What ARE Ruths, really?

Why are they so immediately obvious? Is it true that we are all actually the same Ruth, both male and female? So in that case what is the essential feature of Ruths that make them so undesirable – a term of insult and embarrassment? Where do they come from? Where do they go when they disappear? Can nothing be done to solve the Ruth problem? Are they in fact a problem at all?

Ruth is the inner being of all of us. We need to embrace her, let her know she is loved. We need to be at one with the Ruth.
Ok no more hippy talk.

I don't see anything wrong with poor Ruth. She just has a habit of sort of half appearing. A bit of her hair poking out. Changing height or something. It just looks pretty wierd.

Ruth is a default setting for an avatar shape. I think it's from Poser or something. If you never receive shape information about an avatar (probably due to packet loss or asset trouble), your viewer just uses the Ruth shape.

If it's not an asset issue, the avatar may be able to his or her correct shape while others can't. To fix this, that person can open and close the Edit Appearance window to send along the shape to everyone else.

Why is she ruth anyway?

Why could she not be given a gender neutral name? Or maybe something even more interesting?

I hate her!

I think Ruth is scary because wherever she appears, disaster is sure to follow.

And she walks funny, too.

(She shows up when the client knows there's an avatar there, but can't get enough information to properly shape and texture it. When things are just slow, Ruth gradually transforms into the "real" avatar; when things are really b0rked, Ruth sticks around. One can get a fair approximation of Ruth from Client : Character : Character Tests : Test Female, which is handy for convening a coven of Ruths--which have the witch-like power of making everybody else relog. ;) )

Ruth is very old. I remember in 2003 in beta someone talking about Ruth.
She likes to gender bend and gets around to everyone eventually.
I think she was gender bending Linden originally.

You people born with your nice avies don't know how lucky you are. As I've complained many times, when I was "born" I literally screamed - I looked like Bernard Manning!

No. Bernard Manning's uglier and shorter sister. Ruth Manning.

Perhaps it's because we hold these Ruths to be self-evident

Qie, I think you'll find that the character test female is a very different creature from our beloved Ruth. The former is more like a new resident shape and skin. The latter is wthin us all.

Claire, keep up the hippy talk! :p

I love my inner Ruth.... really......... :D

Ruth is that quiet child in the classrooms corner.
No one knows her...she never said a word...she never did anything wrong except beeing born.
You don't know how her eyes looks like because she never looks straight at you.
You don't know how she sounds like because she's too scared to say something.
Still people hate her, teases her and beat her like she's the reason for the all the evilness in the whole world.
But sometimes she smile when no one see...and sometimes she even laugh when no one can hear...

And she is mine

I suspect mostly due to the hair. It is distinct in its indistinctness. Also, they are often gray, given they tend to be a purely unrezzed state. Ruthing can also be fairly obvious on some avatars, like broken fur and other avatars, Ruth's hair sticking through prim hair, and (my fave) bent-legged versions of child and small avatars.

Yes. We all come form the same mesh, and Ruth is the progenitor of that mesh.

Simply put, while we are all Ruth at the core, we have also created our own unique avatar to speak through. When glitches and lag take our uniqueness away from us, it is upsetting.

Where do they come from?

I believe initially from poser, but I'm not sure. I know that it was the initial mesh after the ol' Primitar.

Albuquerque

They are not a problem, but they are a sign of a problem. I doubt much can be done about them and, like lag, you just learn to roll with it. Like others said, embrace your inner Ruth. Keeping an anti-Ruth rocket (something I pass along so very often) in your inventory helps, too.

R.U.T.H. is a Resulting Unwanted Teleportation Hazard.

The other kind of Ruth can be found here...

Library/Clothing/More Outfits/Ruth

I'm not sure who originally designed Ruth as most of the properties indicate "Newbie Template", but it could have been the late Pat Linden (not to be confused with Patsy Linden).

Yeah...I actually never saw a "Ruth" in any version of Poser...but she was the original SL avatar, after the Grid was "converted into" SecondLife, from it's original form as a Beta 3D-Shooting game called Lindenworld, with the "Primitar" being the ORIGINAL avatar. You can still get the Primitar in-world for free...just search Primitar avatar or Primitar costume. I have one.

Back then the Grid had rain, replicating plants, land animals, birds, "dynamic water", etc etc...and you could shoot almost anything to "blow it up.

...or course w/ the new concept of SL, all those effects (and more, that are still locked away in the running code), had to be disabled because of the lag.

...if you start in Opensource, making your own Grid...you start out with a Ruth...no clothing, but she's textured.

This is true, and I even assert that Ruth is actually a divine being sent by the Lindens when we are having trouble. She's there to help us out. Without her standing in for our avatars during glitches, we would quite literally cease to exist. Scary thought, huh?

I suggest anyone wanting to learn more visit the Our Lady of Perpetual Frustration Shrine next to my garden in Peronaut. There you can pick up a novena, meditate and pray to Her, and if you're lucky, experience a miraculous vision. There's also the new resident kits should anyone need them.

Ruth is the guy that wanted me to do dirty nasty things to him last night. I pointed at his not so manly chest, giggled a bit and tp'd away.

I don't hate my Ruth. Really, I don't. Its just that she shows up at the wrong times. Like that one night I was dancing on a pole on Orgy . . . . Oh! TMI, huh?
