Hi everyone. I wonder if any of you can help me. My sister just started playing SL and is morbidly freaked out by the default av appearance even after she's played with the sliders, however she has limited money to run out and buy skins, shapes, hair, etc. I know I've read in these forums about gracious vendors that offer discounted items for newbies, but for the life of me I can't find them in past threads. She found some free and cheap clothing so she should be fine there.

Any clue where I could refer her for inexpensive or free appearance items? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There are a lot of free skins and shapes out there that are really nice!! Check some of the blogs like FabFree for them...IM me inworld if you'd like me to help her - I have a lot of stuff to give her and have a notecard with designer freebies and tips on finding quality free stuff. And if she needs it, I'll slip her 50L to get her going!

The nightclub girl default av has an old Nomine skin...it's not too bad until she finds something she likes better. Sin Skins offers a newbie pack for avs under 30 days. Calla and Gurl 6 have free hair...so does ETD, but the sim is down for a couple of weeks. Free Dove and Sarah Nerd's Freebie Paradise are good places to start looking for clothes and such. Linden Lifestyles has a Jill in the Box kit with some decent items, including an AO.

Also, this site does a pretty good job of tracking designer-specific freebies: http://fabfree.wordpress.com/

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

freebie beach has a skin and some clothes that are a bit different than the freebies all over. tiffany skin and some clothes will get her set up until she can save for that original skin that makes her feel unique.

her shape will look good with that skin, and she can tweak her shape to match the skin, so she feels comfy until..... blah blah... you know.

Everyone I see that remotely looks like they are in need of upgrades I freely hand out. I have enough stuff to make your sister look like a model :) I'm usually online around 4:30 PM Second Life time, have her IM me.

The Sin Skin freebies are quite good and come in a variety of options--i didn't know they were still available but i used to take so many people there. Free Dove has at least one shape set, or did when I was last there, that included a bunch of shape variations. They also have a skin set with the CS Passport Malibu skin that gets so many good reviews.

MIA has a store called something like Free 4 U and it has many freebie shapes, skins and hair, and the age of the AV age doesn't matter there. If you cannot find it, let me know and I'll dig out my landmark to it.

Tete a pied has a free skin at the back of their store for newbies. Gurl6 has a free hair offer for newbies and a lot of 1L or discounted hair. Sirena has a 1L hair as does a few other places.
If you go to Freedove, they have a lot of stuff and my alt has been completely kitted out from there and from the free for newbie stuffs. On the wall in one of the corners there are a lot of the free for newbie things, where you fill a notecard and send it to the creator. I think you do have to go to the store though. Its worth a look. :)

I also recommend Goldie Locks for hair. She has an area in her reduced item area with 2 of her current styles at low price for new persons. Also on the other side of that are some styles full packs of all the colors reduced to 10L, and the other prices in that section usually range in the 50L area.

Good advice so far. You said she's been playing with the sliders and hates her shape as well. I'd suggest she get a few skins she likes before really working on a shape. No matter how good a shape you have, the default OI skin you're born with looks bad, so it's hard to get a good idea of whether your shape is ok. Put the skin on first and design a shape around it. That's the opposite of what a lot of people do - they get a shape they like and then demo skins to make sure it looks good on their shape, but since your sister doesn't like her shape, she might as well work back to it.

Of course, there are some great shape designers out there, at least one of whom is a regular here and is very talented. If your sister gets frustrated, I don't think a shape is terrible expensive in the grand scheme of things. Remember, we are only talking about a couple USD for anything.

Seconded. I lived awhile with the free malibu skin, set up my shape, but got tired of the "shocked" look I had. Plus I wanted me some eyebrows and not the thin lines most skins have. Took a bit of looking around, finally found a skin I liked. Popped it on and behold, I looked nothing like I wanted. Skin really affects the overall as Trout said. A few slider adjustments later I declared victory, and no longer had that 24/7 shocked expression. :p

I wish I had asked around before I started 'experimenting', skins especially can be pricy.

She might want to go to Free Dove if it is still out there. I still wear the free CS Malibu skin that I got from there. It is a great one. I finally broke down a few months back and bought myself a shape because someone wanted me to, but the thing looks almost like I did just by using the sliders.

Just send you sister my way, I'll take care of her. We can go shopping for skins together and I'll keep the preditors away.

BTW, is she cute? Funny? Do you think she would mind helpping me shop for pose balls?

JUST KIDDING!!!!
I'm actually a decent sort of guy ... for a boytoy.

Free Dove is still around and probably the best single place to work on new and free looks. There is also Nat's newbie place with some useful items like AO's and free hair vouchers from a couple of top end hair stores. Free for players less than 30 days old. If all else fails, drop by the Forum Cartel hangout any evening. There are several good freebie packs there plus people willing to help you find anything else you need.

Since the sim is down for a couple of weeks and I personally love ETD, most of the freebie and discounted hair is also listed here:
