I had L$600 and I just wanted a tiny home/building plot to play on. I expected to Rent on an estate, but I actually found a peice of land that was actually full on FOR SALE for $L550. No covenant, and then this next one was something that must have changed since my last time in SL (many months ago) but the buy land screen said I didnt need a premium account and that I could own the land without upgrading(so im like 'wtf...COOL') Then the tier portion says That its 'discounted land' and that It would count as owning 0 sqm and wouldnt make me pay tier. Now I see all this and im thinkin... and I Own it?!? No landlord or rent OR TIER!!???? WOWZA!!?? I was thrilled. Now heres my question:

am I missing something? A flaw? A problem? Why is the land discounted? Is it bad land? It seems like a nice sim and it even has water areas to play in. have I just stumbled onto something crazy or has something key component of SL land ownership changed in my absence?

What's the size of the plot you bought? L$550 is not cheap for a 16 sqm parcel. ;)

Also, this could be actually renting on an island ... what's the name of the region (sim)?

This is an indication that you are actually renting land on an island. As long as you pay the monthly rent to your landlord (how to do this is usually spelled out in the estate covenant) you should be OK, if it is a responsible landlord.

The "buy land" dialogue is actually misleading, inasmuch as it does not clearly discern between buying mainland and "buying" the rental rights to a parcel on a private island.

You still have to pay monthly (rent/tier, however they put it to you, it's the same thing) only you pay it to the landlord instead of LL

No, indeed it isn't. Good that I'm working from home today. However, it's not safe for the "home-W", either.

{EDIT} Don't worry ... I was alone ;)

I only gave it a cursory glance before posting it. Have added a space to the URL now, as some people find that Greasemonkey posts the picture even when the poster uses the tags.

oh yes, it wasn't the content of the picture that bothered me, it was that it might be taken as an insult by the OP. Sorry, I tend to think everyone always knows what I am talking about and generally they don't lol

I'm guessing the OP has a sense of humour, from his/her choice of name. I think the picture was mean't to be of a skanky gymnast.

If you like her name you'll love to watch her dance. She lives up to her name.

[shameless plug warning] She'll be at Pole Cats Cabaret this Saturday evening, 7 to 9 PM SLT [/shameless plug warning]

Unfortunately, it sounds like you missed a whole lot. You are on an estate.

Did you go to World>About Land>Covenant Tab to see the details about your estate? Most of them will have info there about what your weekly/monthly rent/tier costs will be. If it's telling you there that it's discounted land and there's no tier, you might be on an openspace that's being abandoned soon. You should contact the owner of the estate right away to find out what's going on.

I could have sworn that a few weeks ago that the estate buying window informed people that land was being sold by the estate owner rather than Linden Lab. Must have been wishful thinking because it doesn't say it now!

Yea I was aware of that but not only was the window *misleading* it was straight up telling me that what I naturally thought was an estate rental... was not!

There is no set covenant, I'm listed as the OWNER now. I have all the control I'd have over a mainland plot. No estate owner has even contacted me yet and it does in fact say "DISCOUNTED LAND counts as 0 sqm of land" so Im guessing its the openspace thing cuz I've got 1024sqm square plot surrounded by water.

I've rented estate land before and I'm fairly familiar with the process. This whole transaction though was just well... oddly differently worded and gives the full impression of ownership that one would never get from estate rentals without setting stuff up.

Its wierd! but im enjoying myself..

*UPDATE* - I just deeded the land to group and it shows as area 0sqm

Not every estate owner puts in a covenant. I'm too lazy to do it for my own island. I already have my folks adhere to the terms in their rental boxes.

Who is the estate owner?
