Chosen, the inactive IM tabs are a darker color with decent contrast against the text on them. However, look at the tab after a message has been received. The background changes to a light shade of gray or silver with white text. Hardly a good combination.
I think the main issue is that without the flashing tabs, there needs to be a more eye catching scheme to indicate that a message has been received on one of the tabs.
And I have a very nice, high quality monitor intended for doing graphic art and it is calibrated quite well, thank you.

yes its not the active tab that hard to read, but the inactive ones.
A lot of people are of course in the habit of being "lost in IMs" (chatting in 5-8 simultaneous conversations) and using the blink to know when to change active tabs.

I'm wondering, though, if that's what the OP was talking about, why that's not what's in the picture. Perhaps we're talking about two different things? Colette's post would seem to indicate there are at least two separate issues going on, and your post would suggest maybe three. One is that some people (obviously not you) are having trouble reading the inactive tabs, which is what I was responding to. Second is the lack of flashing, which I'll agree has to be a really bad move, no matter what the color scheme. Third is the color you say tabs become when messages are received. I was only responding to point number one, since that's all the original post seemed to be talking about. I haven't actually used this particular RC yet, so I haven't seen the actual behavior of points two and three, just the picture here of point one.

I havent noticed it , must be subtle. The flash really made whether you could read the inactive tabs less critical in use since you just honed in on the flash anyhow. Least thats how I used it.

The color doesn't affect me either way. I DO miss the flashing IM and have in fact missed or had delayed reactions to IMs because I didn't see a flashing tab.
