While out trying to buy my weight in shoes earlier, I got in a conversation with a fellow shopper. I said something about wanting to learn how to make things and she told me to try Ivy Tower (??) or to take some classes. Does anyone know where to go to take classes? How much they cost? How long does it take? Is this like a college continuing education class that is several weeks long or more like 3 to 5 day crash course. If nothing else, just point me in the right direction and I'll take my questions with me

Start there but first familiarise yourself with the in world edit menu. For creating, resizing and shaping prims you can find most answers at the the Ivory Tower and then ask here in the forums for more information if you need it.

If you join their groups (NCI, GQ Student) you will be notified +/- 15 minutes before the class starts. Or you can just teleport over and check-out times/days classes are given. Classes are free (tipping is always appreciated but not obligatory), and I'm sure there are other places.

Hi, Jacinda! Ivory Tower of Prims is a set of self-teaching tutorials. It's notecard-based with demos there, and exercises to do. Frankly, as an introduction to SL's build tools, I found it better than the classes that have instructors, which usually move pretty fast. At the Ivory Tower you can take time to stare at the build menu's various tabs and really let it sink in. All classes in SL are listed in events; search under the Education category. You may wish to type one of these two strings into the search field: "NCI" or "TUI". These are the two biggest schools for new avatars in SL; they offer free 1-hour classes in just about everything. The classes have volunteer instructors; I usually give them a tip when I attend, but then I've been inworld for a year There's a new place also called GQ Start, again free classes for newbies. If you go to the main sim for these schools (for NCI, search for New Citizens), you'll find schedules in notecard form, etc.. Have fun! Edit: oh sorry, y'all chimed in while I took a phone call. Well, heck, I'll leave the post anyway, lol!

Jacinda,
If you are interested in designing items that can be worn or attached to an Avatar you will need a poser stand as well. This is a prim that allows your Avatar to stand on it and freeze in the same position so you can cam around an attach items in the right places.
If you do not have one, let me know I can send you one in world

I found one place that charges $500 for various tutorials. It's all note cards though. Information that's rather basic that can be found on the Orientation Islands or the F1 Help section.

My two cents on Ivory Tower: I read somewhere that if you just go through it, grab all the notecards and then go to a sandbox to read them and try the execrises it's a lot less laggy. That worked for me and I still have the notecards in my inventory (well at least I hope I do) for reference when I forget something.
You don't get to see the examples this way, but you can always hop back over there and look.

It's a must visit for anyone interested in building, an I stop by there now an then for inspiration. I would also suggest... Robin (Sojourner) Wood's Texture Tutorial and Library in Livingtree Jopsy Pendragon's Particle Lab in Teal The tutorials on Microprims, shadow baking, and other stuff in Idea City And yes, building classes. I did just about every project TUi offered Mari

I have attended some classes with SLLC (Second Life Learning Centre) - I love them! They're usually limited to 15 students and each student has a workstation with the instructor in front. The supplies are included and most of the classes are anywhere from $10L to $50L (I always tip the instructer as well) - there is a blog but I'm not in world at the moment (or on my home pc for the bookmark) and I can't seem to locate it.
Just search SLLC groups - or Second Life Learning Centre <---note the spelling of Centre
It's awesome, I've been learning jewelry recently.

There are also links at the Ivory Tower for a couple of companion places, the Particle Lab and Texture-something-or-other.

From: Nika Talaj The classes have volunteer instructors; I usually give them a tip when I attend, but then I've been inworld for a year Though their time is in reality worth far more than we can afford, NCI pays its instructors 500L$ per class hour taught. That fee was based on the old Linden Lab instructor payments, that NCI made a decision to continue to pay once LL ended them in December 2006. NCI's budget for classes, event prizes, tier, hosting fees, and misc. expenses is supported by donations, fundraisers (like the winter auction last year), ad sales at NCI locations, and running classes for a fee for corporate clients.

NCI has some very detailed FREE notecard-based tutorials can be--as well as links to web-based tutorials--available in the "SL Info" boards at all four NCI campuses, as well as our ten NCI InfoNodes.

Let me also recommend ASL (Academy of Second Learning) and Rockcliffe University for good free classes on various SL-related subjects.

Wholeheartedly agree with all of the other suggestions.
Don't forget the particle place - it's way cool and interactive. The names escapes me atm. *sighs*
And when searching under Events, if you narrow your category to Education, you will see all the schools and there are many. I have taken more classes at more venues than I can possibly count and enjoyed them all. It's also a great way to meet other creative types who are interested in giving back to the metaverse.
Oh, and I always tip. Because I'm fortunate enough to be able to do so, but it's certainly not compulsory - though the instructors greatly appreciated.
It was all a little overwhelming for me at first -- so much information and so much to learn. But I enjoyed it so much, I prevailed, and still do.
And as so many say, above all else, have fun!
