Holy fuck. I was just talking about friendly chatting on voice.. not virtual dating or sex.

Maybe i should have said "shy", I think I offended too many people with the word 'insecure'.

If I was a girl in second life, I WOULDN'T USE VOICE. You'd have PMs out the ass nonstop for 5 years.

Never mind what would be out your ass........

This discussion is a child's story compared to the knock down drag outs we used to have when voice was first announced and implemented. Such good times they were.

Oh yes, those were scary threads. This is a mild aftershock at best.

I don't really like voice, not even to listen to. Personal taste, really. Funnily enough, though, I was really afraid that SL would become a voice only sort of place but it didn't. I guess I'm not the only one who finds it annoying (again-- *personal* taste).

It's been what, two years now? And in those two years, I've never had anyone be rude to me because I have voice off. Then again, I tend to hang about in polite circles, and am not into SL snookums.

I had one discussion that went "Whose alt are you?" "Um, my own?" "Prove it on voice!" "Um, what, I don't do voice, I don't have a mike." "Bye!" followed by me being kicked and banned from the parcel.

I STILL have no idea who the hell they thought I was.

Prove it on voice....LOL. Don't those idiots realize how simple it is to disguise your voice, adopt an accent or speech pattern, especially if it doesn't involve a gender change? They have such a false sense of security over it all. I'd love to see how many people have fooled them successfully.

Excuse b - I have a bad connection.. if your connection is fast enough to do SL, it's fast enough to do voice over SL.

That's not entirely correct - I connect using satellite internet, and while it's not specifically supported by LL, it works reasonably well for connecting to SL. Voice down is not a problem, but voice up is, mainly due to variable ping time (which voice programs hate) and low transmit signal strength. I can't voice in SL, or Yahoo or MSN, but oddly enough Skype is no problem.

I'd love to use voice, my English accent would come in quite useful for chattin' up the birds at some of the clubs, and I'd use it shamelessly *grins*

I make no generalizations or assumptions about others that don't/won't voice,in fact I never even think about it............

I like Voice. I seldom use it though.

Mostly I like to hear other's voices. And I love some of the accents!!

Voice has also taught me how useless High School Language classes were, when I came across a French sim with voice enabled. I could pick out "words" but not much else. No one was talking about having a Red Pencil or Walking to A Store. WTF??? ;)

The problem with Voice though, is you have 50-70 year old's on here, looking like 18-20 somethings. Their voice & speech gives away their age, breaking the illusion. Not to mention the male/female role reversal stuff. HEH! I never knew a friend of mine was a gay male till I heard him on Skype!!! Was a bit of a shock!

Understandable. I've been hit on by teens & 20-somethings in RL till I start talking and they realize I'm older than I look. LOVE the look on their faces!! ;)

So, I've been using voicechat a lot lately.. and it just seems like out of twenty people with voice on that I bump into, only one will speak. Why is that?

They might be at work. They might be at home but supposed to be doing something more 'serious' than chatting to strangers on the interwebs. They might be the opposite gender of their av and not want it shouted around. They might like to listen to others but have a speech impediment or some other reason they abhor talking themselves. They might be shy. They might feel funny talking to their computer. They might not have time to talk. They might like talking only to people they know. They might have sized you up as someone who wanted to talk about topics they were not interested in, or who'd talk too short or too long for their liking.

Some people might see it in the way retired persons used to listen to the police scanner or ham radio or what was that other thing - CB radio. Something to be entertained by passively.

And some might not know it was on, as others have said.

I remember this one day, I had voice on at a club, and these darling 'tinies' were dancing in a group - only they all were on voice and had a serious case of whiskey and cig voice! It was not quite matching up. Lol. It was nice that they were all having fun though - drunk and giggly, basically. They just all sounded like Bea Arthur after two packs of unfiltered.

And I can't help but giggle any time I hear a dainty blond av come out with a voice that's deeper than Darth Vader's - I mean, it's not PC but that's a bit humorous.

I get compliments on my voice but I do not go on voice any more, not since I've heard about the pinging can be done.

I was kinda surprised, watching SL tv the other day, that some of the dainty blonde female avs being interviewed had deep barrel chested male voices, and they could care less. More power to 'em but I still felt about twelve listening I'm afraid. For a minute, anyway.

I came across someone in RP that insisted on using Voice and or webcam. Granted it was an Adult RP, and he freely admitted to "playing at home", but I wondered why he was even in SL then. He could just be looking at porn and get the same result.

But then he'd have to pay, see. That's really what those types hope for - free pr0n girls doing their bidding. They troll for noobs mostly, and as the OP said, pester them to death, at least for a while, til they find someone else to latch onto.

Thought of something that used to bug me when I had voice on - people who left their mic open during their RL phone calls or while tv/radio was on nearby, or they were shouting at kids, or dogs, or spouses...ugh. I don't miss that.

I used to leave voice on all over SL just to hear what was going on. I do kind of miss hearing conversations in all sorts of accents but not THAT much.

PS Isn't anyone else on forums right now? Lol.

This guy was a riot. He was actually a good RPer. I told him I didn't own a microphone, he gave me several recommendations and suggested I go out right then and buy one. I told him it was too late to do so in my time zone, he offered to go out to his 24 hour WalMart, buy one and FedEx it to me COD, ready to play the next night.

My SL character is a cat, however in RL I am *gasp* a human. On top of that, one who has multiple accents (England, southern US, 2 from New England, plus affectations from random places) at the same time. Then I further complicate it by usually communicating with Deaf people.(

Ah. I hadn't even thought of that. So of course, that means *all* deaf people are imposters who plan to hit on innocents...

As a long time gamer, I started with voice (so to speak(pardon the pun)), sitting around a table with likeminded individuals. As I grew older, distances came between us and I found my interests not so popular. Then I discovered the mush/mux/muck genre of games and rediscovered the beauty of text.

SL first grabbed my attention and I thought it would be like a graphically enhanced mush, so I jumped on it. Much to my disappointment, it wasn't at all what I'd expected. But it did have it's redeeming features, so I stayed on.

No, I still don't use voice. I'm not comfortable speaking with people I've never met and tend to stammer or lose words entirely. but text, the actual crafting of language is another matter. Not only am I capable of expressing myself in as eloquent or simple a manner as I choose, it allows me to filter out those I'd rather not have dealings with. And u no who u r. Voice is for RL. I don't require it in SL.

LOL! I usually have to tell 20-somethings my age and then they are taken by surprise by it. Not that I really mind being considered one of their peers. :)

I spent 3 hours at the car dealership yesterday, in a room with half a dozen good ol'boys talking smack about their trailer hitches and their 4-wheelers.

30 minutes later, I'm on a nude beach in SL, taking french lessons with a Swedish guy, from two French women, and a German guy. A guy from Denmark was listening in, and tripping out over my Southern French. Two very Sleek, European looking women arrived, and I was sure they were going to break into French, too....then they busted out into a wholesome Midwestern accent! Can't beat that!

I LOVE hearing all that. Amazing.

If I lived alone, I'd probably speak a lot more in Voice. However, I live with someone else who just simply doesn't get it, so rather than repeat -

Me (in response to someone in Voice): "Yeah, I know."
Other Person in the Room: "Huh? What?"
Me: "I'm *talking in SL*."

- every two minutes, I just type. (Of course, there are also many times when OtherPerson is busy or sleeping and doesn't need to be bothered by my talking in SL.)

If you put -novoice into SL properties, it will disable voice. Your voice chat tab will say something like "voice not available". Then you'll know it's off.

I never use voice for anything. Text is better.

I hate voice. It seems completely out of tune with the silent world I associate with in sl. Voice is not intimate enough fo rme here = or maybe it is too intimate. I live alone. I dont like disembodied voices coming to me from my speakers that ar edirected to me. Hav eyou ever had sex with someone on sl whose voice kinds hums and groans in the darkness from 8 speakers? No thanks.

Most often it is used by insecure men who need validation that I am a woman. But when you start voicing sex in sl, you sound like your doing phone sex. And I always have the uneasy feeling I'm being recorded. Same as the men who demand or whine for "just one rl pic" - nope - there's my profile and that should be enough.

Voice is for the illiterate who cant write the texts and subtexts of this avatar world.

and saying that is JUST as judgmental as saying... if you don't use voice you are hiding something. Its a option, some love it, some hate it, some are indifferent, everyone has their own reasons and all are valid ones.

Don't mistake typos for a lack of literacy. Some of just think faster than we type, and we refuse to go to text talk, even tho that is gr8 u no, it makes u look 2kool 4 skool.

Voice makes multi-tasking easier, especially when building or taking photos.

Actually, I think we'll have a better chance of winning the lottery than figuring out the information from the Lindens.

Curious about the Emerald Viewer and all the features?

LOL! DOnt matter to me! I once talked to a receptionist who had the HOTTEST english accent. When I went in for the interview, I realized she wasn't so hot. But her voice was enough to make me thing "naughty" things :)

I will do voice, but most of the time I have it just turned off because I usually have sound turned off in SL entirely. Unless I'm at a pub/club/etc with a music stream, and in such case I'm there to listen to the music and not someone mouth-breathing and wheezing and munching cheetos through an open mic.

Also, off-topic side note to DJs... match your levels already! Nothing quite like hearing the music playing at a reasonable volume and then suddenly getting blasted with an over-loud and distorted "HELLLLLLLOOOOOOOO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS FOR COMING I'M TAKING REQUESTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLAH BLAH BLAH" blowing out my eardrums in between each frikkin' song.
