That is one good thing about being in the tech business. There are more OS disks floatig around I can always get a copy of the version I need.

And who cares about the legality. Pep (Well, Microsoft.) There is nothing illegal about using different installation media as long as you use the CD Key that was supplied for your computer. Often times the CD Key is available because it is attached to the computer, even if the installation media is missing. Also, if your computer works at all you can find your Windows installation key by running Belarc's free Advisor software that you can obtain here... http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html _____________________

There's always Linux.... just sayin'. Tried it, the .iso was 715MB and I only seem to get hold of 700MB CDs. I have now made another installation on my computer, on one of my gaming drives somehow. I found an .iso and burnt myself a disk of Win XP. The anti-virus and spy ware got it without a problem, the problem was that some how Windows and Second Life depended on that infected file and I couldn't get Internet without it. So deleting, renaming, etc just crippled me but was what the anti's were made for. Anyone else think the conspiracy theory about Anti-virus companies is true? They are the only ones to profit from viruses. There are thousands, possibly too many for individuals to make. Other operating systems like Linux that don't have Anti-Virus don't have viruses either. |

Also, before scanning for viruses, malware, trojans, etc....
DISCONNECT the computer from the Internet!!!! Unplug the Ethernet cable. I've seen viruses & the like re-download themselves to another location when they're being removed. _____________________

I just accidently started Vista64 today on my dualboot msachine and it apparently downloaded and installed 30 security fixes during shutdown, pretty impressive seeing for the last 12 months it's continued to tell me there's no network or modem hardware connected which is why I gave up on it.

There's about a zillion ways a virus might be hiding itself in a freshly installed program and using a randomly generated file name to hide the bulk of the virus. If your system is so compromised that a complete virus scan doesn't eliminate it, it's probably time to back up your data files, reformat the hard disk, and reinstall everything from CDs or fresh downloads. No, I'm not taking the piss. When I was a system admin, we regularly had to reimage user's computers (laptops, mostly) when they'd managed to catch something nasty on a hotel WLAN. This. Today's viruses are some really nasty critters and have proven adept at hiding from even the best of virus scanners. The only way to be truly sure of being rid of a virus - particularly one that can fool legitimate software into thinking they need this virus in order to run - is to completely wipe your hard drive and start over - and then admonish yourself for having loose standards for what you choose to download off the Internet. This is why I choose to run Linux. _____________________

I need to try avoid the format, I lost my Windows media disk. You still have the CD key somewhere, right? Like on a label on your computer case? If so, then just borrow a friend's installation disk. As long as you use your own key, you are legally in the clear. _____________________

You still have the CD key somewhere, right? Like on a label on your computer case? If so, then just borrow a friend's installation disk. As long as you use your own key, you are legally in the clear. You pretty much have to use your own key. They do not put them with the media. And you also need to get the same version. XP home will not work with an XP Pro key. Also, even the service packs need to be the same for both key and media. And a final option ... you might be able to contact the computer manufacturer and get a replacement set of disks. They usually charge a small fee, like 10 bucks or so, but it is pretty cheap. _____________________
