Groups do matter, so hide them.

I was peeping at someone and thinking they were an interesting sort to gaze upon so after a bit i decided to look into their profile and low and behold, odd ball fetish groups. I went from thinking "oh that person looks cool" to thinking "oh that person looks cool and is into some seriously weird things", and then naturally you tend to think that if you were friends with that person you would have very little in common.

I have some weird ass groups in my profile too, maybe :P, but if i do or did, i would hide them, that is for sure. I would not let them influence peoples opinions about me regarding something that never has to do with them.

Maybe it is shallow to judge someone by the groups they display in their profile, but the reality is that people judge, and if you don't want to be judged, then keep them hidden, i do i mean would. :D

Haven't any of these people seen Cinderella 1997 where Cinderella's stepmother (Bernadette Peters) tells her 2 daughter's before the ball "remember girl's, hide your flaws until after the wedding"?

Oh, and what is with using a group slot to tell people you are hiding groups. Why not just use the profile message box?

Maybe they want those groups to show they can find like minded people.

I am sure that is the case with many people. It is give and take. I guess if you want to find friends who like to be turned into hypnotized/mind controlled, latex sex dolls, then make those groups public, but some people for sure will be avoiding you because of it.

My profile is definitely geared to making certain people avoid me, so i can understand that.

They may also display these groups because they don't want to know people who are weirded out by them. Weeding out people you don't want to know is as important a part of socialization as attracting those who interest you.

I've never seen the point of hiding my groups, though since I'm maxed out I have to give a lot of thought to which ones I join in the first place.

The only drawback I've found to having "weird groups" in my profile now and then, before they get knocked out by something boring to which I have to belong, is that, at times, it seems to give total strangers the sadly mistaken idea I might want to do weird stuff with them.

The only group I have hidden is one I created to quickly communicate or share items with my alts. It's a very small group. I hid it so as not to give my alts' names away, though in truth I only log them in these days to air them out a little or to use them as models.

I thought this was the purpose for hiding groups.

I'm an avid profile reader and often scroll through a person's groups to get a sense of "who they are". My favorite the other day had the standard "My groups are hidden, kthxbai" group along with about a dozen more groups. Fail!

i have the groups i want people to see in my profile and the ones i don't want them finding me at hidden..they are not fetish things but they are my home sim and a few places i like to hide out..

as far as fetishes and stuff like that..thats the thing i'll hide in RL but in here i don't care what people think..if they don't like anything in my groups and make an opinion from that .so be it..no loss to me ;)

All very good points.

I've learned that an image conscious individual does not necessarily mean they are the sort I'd wish to spend time with. The reverse is also true -- some individuals put more effort into relationships and their mental pursuits than they do into their image (sacrilege, I know!).

The only groups I hide are private land management groups populated by my alts. Maybe that's because I don't belong to any off-beat latex doll fetish groups - perhaps I should find some and look for some new friends!

Don't forget that many of use have group memberships in order to manage shops as one example.

If someone is being judged based on their group memberships, that says more about the profile diver than the owner of the profile.

I remember about 1 - 1 1/2 yrs back when there was a server bug for about a half day that allowed hidden groups to be seen. I found out a few interesting things about many people I know.

Managing the Profile box is a no win thing: whatever you say or show there, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, depending on who's progging about in your pixels.

I say forget about it. Folks can't risk a little chat getting to know you, best they go right-click somebody else.

I disagree, Ephraim, but since our disparate attitudes represent independently self-fulfilling prophecies, there is little point in arguing. ;)

Why are people so afaid of show they are into the most natual and fun and hapynes making grups. The sex groups ?

Is like its more ok to be in combat groups there are about weapen and kill people, then the life giving sex groups.

Meybe its becorse its the same in RL the human race think its better to make war and fight then make love. !!

And by the way, if some dont like my groups in SL, then they dont like me, but more there own limit moral, and want other to be like them. I am just glad not to have them as a friend :-)

Take care to all

Here's another take on hiding group memberships, even if they're not devoted to sniffing grandma's week-old used Depends:

Increasingly your online activities are investigated by potential or sometimes even current employers. I'm sure everybody's heard of people who have had their Myspace or Facebook pages examined when they've applied for jobs. Yes, it does happen.

Well, it's becoming more likely that they will also be able to find out who you are in Second Life too, through things like new SL and Facebook cooperation for example. Most of the time this will be due to the fact that somebody volunteered necessary info that allows their RL identity to be tied to their avatar, true, but however it's happened, it is happening.

So if you've got groups visible that could be a problem related to jobs, credit applications, even marriage proposals or current marriages, you'd best hide them, no matter what the groups are.

Hid my groups over a blogging psychopath with a grudge against me and the chronies droning along in the bandwagon. (=_=)

Still hidden. Still in all of them. Still dealing with shouts from the wagon. (=_=)y
