can't report texture stealing

I was asked to report a conversion I overheard about texture stealing, but the abuse report won't let me. It requires a resident name in the 'abuser' field but when i put in the guys name it says it can't find it in my inventory list - OF COURSE IT CAN'T THIS JERK IS NO FRIEND OF MINE. What the heck does it mean?

You can file the abuse report using the people picker and they don't have to be in your friend's list, but LL isn't going to do anything unless the textures are yours. And then you have to file a DMCA report, not an abuse report.

Your best bet, if you're not the texture creator, is to contact the creator and offer them the evidence you've witnessed. They'll then be able to send a DMCA report to LL.

Could also be that the jerk's already been banned or suspended... People don't show in Search or in that People Picker after they have been banned or suspended.

I know of several artists that are having to file support tickets to get in-world content removed, because the avatar that owns the stolen content that is the subject of their DMCA had already been banned, but LL hadn't removed the offending stuff.

It could be that the people picker is borked. It does happen occasionally. I've seen it where a person who I'm chatting with in IM didn't show in the people picker, and I couldn't set some land for sale to him at the time. Also, overnight (last night) I received an IM from someone who needs some customer support from me with an item that she bought yesterday. I logged in today, but she doesn't show up in the People search. I'd find it hard to believe that she was banned between sending the IM and me logging in. It just occured to me to try the All search :/

Maybe she was banned for Iming you?

OK PEOPLE LISTEN UP In the first place it's a HE not a SHE. Secondly I know he's out there I can find him using search. That's NOT an option I get on the "fill in the blanks" of the abuse form however. The button says RESIDENTS. When I click it a sub screen shows up with a field at the top to fill in and my INVENTORY file under it. THe whole thing makes no sense to me?

The people picker has two areas: There's a search box where you can type the name of any resident, and there's also a window where you can pick from a list of friend cards in your inventory. Just type the name of the person in the top and click Find (or search?) and you'll be fine.

Also, if you're using Search > All, that is usually up to three days out-of-date, so even if the account has been deleted it will still show up there for a while. The only "reliable" search is Search > People. If you're looking in Search > People and his name shows up, you will be able to find the person in the people picker. If he doesn't show up in Search > People, he has already been banned, and you can't file a report against him.

Also, posting chat logs is a TOS violation on a LL controlled website, and is one of the quickest ways to get a warning/forum ban.

Saucy, that's the wrong attitude to take...unproductive.

Look, so far you have:
1. Overheard a conversation between two other residents and posted it in a public forum (a clear TOS violation).
2. Accused the parties of planning a texture theft, but not provided any evidence (except for spanish speakers).
3. Named names in a public forum (again, against forum guidelines).
4. Ignored the excellent advice you were given to notify the texture owner of the alleged plot.
5. Not, so far as we know, contacted LL and filed an Abuse Report.
6. Complained that people who were trying to steer you in the right direction were against you.

Stealing textures is bad, no doubt about that. BUT:
1. You aren't the one harmed. The texture owner is. That is the right person to be informed, and to take action.
2. Naming names is bad. We have no way of knowing if the situation is just as you say...or if you have some hidden agenda to try to get some other residents in trouble.

There aren't many rules in SL...but unless you learn how to follow the few rules there are, your own SL experience will be very frustrating. And possibly cut short.

talking about a crime is no crime until the crime is commited..
overhearing talk about a crime and posting it however is gonna get you in trouble more than them talking about something..i would pull out the log before someone happens along and gets you AR'd..
