check out this tree i made....

the branches on that tree allways face the camera, and the edges are sharp (alpha opaque).

if ur wondering how i did it, it is simple and involves some cleaver use of particles, but saves a tun on prims and the "cardboard cutout" problem u get with ALL trees will be gone

hope this helps someone out there, if u want a copy of the tree in the image (free 4 all) just IM me in-world

also when you move the tree, the particles DO NOT leave a trial behind them...

edit: and here are the trees in a woodland

Hey Chaos, very nice! Is there any way to make the central trunk a little shorter, so it doesn't stick up above the rest of the branches?

I know LL has been mumbling about Speedtree support for years. Did you create it outside of SL and import it?

Anyway, I will be IMing you. Many thanks!

lol no, it is simply a prim trunk, and cleaver use of particle scripts. the tree does not move, or change and is completely static, 2bh i could have done a much better job, and included 2 or 3 particle images rather than just 1. and made the rest of the tree sculptie, but this was just 4 show & tell

You can set your particles down to 256 at the lowest. It knocks out a lot of the particles seen. But I'm not sure how those trees will look at that setting.

The forest looks great. If it's low lag that would be great. Forests that use sculpted trees are just so laggy.

Just for the record, since we are still in Resident Answers - was there a question involved anywhere? Or are we in Promotion Land again...?

Agreed. This would have been better suited for the gallery than RA.

That said, nice proof of concept, Chaos. I am curious, though, why you put the word "SpeedTree" in your title. That seems a little misleading, since you aren't actually using SpeedTree itself in any way here. Is there some sort of tie-in that I missed?

Chaos, those are terrific. I agree the top should be shorter. other than that, the forest is KILLER!

i love particle effects, so i'm a future client.

those who have bashed Chaos in this thread for showing a new way to make trees are asses. you all talk GD constantly, which is WAAAAAAAAAY worse than coming in here with a pic and willing to give a free tree AND tell hwo to make it. why don't you haters just shut your holes.

3Ring, relax. No one in this thread has bashed Chaos in any way. In fact, just about everyone has praised him and thanked him for sharing.

The only slight addition to that is that one person mentioned, quite politely, that perhaps this particular forum wasn't the best choice of location for this particular thread. Another person (me) then suggested what forum might be more suitable. And I also had a question about the title of the thread. That's it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. It's all positive, none of it negative.

You'd do well to quit the name calling, and to cease imagining aggression where there is none. Nobody here is a "hater", except possibly you for going off on this little tirade of yours, and certainly no one should be told to "shut their hole". The only one who has brought any negativity at all into this thread so far is you.

perhaps all you say is correct. perhaps it's not. but history is not forgotten with me.

either way, betcha now it won't become a Chaos bashing thread, which is the usual course when he posts anything he's created.

he posted it in a fine place. most of us would have never seen his post had he done it somewhere else. no where in his post did he advertise to sell anything.

and again, pointing out his post might possibly be in the wrong forum is ridiculous considering all the GD that goes on in here.. which should definitely be posted elsewhere.

I'm not sure how "you can make this by clever use of particles" qualifies as a building tutorial really.

The thread is self-promotional and off-topic, like all of Chaos' threads.

this is resident answers, not JUST resident questions, so i am supplying an answer, it does not say anywhere that it has 2 be just a question

so your saying that althou 90% of the people that say they are glad this post is here are wrong, the the small 10% that say its off-topic and in the wrong place are right.

who defines whats wrong or right, in my view it is the larger majority of people.

i am giving away something for free here and u still heckle me about it. you must lead a very depresseing online life if u see pleasure in putting down people who are just trying to be creative, give things away for free that could otherwise make me allot of money and just trying 2 be a good person.

now pleasem if u have nothing nice (or constructive critism) to add then please go do it somewhere else, cheers

do YOU know how to create the effect he did with particles? i don't. it's a new technique.. or at least, new to me. just because Chaos posted it, it's self promotion? i don't think so. if Desmond had posted it, you'd be falling all over yourself and drooling. to be clear.... not meant to take anything from Desmond. he's an amazing creator too. obviously.

Normally, I would stay out of this type of stuff, but maybe my head cold is making me extra cranky, so I am just going to point this out:

From the Stickies at the top of Resident Answers, the one titled "About This Forum <--- please read me first!" - the very first line:

Resident Answers is a simple, friendly place to ask your fellow Residents of Second Life for help.

~~~~~~~~~~
We may all now return to our normal thread questions, answers, praising, bashing, generalizations, craziness, and all of the other on topic and off topic things that we get up to here.
Which is exactly why I posted my question, given Chaos' tendency in posting and the fact that in his last thread the new forum mod herself reminded him to post in the proper forum...
Oh, and by the way, I may be missing something, but nowhere do I see an offer to share details about his technique - just to give out copies of the tree.
You gloated about posting things you know don't belong in RA just the other day, or "posting in classic Chaos Style" as you called it, so you actually know perfectly well.
From: someone
Your view is entirely irrelevant and so is mine for that matter. The purpose and guidelines of RA are clearly defined and if that's something you don't agree with then push for change while still adhering to things the way they are now, or find a forum that more closely resembles your views, or get a blog.
From: someone
i am giving away something for free here and u still heckle me about it.
I didn't heckle you, I pointed out that "I made this with particles" doesn't even remotely resemble a tutorial in my opinion which only leaves a "Look at what I did" motive on top of the fact that you knew this should have gone in the Gallery forum.
From: 3Ring Binder
do YOU know how to create the effect he did with particles? i don't.
You just made my point: since you don't know how to create the effect after reading the post, it doesn't "show a new way to make trees". It merely shows two pictures of trees.
I'm going to bow out of the discussion for now about where this post does and doesn't belong, since I've already said what I needed to say on that. I would like to address this point, though:
From: Novis Dyrssen
Oh, and by the way, I may be missing something, but nowhere do I see an offer to share details about his technique - just to give out copies of the tree.
I would think the technique would be fairly obvious if you take Chaos up on his offer and grab yourself a copy of the tree. All you really need to know is how to create the static particles, which you'll learn as soon as you look at the script. The texture that you put on the particles can then be anything from tree branches to grass to a portrait of your mom.
Thanks for posting here, I sadly dont have the time to
trawl through all the topic catergories so I would have
missed it otherwise.
i remember his tendencies. i haven't forgotten that history either.
i assumed he was sharing, because he has before. now, he has said he would, so i guess that makes this thread valid.
not to be an ass or alientate myself from you or others, but some of you are quick to jump his shit anytime he posts, while others are allowed to skate on by. just saying.
i'm not intolerant to anyone's opinions. i just don't get why everyone thinks they are the forum police, and why Chaos' posts are targetted and picked apart for any signs of violation at every opportunity.
