*
My typing is usually downhill all the time. I spend many hours at a time at the keyboard, and make many typos. When I'm starting to get tired, I start ignoring typos. I don't always capitalize, and sometimes, believe it or not, even though I'm female, I forget punctuation!
Do I know for sure that my partner in SL has a male body in RL? Nope. Doesn't matter, cause this is what I do know. When he's around, I feel good. He listens to me ramble endlessly about work for a couple of hours when I've had a long or bad day. He gets my weird sense of humor, and actually thinks it's funny. Or at least, he pretends to think it's funny. He takes the time to show me the parts of SL that most newbies don't get to see, such as Bliss Basin, the botanical center, and beautiful romantic islands. He appeals to my mind. Yesterday, we spent almost all day wandering around looking at some of the bigger businesses in SL, just to look.
What he is outside of SL doesn't matter to me because I know everything that he is inside of SL. I know that inside of SL, he makes me feel like a better person and makes me want to be a better person.
These are truly the things that matter. Yeah. Some come here looking for sex, but there is so very much more to this place than that! And some come here looking for real life romance. That is something that is very rare. It's great when it happens, but so very rare. The people that do find it though, don't find it because when they first walk onto Orientation Island, or whatever it's called here, they're thinking "Hey! I think I'll snag me a spouse while i'm here!" They find it because they get out there and interact with other people. And then one person suddenly sparks their mind, and a great friendship forms. They build upon that. The ones built upon sex don't last longer than a few months. The ones build upon the true love of a friendship last forever.
So to the 1/3 you claim are here for only sex, I hope they enjoy this place. It is indeed all things to all people. I'd be extremely careful though, if I were you, to ensure that the person is indeed over eighteen. Spend time with them, engage them in real conversation. Don't just hop in the sack. Why? Because laws concerning minors and sexuality are extremely dodgy. And judges don't care if the person seemed really mature. Juries don't care if this is supposed to be an adult only environment. All they care about is that you are an adult and you should know the difference between an adult and a child.
And who knows? By interacting more with your potential sexual partners, you may just happen to find the one person you've been looking for all of your life, even if you didn't know you were looking.

From: Aimee Weber Well it's not like a quiz where you have to get the answers correct. I find a lot of RL women don't know the brand of their own hand bags and will say something like "Oh I have this brown purse I got at Target, I don't even know what it is." That's totally valid! On the other hand, RL guys who have tried to stump me have so far ALL said "PRADA" Every single one of them. LOL! lol, that is funny! Guys, Prada is what some women want, not necessarily what we can afford (they cost hundreds of dollars, some over $1000). But... they do make nice gifts. *hint* I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a bag no matter how nice it is. I'll take the knockoff for $50, Alex.

Though it is kinda interesting the answers given by some I've known to be guys behind girls avs in main chat when they are talking to others. I think it's obvious, but then again, I wonder if I didn't know for sure, would I question? One of the funniest ways I've heard someone ask, is 'do you wipe front to back or back to front?' Not entirely eliminating, but it certainly started a hilarious argument, I think some women educated some men that day!

From: Gummi Richthofen Umm, interesting stuff. First off: what's so inherently unpleasant about men of 60 years of age? Small splash of demonisation of the old there... Secondly, I dunno about the other guys, but I can't see the appeal in posing as a woman in order to have sex with another woman - what i'd be watching is some puppet-play in which my character isn't ME, and what's more, I can't ask for the moves and the feedback that are relevant to me. In fact, it would be a pretty spine-chilling rejection of me and everything that I am, if I had to do that. Meeting of minds is a myth? What are you , a book-burner or something? there is nothing unpleasant about 60 year old men. some people think they are hot. others do not. if you are reading demonisation in there, it's your filter, not my writing. i don't burn books. sell them to a used book store for a quarter a pop.

From: Jauani Wu you asked relelvant question. the source of my statistic. i got it from the sl forums. the "under 18 epidemic" thread. if didn't engage this thread with your flamethrower, i might be more receptive to your off topic questions. No. What you said was that the RL gender of another person is of utmost importance to one third of Sl. When asked how you got that statistic, you pointed at a COMPLETELY different statistic. You are saying Apples and Orenges are both fruit, so Apples are Oranges. The stat that you pointed at (I think, as I haven't got a straight answer from you yet) is about people that like to have sex in SL (I guess... You're so vague, who can tell). Liking sex in SL does NOT equal giving a shit about whether the person on the other side of the screen is a boy or a girl. You also haven't answered: What makes me a noob? As for my "flamethrower", isn't this what you wanted, posting inflammatory posts as you do? And this: From: someone you have to keep things in context. people have preferences. for example, people prefer that my friends are who they say they are. people also have preferences in their partner. and yes some peoples preference does not include 60 yeard old men. for others it does.
gay is not an abomination, it's just not a lot of peoples choice. on the other hand i feel gay people who are looking for relationships in sl should be entitled to truthful relationships. we all know of the common theory of straight men posing as lesbians.
meeting of minds is a myth to me. i'm not christian, and i'm not a humanist. if minds were so distinct and privileged, why do people cut up and reshape their bodies. and if the internet is so devoid of the body then why do one third of all users engage it with their right hand only? Um. Is English your second language? Is that where the miscommunication is coming from? Gay is "not a lot of peoples [sic] choice"? Well done. Gay as a choice, just like straight is. Brilliant. And, just so you know, just because you don't believe in things, like "meeting of the minds", doesn't make your point valid. All I'm saying is speak for youself. Don't presume to speak for others, which you have done. Why am I a noob, again?

From: Mickey McLuhan Why am I a noob, again? Because you continue to fall for his bait, hook sinker and all? ^^; The miscommunication you refer to isn't a result of language barrier, it's result of no desire to communicate to begin with. Merely to get a rise out of you.

1) Doesn't bloody well MATTER what gender people are IRL. 2) Anyone who thinks it does, needs to get their head examined. */trollfeeding* Purses? Mine was $6, lightly used....to hold a claymore. It's black, it's sturdy, and it'll hold heavy crap without breaking. Now THAT is what I call a worthwhile purchase. Ya'll can go back to speculating and bitchin' now...

From: Jauani Wu Is there anyway to tell if the woman you are talking to is not really a man? or vice versa? Is Linden Lab considering adding gender verification to protect people from getting tricked into hooking up with the undesired gender of personal choice? This is of paramount importance to one third of all players! You're kidding, right? So, dare I ask, what about transexual people? If you're so worried about it, and someone won't tell you - why don't you distance yourself (if it's such a problem)? If LL ever decided to release (without option) any info on their private users, there would be a shit-storm, and to tell you the truth - I would be heavily persuaded to leave this world...permanently. We have our SL avatars, and we can choose to make them who/what we want. For some, this is an experience distanced from RL, and just because you're not sure who's on the other end of the connection doesn't mean everyone else has to give up anonymity for your insecurity. Sorry, jefe, don't plan on it panning out for you anytime soon. (PS - I believe you mean 'sex' not 'gender.')

I want to verify that in SL I am a transsexual man.... I never was a woman, but I did get a sex change operation to a man. And in RL, I am a gorean raccoon.

ROFL you guys (gals/whatever!) crack me up! My original avatar was a girl. Yes, I got multitudinous propositions from horny whatevers but ya know something that was refreshing? casual conversations sprang out from all directions! lots of people just wanted to talk, not necessarily get into my knickers. Ageism, sexism, race never raised its ugly head. SL smashed boundaries down in one fair swoop ... and someone wants to put them up again!

Uh, my av is male and I get those conversations too...
The question of what those barriers are and how they work SHOULD be interesting instead of fearful: there doesn't seem any doubt that tribalism is as inherent to humans as language (and I'd include griefing there too). You might as well wish for teleporting in RL as wish for an end to "isms".
(in RL I had a partner who could look Jamaican, Malay, or Indian - a real chameleon. Even Jamaicans - her actual ethnicity - would swear she was Malay, and we'd have bizarre conversations where they would end up accusing her of lying, in preference to admitting they had guessed wrong. In the midst of one racist incident, a bunch of guys had drunkenly been chanting "gook!", in response to which she took off her wig, replacing oriental-looking hair, with tight afro-caribbean curls. The bunch of guys rather suddenly ran out of collective script...
A whole lot of the time, those who complain about "isms" - race, sex, age, etc - are completely missing the point when they associate an insult with the detailed subject of the insult. It's not about you being black/female/fat/glasses-wearing/whatever - it's about the insult-giver hunting for a handle. They will perfectly readily switch handles if they need to: moving away from the handle they first grabbed (by changing gender online or losing weight or trying to change your accent) just gives them ANOTHER handle to grab, and hows them that they reached you)

Is there any way to tell if the gorean ageplaying raccoon you're talking to is really a gorean ageplaying raccoon? I met a gorean ageplaying raccoon the other day and we got into a relationship. Imagine my surprise and heartbreak when it turned out that he was actually NOT a gorean ageplaying raccoon, but a BDSM watersports opossum! I mean, come ON, Linden Labs. You HAVE to do something about this. It is of the utmost importance to five sixteenths of the furry gorean ageplaying population! How am I supposed to find the person I want to marry if I can't tell if they're into gor and ageplaying or not? How can I find my lifemate in a game if I can't tell what species they are. This is ridiculous. I demand that this be put in place now, or I'll be boycotting the teen grid... even though I'm 37.
There's a thought. Everyone's so worried about teens on the Adult grid being in danger of predators... what about the other way 'round? I know this is off-topic, but are there protections for the teens in the Teen Grid, stopping adults from going in?
Sorry. Coffee just kicked in as I was typing... And now, back to your regularly scheduled banter...
Edited to add:
Gummi, I love that post. Well done. One thing, though. I believe you are talking about racial ethnicity when you talk about ethnicity. I dig where you're coming from, but when talking about that, Jamaican really isn't an ethnicity.. like that. It's a cultural ethnicity, but it... the cultural aspect isn't what got confused with the Malay, it was the racial. D'you see where I'm coming from? I know it's kinda nitpicky, but I live in a place where absolute clarity is neccessary when talking about race. Sorry. Things get stuck in my head and I have to say something or it eats away at my brain... and there's little enough there as it is! *grin*
