Repeated Crashing, 4 Re-Installs, 1st time ever?

Do you get to run long enough to remove your attachments?

Have you tried logging in at different locations?

Did your system work properly for months?

Have you tried reseating your video card?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your video card? Not just updating the drivers.

System restore is something to do at the beginning of the problem solving process in Windows XP. The other things one does can prevent the system restore from succeeding. It's a bit disappointing when system restore fixes things because you end up with no idea what the problem was, but one does get over that.

This thread inspired me (curse it!) to update my drivers when I saw nvidia released an update right before Christmas. That may not be the problem, but Windlight is suddenly looking like old SL water - that blank bright blue - except transparent. I want an undo button!

This time around, I can't even get the loading/welcome screen to show up



I would if I could get that login screen to let me in...usually I log into Pooley to avoid our usual random Grid problems, but the Client crashes to fast for me to even hit Enter and connect to Home



Yep. When I first made this old thread, it had worked fine since I signed up...this time again it was fine for months, then one day *blink* and exit



I did, but since I got nothing better to do, I'll do it again, my box is still open anyway



Not just yet THIS time around...but my next Graphics Card should get here in the mail tommorrow, or the next day in the mail...so I will be swapping it out.



Amen to that...XP is killing me. I might have changed something by just exiting the client and "going about my business" after the initial *blink* out...but my system restore didn't take me back to my original state. It was worthless. (Not the first time I've had that happen with an XP box either ) ...but like you said we get over it.

If I DO find the actual definitive concrete cause, effect and solution to this problem I'm definitely going to try and get it added to the sticky FAQ and submit it (multiple times) to the Knowledge Base...I have seen this happen to too many users.

earlier today i had a huge issue with exactly what you have experienced, Xio. it went on for about 45 minutes. i didn't do anything about it except wait it out. after that glitchyness passed, everything was fine. i hope you get as lucky.

Have you done a manual regedit check for every entry that says "Second Life" and either deleted it or chickened out?

You can access SL on your laptop, right, so it shouldn't be an attachment. But it wouldn't hurt to remove them all anyway.

Have you run the Windows XP Recovery Console and done a repair? (Boot from XP CD, select R for repair)

Have you done a complete scan of your hard drive for sl relatead things and removed anything and any folders that would make sense to?

Are you starting Second Life from a shortcut that you made or from a shortcut that SL produces in the installation process?

Have you tried the regular SL client, the release candidate, and the firstlook windlight client?

How about chkdsk /f and reboot? or even chkdsk /r and reboot? /r will check the disk for bad sectors so if you do that be prepared to wait a while. that's might be a bedtime thing.

If you're crashing before you even log in, maybe somebody could spot something with the SecondLife.log file.. Can you post it? Should be under docs & settings, in the logs directory.

There may be RL info in there, like your PC login name - edit it and scan through it to make sure it's clean before posting it.

Nothing there. It's clean of all oh so horrifying and monstrous pieces of text containing Second Life.



Hmm... guess it can't hurt for now, it's a wireless connection so out came the USB modem & it's "clear"

I used the shortcut made by the Install Wizard automatically.



This is an old thread that we couldn't 100% "solve" the first time around, so when I say "this time around"...I mean this week, as opposed to back then, early in the Spring or whenever. I just went to start SL and this happened, and kept happening the next few times I tried to "crank it up", so I started troubleshooting.



Again, I deleted that whole folder. I figured ANY reference to a past SL installation that I can find needs to go, so I can find the root of the problem.



Yep...and the Windlight Client gave me a message saying that my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run Second Life. It's been running SL fine for months, just like the last time this happened, so I re-started the Windlight Client just out of curiosity and it exited before the load screen, just like the normal client.

Yeah, this would be a very nice bit of info to get. Based on timing, I smell a network driver/settings/services problem, but it would be real interesting to peek at the viewer's dying gasp.

It's like that for me too - but if I uncheck the "pretty sky", I get the "pretty water" - I just can't have both at once!

It sure does; that's why I delete it after every install if I have the same problem logging into the client.

For many people, they cannot get water and sky to show correctly in windlight.

In the graphics tab, check the Custom box, this will release the seperate controls. In SKY detail, slide the control to the far right, if the sky looks banded with black lines, move the slider one increment at a time, until they dissapear (there are about 16 increments, so move it slowly), this will then sync with your GC refresh speed.

Turn off the avatar imposter 'feature' all this does is make avatars look like a YouCrude movie as you move away from them, although that distance isnt adjustable and very crude, it can make even nearby avatars suddenly go blocky.

Have Post Production Processes turned up full, this will untilise your GC power to render textures etc, before they load, rather than the mulitple progressive rezzing.

Only use the water reflective feature if you actually have enough water in your shot/view to make use of it, otherwise its a waste of resources.

In 'World, Environmental, Environmental Editor' set the time of day, lighting effects you want, cloud cover etc, and save that as a template. Each time you login, you simply need to load that template that suits your GC.

The purpose of pointing out the log file is recreated is to suggest reading the log file to see what it says inside. That you've delete the previous ones doesn't prevent looking at the newly created ones.

Here's a thing to try - copy the shortcut used to start your beta grid client. Edit the target field in the shortcut so that it attempt to log into the regular grid.
It would end up something like
"C:\Program Files\SecondLifeBetaHavok\SecondLifeBetaHavok.exe" -set SystemLanguage en-us

The purpose of this sort experiment is just to see what happens.
