I am fairly new to SL and am tired of being razzed about my newb skin, so I have been shopping for something better. Wow, there are so many places to go to and different styles of skins. I think that I found one that I would like to buy, but it cost's 4800 L. This seems like a lot to me, but it is a way cool sexy male skin. I have picked up a few of the free skins in my adventures, but they don't seem to give me the look that I am after. Can any of you give me any suggestions for reasonably priced attractive male skins?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanx, Caleb

I bought a set of a skin about 6 months ago, i.e. the same skin but with 5 different types of facial hair for around 4800. Have you tried IC Skins, you may find something there a liitle cheaper if your happy for a one facial hair look

Go to search and type dawnshop, then on the right side go to male starter pack (i think it's the name), you'll find a nice skin, otherwise send me a IM and tonight when I login I'll give you some free skins

The one I was considering also has facial hair options, I just want to make sure that I am not spending too much.

Go to the Forum Hangout and pick up the new residents pack. There are plenty of LMs for good freebie skins. Can't comment on the quality of the male ones, but if they can't be any worse than the LL choices.

/me inserts shameless plug for the NCI freebie wall... There are a couple good male skins there. And while you're there, ask around, there are people that offer noobie makeovers for free too. (^_^)
Heh... actually... that's the only reason I have any male avatar items... I don't think I've even worn one ever. (=_=)y

Honestly Caleb, no, if you get the facial hair options and it is not a single skin, and you end up looking like want to look...I want to say average higher end skins are around 1000-1200 lindens or so for a single one.

The Abyss has some really nice male skins, but I'm not sure how much they are.
If you buy a single one, instead of the say '5 in a pack', a good one will be in the range of 1000 - 2000 $L.

That makes sense, my wife paid 1200 for her skin, and the pack I am looking at has 5 plus facial hair. Thanx!

Are you sure that's for one skin and not a package of several with the various facial hair options? When I began a year ago, the going price for a nice female skin was in the 1500L range or so. I've used the same skin for a year (love it) so definitely got my lindens worth.

Thanx, Caleb Well... different people think different things are sexy... AVid has one I rather like..but that's just me (Pale, goth, etc). And Nomine has a rather large selection, pretty good quality, and is very affordable last I remember. (Under 1000 L$ a skin if I remember correctly)

MrCaleb, I am not sure if Sin Skins has male skins, but the female skins are all 199L, and are quite nice...

The Dante male skin averages at around 1500L$ per individual skin, and comes in something like five or six skintones. From memory, each skintone has about eight or ten facial hair, eyeliner etc options to choose from, although I can't remember how much each of the skintone fatpacks cost. (It's been a while since I bought mine!) It's available from Naughty Island.
As for freebies, that depends on whether you want a rugged look or a more 'pretty' look. For the prettier, smoother skins, try Eloh Eliot's free male skin at Evocative Free Designs (Lapointe and Bastchild), Style Your Destiny's 'Belen Camping Skin' (available when you buy any 1L$ male shape from the freebie section of the store) or the Riot freebie skin at Fabulously Free in Talisman.
For the rugged look, check out some of the better resell stores for the Michael Photorealistic Skin (also known as 'Cody'), or the Steve Photorealistic Skin (also known as 'Skin realismos,feces,pelos...'). The Michael skin is doubly useful if you don't want to bother with prim or grown hair, because the skin itself has a decent buzzcut hairstyle. Never pay for either of those skins (some resell stores will try to rip you off for them). Try The Free Union at Chromex; I'm pretty sure I saw them free in there a while back.

Thanx everyone! I will definitly be checking out those spots that you have suggested.
Now I have another question about shapes, will any skin fit any shape? If I get a different skin do I need to get a shape that fits it? I don't want to go buy a skin and have it not look like the photo that prompted me to buy it.

Caleb Any skin is possible to go on any shape. You could put a female skin on a male shape if you really wanted to. But some shapes don't look good with some skins, period. My personal recommendation is to find a skin you really like, and then apply a full perms shape (One from your library works well) and basically create your own shape, tailored to your likes and dislikes, as well as your skin. It takes some time to get it looking good, but it's cheaper, and then you can make small adjustments for various things if you want to, even a new skin perhaps. Personally, I have my normal shape, and I have 2 modded versions, I call 'Keira Mad' (Which is my emo shape, used with my 'Keira Sad' or 'Keira Mad' brows.) and I have Keira Original, which is shorter than my current iteration, and has less of an ass. In truth, making a shape isn't hard at all, just making one you really like will take some time. Play with the sliders, and make something you like the look of. Shapes that are for sale are no better than ones you can make yourself. They use the same tools you have at your hands (The appearance window)

Caleb They will fit, but the same skin on 2 different shapes will look entirely different. As will 2 different skins on the same shape.

Skins look very different with different shapes, so take that into account when you're buying. You should ALWAYS buy the demo and check it on your shape before you buy the actual skin. Demos are either free or 1 linden, so it's not like it costs you anything. Skins that look really good in the picture might look awful on your shape.
A lot of skins come with a shape, or the skin designer has a shape you can get separately that works with the skin. I really prefer my own shape, so I'm very careful before I buy a skin.
Just test them out before you buy. Pick one that makes you happy and go with it. It's not how much you spend, it's how it looks on you and whether you think it expresses your personality in the right way.

Some places sell shapes to go with the skins they are selling. If they don't, maybe the creators would be willing to give you the slider numbers for a general shape that goes well with their skin(?) Send them a notecard with a request, you never know.
Most people just tweak their own shape while wearing a skin they like. Once you've tweaked your shape to 'fit' the skin, make a copy, then continue tweaking here and there until satisfied.
