From: Rebecca Proudhon You can keep suffering or you can do the painful thing return your computer and have all components replaced till it is solved and then reinstall windows and take the other steps I mentioned regarding the prevention of old driver files from getting back in there. I had to send my system back mulitple times.
Sadly, I bought the computer at Fry's. They are notorious for their non-service. It's an HP computer, so I'd end up having to pay the shipping back and forth to get it to them. Although, at this rate, I have GOT to do something. The computer is just getting worse and worse, and nothing pisses me off more

For purposes of getting SL to work on the computer without spending money, could you put a Linux on it in a dual boot manner?
I put Linux on my XP machine without too much trouble.
The Wubi installer made it pretty easy. I did have to ask for help here in the Linux forums in order to get SL to run.
If you haven't already tried for an exchange at Fry's it might be worth trying.

Hm, with Linux, wouldn't I have to learn a whole new OS? Does Linux work with Vista? I bought the machine at Fry's, and then later on, took it to Geek Squad and had them install the 8800GX card that I bought. I'm pretty sure I have the original card that went in it...I think, but I don't know if they'd refuse to take it back because it had been opened up, and it's been more than 90s days. Frankly, I don't even know if I have a warranty on it, although it seems it came with a year, but again, it's been opened, and I think that voids the warranty. If I had only known I'd have this issue, I'd have ordered a Dell and gotten XP put on it. I think I'm going to move everything off that machine to online storage, no matter what else I do. It'll be easier to make a decision if I don't have to worry about my data.
