I can't address all of the club issues except for one and that is making people feel welcome. Back when I used to actually go to clubs I was happy and felt welcomed when the hostess welcomed me by name amd I tended to return there. When I went to clubs where I wasn't welcomed by name, and the "regulars" were all having a somewhat private conversation I felt unwelcome and never returned.
I have never paid much attention to the build of the club as I felt that the people there were more important.
A last comment about jazz. If I see that word in a club's description I avoid it like the plague along with any mention of 80's music.
See how hard it is to please us?

I agree that the hostess should make all feel welcome but it should go beyond just saying "Hello (avatar's name)" A true hostess should be able to guide the conversation a little so you don't end up with a bunch of strangers going "Woot Woot!" "Hi" "brb" "good bye", etc. Yes regulars might be in IMs, and why not - they've found a great place to meet up with friends - but if you want the ones who pop in to come back, you have to ask questions in chat and introduce people. Isn't that what hostesses and barmaids do in RL? As for music, I listen to my own that way I'm always pleased...

I can't tell you what will make you succeed but I can tell you what I'd do if I had a club In addition to the great ideas about making people feel welcome and low-lag (those have GOT to be the most important things), I would try to create a strong club identity that extended to the patrons --- try to make them feel the club is special and they are special for knowing about it. 1. Have a dress code. Women have lots of great fancy clothes and no place to wear them. Also, tho, have a box fof free acceptable clothing for men and women at the door. 2. Every night, have the DJ or host award one person the "You Caught <club name's> Eye" award. Have the prize be something unusual and great, and branded with the club name. (Like a special dress/suit that you've commissioned from a well-known designer). Can be for a great ensemble, an unusual avatar, great anims ... the point is to get people who come to the club to really try to win it. When you award it, don't just announce it, bring the person into a spotlight and do a little interview, just a few sentences. Put a picture of last night's winner on a big marquee board in the club. 3. Commission a couples dance and a single dance from a good animator JUST for your club. 4. I would have a sploder set up just for people born in the last month. When it splodes, it gives a few lindens to everyone who qualifies, and also gives out a box of special really good clothing freebies subtly branded with the club logo to one lucky newbie. 5. I would have my hosts/hostesses pull loners into conversations with each other. 6. No "best of ..." competitions. 7. Get DJs with distinctive personalities, and promote them to death.

hard to say nowadays, too many rely on hype and nakedness to get people in. as Conan says, get a decent Dj who knows thier stuff, and hold an event every now and again. as for the jazz clubs, my Sl Bro had to close his. He had nothing but pure Jazz/Swing and no one came, and the ones that did, argued that Monk and His peers were not Jazz. go fig. also hire a host/hostess!! the Dj will have thier hands full hyping the crowd and handling requests, and in im with the club owner/manager. make sure your host/ess has people skills and can carry more than one converstion at a time, and keeps a cool head in times of crisis and a sense of humor is a must!! in hiring DJs: make sure they can play more than one genre. that way you have back up in case a Dj can't make it. stress variety. no one likes the same thing every night. i wish you luck OP in Your venture

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I really always liked the idea of a speakeasy kinda club. Or i agree with the ideas for a jazz club. I think everyone is right in saying that it needs to be different in that it needs to be good. Decent dance balls, music, low lag and good surroundings. You can't really go wrong if you take pride in customer service and if you care that your customers will enjoy themselves rather than just about traffic and making money. Good Luck

Blues and Bluegrass! I've only been to one decent Blues club and it's one of my faves. I saw Derbor there once, too! Or how about a speakeasy/flapper club (1920's/30's) or a swing club (I'm thinking WWII era)? Those would be cool as well. Just don't do the Elvis/50's thing. So old, ugh.

Right before the Hangout Project came about, I was toying with the idea of an Elegant Art Deco inspired Swing Jazz club, along the lines of the Rainbow Room, atop the RCA(GE) Building in Rockefeller Center. But time and finances make that really impractical for me.
