I usually only post my machinima bits on the Machinima forum, but thought I'd cross post this as the subject about driving vehicles in Second Life does come up in Resident Answers. This old truck is my favorite road machine. From the video you can see that cruising down SL highways is actually possible. =) * * * Trucking in Second Life. As anyone knows who's tried, driving in Second Life is a challenge. Towards a better experience, I heavily modified one of Asylum Arcadia's freebie trucks by rewriting the vehicle parameters. It handles the roads better than any other vehicle I've driven. Let's go trucking...: http://blip.tv/file/1074463- Infrared

Great stuff! You were certainly hitting some speed toward the end there *g*
I really must check out the Machinima forum more often.

The roads and the builds along them must be an eye-opener for those who are used to the newer, messier continents.

Any chance you will be releasing this enhanced script in any way? I also have that truck and would love better handling

This is beyond cool! I'm having flashbacks to 70's movies though, and my CB radio (still works!)...

Wow...great to get some responses. Thx...
Some replies...
@Blot: I run red lights when I see them. =)
@Gabriele Graves: I need to review the script; as I made changes that might be too specific with what I do with the truck. I can tell you that the biggest improvement you can make if you want to drive long distance is dampen the steering. A lot. Asylum's freebie vehicles are designed to turn (rotate left/right) very quickly. This makes it difficult to drive straight. Small adjustments and you're off-road.
These are numbers I use for the truck's steering:
if(level & (CONTROL_RIGHT|CONTROL_ROT_RIGHT)) { angular_motor.x += 100; angular_motor.z -= 100; } if(level & (CONTROL_LEFT|CONTROL_ROT_LEFT)) { angular_motor.x -= 100; angular_motor.z += 100; }
@KaiLastOfTheBrunnenG Macdonald: Don't know about a series; but I certainly plan to do more trucking videos. Mostly to inspire people to try driving. When I first tried driving over a year ago, it was frustrating. It was no fun at all. It's getting better.
@Astrid Schwade: I capture clips with Fraps. Then I usually open them one by one in VirtualDub (freeware) to trim them into the pieces I want, then import to Premiere Pro 2.0.
@Desmond Shang: "got a good copy on that!"
And here's interesting tidbit: I was an 18-wheeler driver in RL years ago. So the vision-energy behind the video is largely from recollection of those days.

Fantastic video btw, I only got chance to see it once I got home but I was impressed at how good it was

If only sl had infrastructure, so we needed trucks to move stuff about. that would be great. Does anyone have a script to make a truck properly artic, as theres no fun in going round a corner by turning in the middle.

I believe that would need the much asked for Flexible Couplings which would be an extension of the flexi functionality we have today. Flexi's can only be attached on one end today but if they could be attached at both ends then inverse kinematics would be possible and the truck could be made artic.

Hmm oh well, have to stick to rigids then
but still we need to work on the turning, so it turns by the steering axle not the center point, im sure some decent scripter could work that out
