Hi Sinabunz....welcome~!!!
All the advice you're getting here is great....it's tough being a newbie and getting used to all the glitches of SL.....but rest assured... we ALL have dealt with all these issues. For the most part..... if your AV suddenly looks funky.......two things you can try first to fix her are A. just quicky click in and out of 'edit appearance'. If she is ruthed, that may correct it for you. B. try rebake which you will need your client menu for....if you don't see the client menu up top.....hit cntrl D and it should appear..... then under client....go to character...and down to 'rebake textures'.
Often times the textures on your avitar (this meaning skin & clothing worn) can go awry and rebaking will correct it. I've been thru spells where every time I logged in, my avitar had some kind of weird looking pattern where she should have had skin. LOL Another issue can be a slow connection.....causing lag in what you are seeing versus what everyone else sees. This is frustrating, but not necessarily a problem so much as just one of the issues of having so much information on so many servers running at once. If we don't connect quickly....and our graphics cards can't cope......it can cause textures to be very slow in appearing for us.
Over all...... SL is a fantastic world and a blast to explore and make friends. The longer you are here, the more you will learn and trust me....you'll be helping others and probably laughing to yourself about your own 'newbie' days.
I agree with you about shapes too....I make shapes and own a shapes shop (male & female) but I try to go for more human appearances, not the Jessica Rabbit and Hercules looks that are so popular. Just hang in there gf....and come to us any time for help....the forums here are wonderful~!!! ((((hugs))))

From: Mickey James Is it something wrong the avatar, or slow system download? I assumed you get Ruthed when the system isn't able to get your shape from the asset server. A while back when SL was having issues, I noticed I'd be Ruthed for a few seconds after logging in, and then the right shape would pop into place. Actually, we're all Ruth when we log in or teleport. Usually the system downloads fast enough you don't notice, but in high lag, you get to see what you really are deep inside and under your $1000 skin and shape. Deep inside, we're all Ruth.

From: Viktoria Dovgal For a few weeks there was an avatar hanging out in the Hanson infohub area. All gray, no skin, white eyes, Ruth shape. Stood there for days on end for no apparent reason, except possibly to look scary, or maybe steal Trout's purple chair. She seems to be gone now, probably died from exposure. I wondered where my chair went. I saw her there, too - sort of hiding behind the box that teleports you to the dressing rooms. I even commented on her to a friend. The second I said something, she disappeared and I haven't seen her since. Weird. I've been seeing a ton of people pop into Hanson with no eyes. Even avatars that look like they have some work done to them - i.e. not freebie clothes or skin. Sinabunz - sometimes when you get Ruthed, the only thing you can do is wait. The last time it happened to me, I got the Ruth shape you see above and kept my skin. So I had a goatee to go with the awful shape. I also couldn't attach anything like hair, AO, etc and most of my inventory was gone. A day later, it all came back, but it was a little disconcerting for a while. Congrats on getting back to normal!

From: Yumi Murakami Yes, many avatars in SL have very unrealistic proportions. People are almost always too thin, are impossibly tall, and don't even mention, um, gravity It seems like everything in SL is made for AVs that are between 6' and 7'6" tall. When I tried to go and make my shape more "me" by adjusting proportions so that I was 5'2"ish I ended up looking like a child AV, everything (people, furniture, buildings) were huge compared to me.

Anything that prevents SL from downloading your shape, will make you appear as Ruth - whether it's just lag or an actual failure with the data or the server.

Yes, if you're not roughly 6'2"ish many things will seem gigantic to you in SL. I myself am 5'4"ish in SL, depending on the scan I've shown as 5'2" to 5'6", but was aiming for my rl shape and size and got really close so I'm happy I just have to shop wisely or look for mod items so I can adjust them accordingly. Or make them myself.

I don't usually have a problem with clothes, but even so, I've about decided to give up and add five or six inches, just to keep from feeling quite so much of a midget.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet. With my luck, I have and I forgot. If you can find a free shape that is close to what you want and is modifiable, you have a big advantage over starting from scratch. All you have to do is make the fine adjustments, then. For some of us, it never quite ends. Playing with your shape can be addictive. I still haven't got my nose exactly right, and I'm a little thinner than I want to be. Maybe I'm a tad too tall...hmmmm.....

I am short in rl and have made my avi that way too and have never had a problem with it. Guess I just got lucky buying clothes and shoes. Those silks dont take up a lot of space when you put them on your avi. Think my heels add about 6 inches to my height, it is a wonder I dont break my sl neck.

From: Sinabunz Loire I thought I would explore this game. It sounded interesting...a lot different than my previous dabbles.. EQ2, WOW, Vanguard. Being a girl, well "woman" in my thirties, I still like playing dress up I guess. I made the huge mistake of buying Linden dollars so I could buy a "skin". At first I thought this was well worth it because my character was looking very nice...(important to me for some reason). Plus, I have this "thing" of making my character look like me. More immersive I guess. Well, for some reason, my character has taken on a very "clay like", ugly appearance. I am not a happy camper. Is this common place in this game? I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't cost me "real" money. The people on the forums are wonderful, but I feel like a lost puppy trying to figure how everything works...and Im certainly not a dumb person. It seems that a lot of people that offer help, talk in SL slang that I am completely unfamiliar with. sounds like you bought a dud. Ive found that money does not necessarily equal quality in SL or real life for that matter. If I were you Id complain to the person who sold it or made it and tell them youd like a refund. I have shops in second life and I have absolutely no qualms about refunding in full to anyone who is unhappy with any of my products. Fortunately this has never happened though.

Shep, you didn't read the whole thread I guess. It was a Celestial Studios skin. They have quality products. Also, the problem was SL, not the skin. Another variety of missing textures.

Me too-I only have a problem if a prim skirt is too long or some such, but generally my butt is the...erm....bigger problem.
