The biggest drawback is when people teleport in while wearing a swim attachment - they shoot up to the ceiling with splashy sounds and flailing animations! :)
.....

If they happen to be wearing a Gorean Meter, they start to drown and end up in a GM capture bubble if they're not quick enough to remove it.

I do it a lot when building underwater or checking parcel boundaries.

The Black Sun club in Nexus Prime (or what's left of it) is an underwater build without specifically trying to look 'underwater'. The effect gives it a very unique ambience.

Thank you for a really interesting post.

Back when the Isles of Fatima were expanding, I had the urge to develop an underwater theme - sunken ruins, giant fish, mermaids, sea life and vegetation blah blah..... we installed a scuba animation, links to mer shops etc etc. with the intention of developing a "home" for those who might want to live as Merfolk. At that time there were a couple of sims devoted to that lifestyle, although I don't know if they've survived.

I had one person visit for all of 5 minutes - who never intended to "live" underwater anyway - who thought it was pretty cool.

Anyway, this made me think about how far out of our normal comfort zone we're willing to go. Plenty of people RP but is it just all above ground?

When I wee above ground, people tend to notice more.

I don't really like the foggy sight it gives you. Yet, houses aren't supposed to be built underwater. :P

I lived underwater for several months. With the right kind of build the fog isn't noticeable.

Piggie there's nothing wrong in feeling uncomfortable in underwater SL locations. Everyone is different.

Some are hard to see far in, some are hard to maneuver upward in, etc.

I like them, but mainly while wearing the mermaid getup and AO. :) Especially pretty underwater sims, are cool. There's something peaceful and outer-space-like about floating, weightless, in the blue.

It's not just that I can see the area around me is a bit darker/greener/blue than normal.

It's the fact that I "know" I'm in the water.

Crazy huh !!! :D

Crazy, yes.

My cellar is underwater because the lighting is impressively murky. The only issue I have with it is that the place looks flooded when I look down into it from the top of the steps.

But even that has it's uses: I drowned someone in it once.

Your fear is not surprising. Pigs can't swim, because if they try their trotters slash their throats open . . .

Pep ( . . . and all that good black pudding ingredient is wasted)

PS I know it's not true, but why allow facts to get in the way; no-one else in the forums seems to do so.

Argent Im working on an underwater station (Pisces Base 1) and would be very appreciative if you could contact me in world to offer a few hints on how you made you lighting work.

Thanks. MJ.

I described my build earlier. It basically comes down to small rooms, careful lighting, and adjusting people's expectations. For example, I made it rain (using particles) outside the house, so that people expected it to be foggy.

For the lighting, it was mostly a matter of experimenting until it "looked good". I used small low-intensity lights and adjusted them until the few places where you had a long line of sight had a relatively bright and high-contrast appearance. You could probably get the same effect with baked-in lighting.

Yes! That is the way I experience underwater sims as well. I feel very peaceful and relaxed - like the "world noise" is softened.

Now this may be because RL I was a synchronized swimmer, thus spent a LOT of time in and under the water for years. One of the ways I practiced breath control was going to the bottom of the 30 ft. diving well at the pool where I practiced and seeing how long I could stay under. The lack of noise and the blue of the water was a soothing experience.

Bonny Cove is the mermaid sim I visited but there are likely others.

I used to have a "pumped out" excavation like that, and there's a dry-dock in Nautilus - just north of the marketplace - that works the same way. It's done using invisiprims.

No, I built an in-world water pump just hidden from view in the near right-hand corner, pumping like crazy, and normally unless there's bad sim lag, it can keep the water out of the box pretty well.
